>>Thread question
Ever snatched defeat from the jaws of victory? What's the most epic fuck-up you've succumbed to in a game of EDH?
Asking again, need advice for this Saskia infect + combat deck. Are there any cards that are significantly off-theme?
http://tappedout.net/mtg-decks/saskia-the-brass-knuckles/
http://tappedout.net/mtg-decks/a-maelstrom-enters-the-battlefield/
What are my win-cons supposed to look like for Maelstrom Wanderer? Just let it hit the field then get value? Or is there something I'm missing?
Not me, but I literally yesterday saw a game with 2 players playing 1v1 player a has mind's dilation on the field and nothing else.
Player B has an ugin ultimate ready to go and goes to his main phase and plays the card he drew: Nicol Bolas Planeswalker. Player A triggers mind's dilation and flips chaos warp and warps ugin and counters the Bolas with a shit counterspell.
I've never seen worse play in my life.
Looking for a good, simple d20 system
My group started with pathfinder, and while we love our characters, the systems felt too cumbersome and restricting and it really burnt out our (first time) GM
We did Lasers and Feelings recently and had a lot of fun with it, but I think its a little too free form to support a long running campaign.
Is there anything closer to Lasers and Feelings on the complexity spectrum, but with a little more structure and long term viability we could transplant our characters to?
>>52245465
I really like Shadows of the Demon Lord. It's a pretty simple system. You roll a d20 and add your modifier from one of the four stats (modifier= stat-10) and if you beat 10, you succeed. You can get bane (bad) or boon (good) dice added to the roll for difficulty or other modifiers. The way they work is you roll a number of d6s equal to high many bane/boons your dm says you get for the roll, take the highest result from those dice and add/subtract it to the result (based on whether you rolled boons or banes). They also cancel eachother out.
And that's pretty much it. The leveling system is kind of cool too. There are 10 levels and you start at level 0. After your first adventure you pick a novice career (warrior, magician, priest, rogue) and get stuff from that. Then as you level up you pick another career in a new tier based on your first one (so a magician can specialize into a warlock, wizard, witch, or sorcerer). Then later there is one more (so your magician-warlock might become a Demon binder or some shit)
The setting is a generic grimdark fantasy setting, but it's kind of in the background and not too important. It wouldn't be hard to swap it for just about anything else.
I'm a little drunk, so sorry if that description sucked.
>>52245465
Truth told, no. The things that are going to make a game hold together long-term all cost complexity. You're going to have to take the hit on one side or the other.
If you want to roll your own look at Fudge/Fate. If you want to bounce from simple system to simple system changing them as they get stale look into indy games like Dogs in the Vineyard and Microscope. If you want a playable but limited d20 get the free 5e Basic Rules/SRD stuff and play it. If you find you need more options than that get the PHB.

I sometimes get this feel. Such as when I have to remind my fellow party members which side of the civil war we're on and why it's a bad idea to just randomly murder people so we can steal their fucking chickens even though we're level 13 characters in DnD.

Sam was the hero of the story. Tolkien literally references him as the chief hero.

