>a player tries to use their real-world knowledge to create guns, explosives, penicillin, etc. in a setting where those haven't been invented yet

Is there a better way to handle this than saying "You can't"?

It's a fantasy world. There is no reason chemistry works the same way, or even exists.

They're trying to do something based on the periodic table? Tough luck, this world works on the classical greek elements, you just made a useless but expensive powder.

Trying to make penicillin? What the fuck is a bacterium? Life in this universe was literally created by the gods. Diseases are actually magical in origin, the way they were once believed, while herbal cures are based on symbolic magic to restore the wholeness of certain parts of the body.

If need be, establish these metaphysical rules up front, but if someone insists on being an arse feel free to pull it out of nowhere just to spite them.

Have a reasonable conversation with them about the process of invention and the nature of powergaming? If they want to play a genius inventor and that's something that fits your setting, you can work out with them OOC what they can reasonably expect to accomplish during the game. (IE saying they can't invent a complete engine, but they can make great strides in many of the basic machine technologies at the time, improving mills and some architecture projects in the process)

I will say that Paladin is a solid choice in my opinion.
>>
Be a variant human. Take Diplomat as your feat: http://media.wizards.com/2017/dnd/downloads/UA-SkillFeats.pdf

Be a paladin of the Oath of Redemption: http://media.wizards.com/2017/dnd/downloads/UAThreeSubclasses.pdf

By level 3, with Charisma modifier +3, you can have Persuasion +7. That goes up to +12 with Channel Divinity (Emissary of Peace).

Take a level in mystic. Choose the Order of the Nomad. Mantle of Joy, Nomadic Mind, and Third Eye. Dedicate your psionic focus to the Mantle of Joy for advantage on all Charisma (Persuasion) checks.

http://media.wizards.com/2017/dnd/downloads/UA_Downtime.pdf
Spend your time carousing and making as many friends as possible with your reliably high Charisma (Persuasion), and then get them to do your dirty work.

Long story short my players have made a deal with a wererat, in exchange for curing him, he'll give them needed information to advance a quest their on.

Does anyone have any creative or memorable ways of curing lyncanthropy? The 'remove curse' spell feels way too easy.

>wererat,
Yiff in hell
>>
Not one I've actually DM'd / played out yet, but one option is a sort of trance / inner conflict involved. Lycanthropy only able to take hold by latching onto some aspect of the afflicted's character and - even with the aid of Remove Curse - this aspect needing to be addressed before they can truly find peace.

This could range anywhere from something more generous (afflicted must either make peace with that aspect or prove that it no longer applies, failure still giving them temporary reprieve but not fixing it permanently) to more strict (only one or the other: If making peace trying to fight it tears them apart, if fighting it making peace gives it the reigns; failure is not "Try again next spell" but at best "Your spell did nothing" at worst "It's permanent now").

So that this isn't entirely out of the PCs hands, you could either have some spells / effects they could provide the afflicted help (ex: Raise their Wisdom, even if just temporarily, or make a Charisma check to help guide them through it), this conflict be inside their mind while physically they Lycanthrope-out and try to escape (the PCs keeping them from running to hold their own body hostage), etcetera.

Alternatively, unrelated to all the above, one option is that "curing" lycanthropy draws out the curse from the host and leaves you with one of two options:
1) Put it into somebody else (if you don't purposefully do so, it'll find somebody ALA Azazel from Fallen)
2) Finding some way to contain, damage, or even destroy the extracted curse (imprison it in a gemstone, extract it under the darkness of a new moon, confront it with a more powerful curse, etc).

Am I the only one who thinks Wizards has been making planeswalkers with ults TOO DAMN STRONG. A lot of them just end the game, and it wouldn't be nearly so bad if I could interact with emblems at all.
121 posts and 11 images submitted.
>>
>>52761100
I'm sure the argument is that if your deck can't handle a planeswalker either by attacking it or some kind of removal before the ult goes off, you were in a losing position anyway.
>>
All versions of Garruk besides the GB one crushed an unreal amount of puss.

