Given that the last thread on the subject was surprisingly excellent, here's another one:

We make up details of a superhero setting where the Middle East region takes the place America (or the US, or New York, or Manhattan) does in much of comics. Everything interesting happens there. Aliens land in the Middle East. Atlantis is in the Middle East. Gods come to the Middle East. Any mutants just so happen to be born in the Middle East. All the important heroes are from the Middle East. If anyone isn't, they're a one-off caricature of whatever country they're from and never significant to the plot.

I want to make a Wild Talents setting out of this, it's just a fantastic idea.

There must be at least one mummy lurking around in the setting, but I don't know whether it would be a hero or a villain.

It's neither, it's the fucking mummy. Not one of the good guys, not one of the bad guys, not something intbetween. It's one of the mummy guys doing mummy things.

as much as I like this game, my player-base is too new to RPGs to handle how complicated the system is.

we're gonna do shadowrun soonish, and after that maybe we can do something so very crunch-heavy. but until then we're sitting down with just bog standard D&D.

I kind of wish Lawful Nice would come back and do a really good official edit and re-work of the book 2 so the vehicle rules are more clear
>>
>>52733593
vehicle rules are a fucking mess, is the only complain I have with the system

and true, this game is better enjoyed the more RPG experience the players have, although one of my players is a girl who has only played D&D5ed before and she is enjoying it a lot (although the bitch is constantly asking her boyfriend to do the math for her and asking what to roll, but considering that at least she is quick on deciding actions I don't mind)

what would you play?

In a world with mass produced flying cars, what would be a believable reason for trains still existing? Less risky? Cheaper than flying mass transport? Can haul heavier loads than their flying counterparts?
11 posts and 2 images submitted.
>>
>>52733020
>Cheaper than flying mass transport? Can haul heavier loads than their flying counterparts?
Probably a mix of those two. A train doesn't need to run its hover-engine like a flying truck does just to keep itself from crashing into the ground. It's probably more energy efficient as a result.
>>
Consider how much force it must take to keep a levitated object airborn and able to redirect itself at a moment's notice, and then how much faster you could get if you redirected that same incredible force along a railway track.

Those trains should be moving significantly faster as they are not fighting gravity or inertia, especially if they're maglev trains.
>>
>>52733020
> The tracks are still there; all the infrastructure doesn't need to be rebuilt, just maintained.
> Big engine, little friction, maybe even maglev/ground effect rather than full hover. Much more efficient.
> Slow compared to a flying truck, but gets there eventually. Good for non-perishable bulk cargo and cheapskate passengers
> Still goes straight into the centre of existing old cities.
> Government subsidies

In 3 days i will be attending A LARP event in Poland set in the witcher universe.

So i recently got my character sheet. and it turns out my whole village wasmudrerfucked and tortured to death by Elves as a result of an elven rebellion.

As a result i loathe Elves more than the monsters i will be learning to kill in witcher school. Franky the only way i will put my trust into an els is to put my trust into my blade, and my blade in the elf.

so i would like to be able to show my discust for these pointy eared forrest deamons in any dark/serious way.

TL;DR Help me find good (serious) ways of insulting the elven race

He's in Poland. That won't happen.

I went to a convention where I specifically decided to try out all the LARPs.

The first one was a vampiric political intrigue game where everyone was supposed to gain something for themselves and it was super gritty and VtM like, almost, except in a more "Transylvanian" setting. My character was a dark vampire from Turkey who was a bandit king travelling incognito. The game was 100% serious guise, we swear. The larpmaster gave me the name of Ahmed al-Kebab.

The second LARP I played on that convention it was a Warhammer 40000 game where my character was literally named Bert Goldstein and was a merchant. My win condition was supposed to successfully pressure the fucking Space Marines into putting more resources into liberating a world where all of my assets are. At the end it turned out one of the Imperials at the party was a Chaos Space Marine in disguise and he killed us all, and the Larpmaster cheerfully told us later that all of the assets on my planet were completely and absolutely doomed anyway, so I would have just caused grief had I succeeded in my attempts. On top of that, to my knowledge of WH40K - that I could be labeled a heretic as a civilian trying to mouth off to an inquisitor - had me pretty much forced to yield whenever someone flexed muscles.

In the third game I played that day, I was an old Jewish man abused by a policeman who would literally call me a fucking piece of shit that should have burnt in an oven while pushing a prop gun into my skull.

OP will do fine.

I love creating home-brew settings full of rich lore and lots of backstory, history and interesting cultures, and judging by the number of world building threads we have and /tg/ created settings, I imagine many anons here enjoy world building as well.