This pack of wolves wants to fight your group of armed adventures to the death, rather than hunt a deer or something else that don't fight back
Wild Empathy is a thing, depending on the system.
If it's not, God help the wolves
>>52244011
The deer are dead because of the cursed land they dwell in, and the wolves are starving and desperate.
>>52244011
Every new group I get gets subjected to this little stealth test.
>Early on, soon after leaving the first "safe" area, they get attacked by a large group of weak bandits/monsters/pirates/whatever is appropriate for setting.
>The salient points is that they're after the PCs money, have no personal involvement, there are a lot of them, they are individually extremely weak, and even as a group they pose little actual threat to the party.
>Assuming they aren't complete incompetents or the random dice gods aren't extremely angry, players will get the upper hand very quickly.
>Baddies will scatter and flee when their fortunes (quickly) turn against them.
People who start complaining about how I'm robbing them of loot or XP get a stern talking to, or an outright boot if they seem to not get it. If it's multiple people all complaining, I leave the group.
So here's a scenario, /tg/ has put all its meme magic together and caused a major anime production company to take notice of how much shit /tg/ gets done.
You have been given infinite money and labor with whatever studio you choose to make a 13 episode season of an anime centered around traditional gaming and neck beard culture in general, what do you make?
I'll give an example and also get basically what's the weebshit standard for the industry out of the way
>A slice of life anime where a guy moves to a new town and discovers the local gamestore is totally populated by moe girls, each one representing some stereotype of neckbeards, kinda like seitokai yakuindomo, rage all you want but the waifu b8 will almost assure me a second season.
>>52243730
A coming-of-age anime about bitter manchildren who only love the fun of their variety and hate all the other varieties of fun. They belittle each other, and look for the branches in the others' figurative eyes, not realizing they've got a log stuck in their own eyes.
In the course of the anime, they slowly come to realize that their hobby is not a goal unto itself, but a means for self-actualization and reaching out into the others' inner worlds, that there's more to games than just models and rulebooks and dice - that these games would lose their meaning if there was no interaction with other people.
Haha, just kidding, in the last episode, they will return to the status quo, never outgrowing their bitter selves and remaining blind to (or maybe even willingly shutting out) the others' inner worlds.
Basically, imagine Himouto! Umaru-chan, except starring a bunch of unloveable neckbeards, and add a dash of Zero Charisma and self-deprecating humor.
>>52243829
10/10 would watch to feel better about myself
>>52243730
A sequel/spinoff to Gundam Build Fighters. It would eradicate Try from canon, and the crossover would be 40k. And if I had infinite money, I'd do 40something-50 eps, vidya, 3 OVAs, a movie, and some crazy minis and/or gunpla
I have a coworker who's really into 40K stuff and I'm trying to make them be my friend. What's the best way to get into 40K lore without getting the actual models?
>>52243613
Find a concrete slab somewhere and beat it against your head for a few hours. Then read Lexicanum.
The disorientation from your self-harm will shield you somewhat against the fact that none of this makes any fucking sense.
>>52243628
I don't intend to get into the lore for the tremendous amount of sense it makes. I just want to make dumb jokes with a guy I work with.
I'll add Lexicanum to the list of things to look out for.
>>52243613
The vidya.
Why have you stolen from the giant's garden, even though he would've gladly shared his bounty with the humans had they only asked politely?
>>52242927
I was going to ask at first, but climbing that beanstalk got me into this really bad mood.
>>52242927
For the challenge.
We tried asking the last five giants politely and they slaughtered and ate us. If he's still willing to share we'll apologize and do what we can to repair our relationship, but you can bet we'll be cautious about it.
>Dual Bosses.
>One Knight and a witch
>Witch is more fragile.
How do I prevent players from killing the witch first?
>>52242615
Give the Knight a special property that once per round or something he can intercept an attack made for the witch and/or makes a retributive attack against the person who harmed the witch.
Think the Swine King from Darkest Dungeon: Attacking his aid is a BAD idea, because instead of attacking two of your allies, he does a full-party heavy attack. Killing his aid means he does this EVERY TURN.
>>52242615
Witch stays out of reach, uses cover and hit and run tactics, knight stays close and personal.
>>52242615
Knight hits harder every time the witch takes damage or knight hits harder every time an attack isn't directed at him.
I've never played it before and have always wanted to. I don't really have the money to buy the game itself and I don't know where I can play it online. I also have no idea how to start. Advice?
>>52242450
https://roll20.net/ is a good place to play online apparently. It takes some searching to find a decent group, though.
>>52242450
See if theres a local Tabletop club, GMs will usually provide all you need.
But be warned, you'll almost certainly be playing with randoms. They can range from the rare good players to the absolute worst.
>>52242450

As other anon said, roll20 is certainly a place to find a party, but it's not a very good one. Before you resort to that, check tabletop stores in your town or ask your friends to play with you, if you have any.

What are the tell-tale signs of a Mary-sue?
>>52242027
Added into a pre-existing setting by a writer not authorized by the copyright holder, and ability to perform the known strengths of pre-existing characters better than said characters.
>>52242027
Dead family. Bonus points if they killed them
It's easier to do in fanfics but as a general rule the most obvious mary sue traits are:
>They are exceptional, if not perfect, at anything they do and no good reason is given as to why e.g. the character is a fantastic fighter, commander, pilot, dancer, farmer and singer and the only explanation given for how they are good at all these different skills is that they are a natural.
>Their appearance, by the standards of the setting, stands out massively e.g. in a low fantasy setting where everything looks humanoid and the only fantastical appearance trait normally found are weird eye colors, the character has wings, two differently colored glowing eyes and ,despite being young and beautiful, is the only with silver hair.
>The character never experiences any real challenge, no enemy is ever able to inflict some form of serious damage and the character never suffers even minor losses.
>Every other character seemingly becomes unimportant and useless when this character is present, only the sue is allowed to beat the villains, the side characters never do even when all logic and causality suggests they should
>A common trait is a "dark and traumatic" past that never seems to actually affect the sue in any meaningful way. The obvious example seen is almost every fanfic and teenagers first attempt at writing is the girl whose back story is full of rape, torture and other traumatizing experiences and yet the only way this affects them is their constant moping about it, no signs of actual mental trauma to be seen or heard
Honestly there's a shit ton of other traits that are associated with sues. It all boils down to how powerful and important the character seems compared to everything else, including the actual plot. Just look up My Immortal, it's the most obvious and distilled mary sue story known to man.
I require wizards, in any shape and form!
I'd prefer wizards with great big mana pools, to be honest family

They're not actual lego kits, just 3D renditions of what a lego kid of these models could look like
