How do you guys do it? I'm supposed to be running a dnd campaign for my group of friends soon and for some reason I just can't figure out how I'm supposed to organize everything so I can run it smoothly. If you are first time DM i highly agree with the other anon. Premade adventures are your friends especially as a new dm. It helps you heaps in terms of running your firat campaign amd what to expect. Im a firat time DM and im running hoarde of the dragon queen atm and rise of tiamat directly after it, not the most dm friendly campaign but im having fun and my players are having fun. Ive heard out of the abyss is meant to be awesome, so maybe pick up that and go from there. But 5e has a bunch of premade adventures and all of them look pretty good in their own way

As someone who's running a game as a first timer myself, I gotta say a few things I was told when asking the same, plus shit I already learned with my players
Don't share any numerical values with your players
Make them all roll chars beforehand, and in private with you, so they'll have to introduce their chars, as well as think what they want to play, to avoid situations like
>oh player 1 already plays a ranger? Well I wanted to play one

>mumbles something and rolls a different class anyway
Bosses do not have set hp, they die when you feel they should
Improvise and make shit up as soon as it falls off the flimsy rails you try to keep your players on, and well, it will fall off the rails, especially with first timers

Never tried find people to play with on it but in my experience using it to play games it actually pretty good and the characters sheets (atleast the pathfinder ones) are getting steadily more polished.

Actually it's quite easy.
You just put the shards in interesting and varied locations with interesting and varied challenges guarded by interesting and varied enemies supported by interesting and varied side quests.
You're players will completely forget they were even collecting something by the end of it.

Yeah, mine. Use one universal 'thief skill' number, which goes up every even level. Every even level, including first level, increase the bonus you get to sneak rolls and sneak attack rolls by +1.
Fluff your thieves as Rogues and give them bonuses to ranged and sneak attacks. Make them have enough health and equipment options that they actually want to fight sometimes, or fight indirectly at range if they don't want to wear armor. That's how you fix them.

Specialist skills more general than B/X thief skills but true to spirit of original game. All classes get them but only specialist advances. Player chooses which skills improve with each advance in level. d6 based like Gygax intended.

Song of Swords is a a tabletop RPG centered around realistic medieval fightan' with a ludicrous variety of weapons and fighting styles, centered around a dice pool system. It's currently in beta, and can be used for both fantasy and historical games. Kickstarter is happening NOW we are kicking ass baby!
Call of the Void: Ballad of the Laser Whales is a pulpy sci-fi tabletop RPG about fighting space-nazis and hunting giant whales with harpoons made out of the moon. Its combat system is more modern, based in the early 20th century, but can probably handle combat up to the present day.
MEGA folder containing current version of the game and all supplementary materials.
Note that the latest version of the game is v1.9.9 but with additional supplements. It's NOT what's currently on Opaque's website, because Jimmy is Jimmy.