So no, you're not the only one who thinks that but that's only because you people didn't play with the originals when they were able to fight with and against Lightning Bolt unlike the godawful lack of interaction you have with today's Planeswalkers.
>>
>>52761100
Planeswalker cards were a mistake. The players are supposed to be the only planeswalkers, so making cards of NPC 'Walkers is stupid and cheapens everything. I mean they had to invent the whole Neowalker thing to even tone them down enough to print them because old school planeswalkers were damn near deific.

I apologize if this is in the wrong board, but I'm an inexperienced 4chan user and was unsure of where this question should go. That said...

First, the backstory: I was shopping at my local Rite today and I overheard the cashier talking to his supervisor about Destiny, particularly about the Hive, how powerful they are, how OP Oryx is, and so on. I generally don't pay much attention when I'm there because this kid has Asperger's Syndrome and thus is completely incapable of not talking for even five seconds. What cought my attention this time was when he made the following claim:

"So yeah, I'm pretty sure the Hive could EASILY defeat everybody in Warhammer 40K."

His supervisor is actually a pretty cool chick who I don't know personally but have often seen in the local hobby scene, and proceeded to counter every one of his claims (at one point mentioning that a Hive invasion sounds like a pretty basic Chaos Daemon incursion, which every single faction has faced before numerous times). But no matter what she said, he always replied with something like "nope, the Hive is too numerous", "no, Oryx could just Take them", etc. At one point, he admitted that he didn't actually know anything about Warhammer 40K at all, and what little he did know came from an outdated rulebook for the tabletop game he'd read at a bookstore once while waiting for a bus, but still refused to believe that any of the factions could possibly stand even the slightest chance against the Hive.

So now, out of curiousity, I posit the question to you, my fellow anons. What do you think? How do you think the Hive would fare against the factions of 40K (whether 1v1 or free-for-all)?

See, the first problem is that Destiny is a video game. So it has a lot of game fiats like being able to kill Oryx with sniper rifles and rocket launchers.

The other thing is that these universes work on entirely different cosmology. Transplanting one into the other breaks the entire setting because the underlying rules are different.

I will say this though, as the lore is stated in the Book of Sorrows, without having Light to defeat his Darkness based powers, there is literally nothing in 40k that could kill him. He is paracausal. He could assfuck time if he wanted. He actually does do that. Similarly, the Vex would destroy the entire 40k universe instantly because without the Light or Dark telling their time travel shenanigans to go fuck themselves they would just go back to the beginning of time and be everywhere.
>>
>>52760628
Of course, thinking about it, that cosmology mis-mash works both ways. Does Oryx have a 40k soul or presence in the warp? Could he just be instantly possessed?

You can't just go jamming universes together like this. It just doesn't work.

Anyone else been feeling nostalgic about Adeptus Evangelion? It seems that, inbetween all the edition drama, general shittery and military-grade autism the whole thing has been slowly forgotten on /tg/.

But, I suppose the other problem is that people who have played or GMed it since the olden days of V2 are all out of fresh ideas. There have been times when I thought to myself 'maybe I should run it one last time' yet I can never muster any creativity, any new idea after having played it so much. The fact the last NGE movie have been utter garbage probably helped kill the game and anyone's interest in it. Or maybe we've all moved on from it.

Still, one more thread for the sake of old times? Anyone still playing it?

I'm GMing Borderline, probably bound to wrap up in the next few months.

While it's not a bad system, a lot of the issues are tied into Dark Heresy's own flaws (Skill bloat, some odd rules interactions, the power of Full-Auto). The other issue I seem to have is the concern I have in trying to better build a challenge for my team. Most of the sessions either end up interactions with rather infrequent fights (Hell, my last session had them take the roles of MP Evas tearing Sachiel a new one), and I struggle to figure out how to cover the in-between for them.

