Conan the Barbarian...
And come to think of it, Conan was nearly the archi-typical BBEG with is all I KILL THE KING FOR FUCKING WITH ME AND USURP THE THRONE.
One standing inside the city might see a blood thirsty barbarian when in truth Conan would be one of the most Just and Kind rulers that the city will ever see,
and that got me thinking
>TLDR
We make a charcter who looks like a BBEG from outside his city but he is really a THIS GUY.
>Name him, describe him.
>How did he get the throne?
>Why do his people love him?
>Why do people outside the city hate him?

Ugh.
>>52685871
You either have shit tastes, or you're ignorant and assume Conan is like the cheesy Schwarzenegger movies.
>>52685718
Shame on you for conflating real Conan with the movies from the 80s as though they're even vaguely the same character.
>>52686448The first film is a classic, though
DMs, how do you treat aimed strikes?
I have a player who probably played too much Fallout, every time he swings his sword he says "I aim at his neck", when it's a big monster it's "I try to stab his eyes".
>>52685252
I remind them that a called shot is made with a -8 penalty.
Almost positive that whatever hypothetical game you're talking about has explicit rules for assigning penalties to these attacks.
>>52685286
>a called shot is made with a -8 penalty
Jesus christ, what? Where does it say that?
>>52685286
It's DnD.
I have been acting like he tries to aim but only hits the body, only hitting the neck if it's a critical (since it will get added damage).
With this -8 penalty, how much damage is added if he hits?

Anyone know of any artwork depicting chaos worshiping xenos/xenos working with chaos? Either one of the chaos aliens described in books and the lore (Laer, Scaephylyds ect.) or one of the playable races too, interpretive fan-art is welcome, but official stuff would be preferable
>>52683423
Except for your pic there is barely any info on Chaos xenos.
There are ofcrs Chaos Ogryns, but I am guessing you are not talking about them.
Nahh not really, though coincidentally I did just buy a box of chaos spawn and ogryns to convert into chaos ogryns! I wouldn't mind seeing what a chaos ratling looks like, though?

In my PF game, the party has decided to try to sneak into a Spymaster's House. This is an extremely paranoid man, and as such, every inch of his house, the large forested property, and the tunnels below his house are chock full of traps.
I need traps. No matter how dumb or nonsensical. If I can make them work mechanically, I will put them in this guy's house.
The biggest trap is that he doesn't actually live there.
>>52683415
This, it's It's Pathfinder/DnD. Why isn't he living in a magical summoned mansion or a ropetrick?
>>52683453
Where would he get his mail sent?
And, he can have traps INSIDE his magical mansion inside a demiplane.

So I'm running 4e soon for some friends but I'm a little uncertain about what to do with regards to monster creation. I know of all the common houserules, free expertise/improved defences and use the MM3/MV monster math, but how does that relate to the guidelines presented in the DMG?
The non-mathematical guidelines still seem solid, but aside from the simplified MM3 on a business card you see floating around, does anywhere have a more comprehensive breakdown of the new monster math, more like the DMG tables shown here? Or at the very least some formulas/principles I could use to write out the updated tables for my own purposes, as a quick reference.
MM3 on a business card, for reference. Some things are directly stated, but it's the various bits of tertiary information that I'd like to find a reference for, or at least a solid way to extrapolate them from the given numbers.
I don't have any good comprehensive breakdowns for you but there's a couple of good blog posts out there on how to design good solos etc...
Personally I just reflavour existing monsters, with MM3, MV, MV - Threats to the Nentir Vale and Dark Sun Creature Catalog there's more than enough to go around.
Regarding design principles comparing MM1 and MM3 creatures will show that past all the numbers the changes are in giving creatures more options like triggered effects, once per encounter abilities with some interesting effect and so on.
Stay away from debilitating effects like Stunned and Dazed and instead try to do ongoing damage, per-encounter shift, extra movement, something that creates, alters or otherwise interacts with terrain. Or some attack action as a minor action / free action that does something other than damage.