However, I players very often aren't interested or don't have the time to read through all of the lore of the worlds you create and so very often you have to introduce the world to them through their characters. This can create complications when the character should be familiar with the setting but the player is not. How does one introduce the players to the setting without causing this disconnect.

currently I am creating a setting for GURPS at a Bronze Age tech level, with feuding city states and a powerful monastic order, all under threat from an expansionist empire who sacrifice conquered peoples to their Sun God so that he does not swallow the world. The gods of the setting are also quite active with numerous petty gods demanding prayers for their services, such as speeding your way along a road, or giving you a full harvest.
How should I go about introducing the players to this setting in a manner natural for their characters?

I just do It. I just play the game like It's fucking nothing. Should anything make the concerned, explain. If they have no idea what now or close to do something dumb, explain the context, suggest choices.
Just make them explore the world as they go.
Never drop info dumps on them, just vaguely explain what and how and only include details that really matter.
It ain't rocket science. Look at any movie or video game. You don't need like a majority of the universe's lore to enjoy It.
The whole lore thing is mostly for people that are already hooked on the setting. Shame that a lot of your ideas will never see any exposition but this is not what them ttrpgs are about.
Consider writing a book

Help a rookie out /tg/, I'm considering painting miniatures for the first time.

What tools should I get?
What basic paint set could you recommend?
Where should I buy it?
What's the cheapest you can go while still having some basic quality?

>>
>>52731341
I would recommend any Vallejo paint set, and Winser Newton brushes. If WN's are too expensive for you I'd say go army painter. You can get primer from a hobby store and it will work just fine.

Aside from that get some sanding sticks, an exacto knife, and some plastic clippers you'll be golden.
>>
>>52731341
Go to your local hardware store and buy a can of rustoleum brand primer. Which color you want depends on what you want to paint; black will give a darker look and make it easy to cover up mistakes and ignore patches, white will pop and be bright and eye catching, grey is the middle ground. If yellow is prominent in your motif, absolutely prime in white.

After that, Vallejo brand paints are your best friend*. If you're doing a historical thing, Warlord Games sells preselected paint sets for various historical countries by time period.

*Exception: While Games Workshop's Citadel paint line is usually unremarkable, the "Technical" range are amazing and you should definitely use them because they're great easy ways to accomplish what you need.
>>
>>52731581
>>52731612
So, primer, Vallejo and some basic precision tools, awesome. Good to know, thanks!
So what price-range am I looking at for a starter setup?

I've also discovered the /wip/ thread and the painting tutorials, that should be a great help. And if memes have thought me anything, I should thin my paints.

Do any of you anon have experience playing D&D using the Rules Cyclopedia as your system? He actually says "D&D Basic / Advanced Dungeons and Dragons" in the subject. Not quite sure why 2e was specifically excluded in this line though: "Also general D&D / AD&D 1st ed thread."

>Check the catalog next time.
If you're not that familiar with /osr/, you might not know to look for it, or you might think you'd get a better response creating your own thread (while in actuality, I think you'll get a worse response more times than not, as I think the grogs are more likely than others to keep themselves to themselves). So yeah, asking your questions in the /osr/ general might not be a bad idea (though it is admittedly getting a bit long in the tooth now).

Anyway, as far as the subject goes, B/X is more my thing when it comes to Basic D&D, so I don't have much experience with BECMI or the RC, which I think add more extraneous shit than is necessary, moving the game at least partway in the direction of AD&D (though it's still a decent bit more streamlined than that).

As far as AD&D vs. Basic goes, AD&D has more options (more classes, more spells... more everything, really), but a good deal of clutter, and fiddly stats and restrictions and so forth. I think that Basic is a better game for what it actually covers, though depending on your outlook, it may not cover enough for your tastes. My approach at this point is to selectively port shit from AD&D to Basic, which is pretty easy, as they both use the same core system and are really very similar (AD&D just stacks more shit on top). Of course, Labyrinth Lord's Advanced Edition Companion seeks to marry AD&D's expanded options with Basic's more streamlined core, so that's another way to go. But then you were asking about the RC in any case...
>>

>thanks for your thoughtful response. I dig the idea of using Basic and implementing hand picked things from AD&D that work for me.

>not quite sure why 2e was specifically excluded in this line though

I guess I could have included 2nd edition but I mainly am wanting to try the earlier stuff because I havn't played much of that material it at all and want to know more. I would really like to start with basic out of the RC and then once my players have a grip on the rules (a few of my players are pretty green, only 1 other person has any serious gaming experience) and then eventually integrate AD&D stuff or just convert using the tables in the RC when we run an AD&D module.

>Of course, Labyrinth Lord's Advanced Edition Companion seeks to marry AD&D's expanded options with Basic's more streamlined core, so that's another way to go.

From what I have read, ll looks really neat. I am really into playing through Mystara and Greyhawk stuff, isn't it true that ll is pretty much compatible with all of that?