That said though, I've had fun seeing my team develop as characters, and if I can say I've done anything good, it's figuring out new ways to spin on the material provided.

>>52759692
That's pretty heavily exaggerated. The vast majority of things that are wrong in the world are humanity's fault; you could argue whether or not the Weaver and Wyrm inspired them or just fed on them, but really, humans have fucked up much more and much harder than the Garou.

I need you to pass judgment on me here, /tg/. The first campaign I've ever GM'd just ended in TPK. Specifically, the PC's accepted a mission contract for hostage rescue and threat elimination. They knew the hostiles had a bomb and three valuable hostages in a manor house. The raid went smoothly apart from one thing. Because of the bomb threat, they chose to kill every single enemy as soon as they encountered them, not knowing that the bomb was in fact on a dead man's switch. Hostiles all dead and the hostages retrieved, they proceeded to calmly search the premises for the bomb only to perish in the automated detonation. Their usual modus operandi is to take hostiles alive for intel and extra reward money, and my intention had been for them to end up having to negotiate with the baddies to remain unexploded.

Now the players are all pissed off with me, because they insist I should have dropped the whole dead man's switch shenanigans when they started killing off the hostiles, but I don't like the idea of changing mission details after the mission has started. Am I in the wrong here?
79 posts and 9 images submitted.
>>
Depends on your style of GMing and what your group enjoys.

In general, though? You should have given them some very clear hints that the bomb was on the people, chances for them to realise and find a way around it.

You have learnt a pretty valuable lesson, though- Never make assumptions that the PCs will act in a certain way. Always be open to the possibility that they will do something different that you didn't expect.

On the whole changing details thing, as said above that's very much up to style. Personally I intentionally leave myself grey areas and ambiguities that I can exploit and define if and when they become important or useful, but other GMs like to define everything ahead of time and to try to be 'fair' about it.
>>
>>52758389
Fuck no.
That's asinine, it isn't your job to cover for them if their plan is narrow-minded.
>>
>>52758389

Really depends on your group. It sounds like you built a fun mission that suits their playstyle, so kudos to you for that. When it started looking like they were going to just kill everyone though, you probably could've swapped it to being a timed explosion.

Given the PC's a chance to evacuate, or try to disarm the bomb so that if they screwed it up then, they would have died.

In my experience, nothing makes players angrier than not knowing they're risking death. It's really fun for us as the DM's, but players capital HATE dying for "no reason".

Time for another thread to show off your dudes - models, lore, rules, whatever you've come up with!

I'll start - I'm working on a Blood Angels successor founded from the legion's boarding assault specialists. They're blue to represent how deoxygenated blood looks through the skin - because there's no oxygen in the void and all.

I also want to give them a higher amount than average of Mk IV armour because I like it, and maybe let them use Anvillus-pattern backpacks because of it's apparent void suitability.

My Skitarii and color scheme, big armor is dark bronze, small Skitarii are steel. The additional Cult Mechanicus forces (mostly kastelans because robots fuck yeah) are also from the same world, Agri-world Emeritus. The forges dominate the smaller continent of the two, while the larger continent is an agricultural/paradise world with a lot of Eldar ruins, and a nice 2-year long cycle of seasons. They've awoken after 6000 years of stasis, brought back into active duty due to the impeccable timing of their ancient clockwork timers.

Before we get into it.

Pathfinder does a touch better than what 3.5 did but only a touch. It needed to take a very hard look over at the subject of the core spell lists. They only really changed the polymorph school, when they needed to address low level hard CC like sleep. They just were not brave to the point of say changing sleep to single target only but with no hit dice cap.

>>52756900

This issue is merely more talked about in D&D. Other games with classes or pseudo-classes have the same type of issues. Only war, l5r 3rd & 4th edition, VtM are all examples that I have seen it come up[ in. In VtM clans are pseudo-classes with some clan's disciples are just WAY better then others. There is built in social disadvantages in all clans but which ones get the worst of it do not line up with the ones who get the best in clan disciples.