Orkz will be good one day edition

Shit I need something to make this thread live
uh, what change are you most hopeful for in 8th edition?
Dark Angels, Blood Angels or Tau? I'm a new player and can't decide. I would go for Tau because I like mechs and an army that is consistently good without needing to own a large variety of different units to suit the meta. However it looks like I'll need to shell out a mountain of cash. The "Start Collecting" set is only 250 points.
>>52682762
DA, but only for those sweet sweet bikes
Why doesn't WOTC let the community design at least like1 card a set? I think that'd be a really cool idea
>>52682324
Because then we would get good cards
>>52682324
It would be nice if not for the fact people usually don't have good idea what 'balance' is.
>>52682358
basically this.
Hey /tg/, my group and I usually play D&D campaigns in pretty much a traditional way — fantasy setting, combat heavy. The thing is, it's been a while since I crave something more focused on politics and intrigues (the politics of ancient rome, medieval courts etc.), but I don't feel like D&D is a good system for that. I have some experience in WoD (especially vampire) but I get the feeling that the mechanics are a wee bit crude and simplified — even though the settings are generally quite political. So I was wondering if anyone could point me in the direction of a good RPG system that has interesting social and political mechanics. I've read somewhere that aSoIaF is a good system in this regard, but I've never read or played it. Can you give me some adivice?
TL:DR Any good political RPG systems in regards to mechanics? (I don't care about settings or world building, since I'll be creating my own)
You could try Burning Wheel. It has nice mechanics like Duel of the Wits and such.

You seem upset.
Whenever I hear people talking about D6, it's always about how shit it is, and hoe the skill system doesn't work. Can somebody give me a quick runthrough on the pros and flaws of D6? The system seems to be a slightly lighter GURPS more than anything
I'm not too well-versed in it, but it seems a lot of the flaws stem from the difference in averages between two different die codes, resulting in things like the blaster-proof Wookie in the Star Wars games, though I hear using the static combat from Mini Six alleviates it some.

system must use a non-euclidian 47-sided die that manages a bell curve in shape of Kanna Kamui's ass or it's absolute shiiit
As an hive mind created by a legion of undead-creatures, each of them imbued by is power.
Can it work?
What are the limitations of this?
What, you mean like a rhizome? The GitS: Solid State Society movie handled the concept well, I think.
>>52680734
I didn't know that,
I thought I was being original.....
Now I'm sad.....
Good JOB ANON!
in all fairness id never heard of >>52680734 either. still, excellent idea.
Is this card any good?
I think it's very powerful but it's too early to say whether it's going to be competitive
The value it provides if it sticks around is so insane
>>52679387
As a 3 mana walker, it dies to bolt and doesn't get much value (you probably have a ~50% chance to hit a land/1 drop mana dork). The + and the 0 definitely work well together, but you are asking a lot. However, it's very flexible and has applications late game as a good mana sink and a way to actually kill your opponent. I don't quite think its modern playable, but if there is a home for it in standard, it could definitely be a powerhouse.
>>52679387
Definitely has more potential than Gideon and Liliana, but I still wouldn't quite count on it being Modern playable.
How do you dorks tend to go about this? Is the new character a level lower than previous?
is it level 1? do they have to sit idle until they are revived somehow?
In our group we start the new character off at the current level of deceased PC but with no XP because it just seemed natural.
>>52677953
Isn't it rude to punish the new player for the previous player's mortal frailty by downgrading the new player's character? I mean, we all die eventually.
>Character dies
>Gets knocked back a level
>Character is now weaker and more easily killed
>Keeps happening until they're level 1
>Dies again
Fuck it, guess they're playing a Wight now
>>52677953
Death is permanent, make a new character at the current XP of the party.
I have parties gain experience at the same rate because it discourages them trying to one-up each other and a character lagging behind punishes the whole group (in a good group) rather than just the lower character.
