They're about to start exploring a fantasy counterpart culture of Rome, so I'll be throwing latin triple-names at them, like Junius Martius Catullus and whatever. I fully expect them to have a giggle at every single one, however.

It's an FFG game, so:

>there'll be high production values
>there'll be a metric buttload of extraneous dials, tokens, and whacky dice
>it'll be well balanced, with solid rules and no broken combos
>it'll only ever be in stock three times a year, when the stars are right

Take all this into account before buying in, because even for FFG, it's a bit expensive.

The core set will be well balanced, but you'll find yourself needing to buy expansions you don't really want at all because one powerful upgrade card is in there.

Strictly as a matter of power, what would it take for your character to bow?

Do they care at all about the appearance of surrender? Do they only bow to those rightfully better? Would they ever bow to the vile? The meager?

Last time on Song of Swords:

The KS link & Opaque's website
https://www.kickstarter.com/projects/2006613790/song-of-swords-tabletop-roleplaying-game
http://www.songofswords.net/

Song of Swords is a a tabletop RPG centered around realistic medieval fightan' with a ludicrous variety of weapons and fighting styles, centered around a dice pool system. It's currently in beta, and can be used for both fantasy and historical games. The Kickstarter was nearly 300% funded, and we're on the fast track to kicking ass baby.

Call of the Void: Ballad of the Laser Whales is a pulpy sci-fi tabletop RPG about fighting space-nazis and hunting giant whales with harpoons made out of the moon. Its combat system is more modern, based in the early 20th century, but can probably handle combat up to the present day.

MEGA folder containing current version of the game and all supplementary materials.
Note that the latest version of the game is v1.9.9 but with additional supplements. It's NOT what's currently on Opaque's website, because Jimmy is Jimmy.
https://mega.nz/#F!S89jTT7J!ozFi9GvzaFGHfBa59Ik2-Q

Here's a wiki detailing SoS's fantasy setting, getting filled up bit by bit as Jimmy reveals more details:
http://tattered-realms.wikia.com/wiki/Tattered_Realms_Wiki

There's also a roll20 room where new players are encouraged to try the rules, test new rules, and find game breaking issues: https://app.roll20.net/join/346755/hRKd4w
If you're looking to learn, post here in the thread.

We also play Guy Windsor's card game Audatia in the room, but now we have a much better way to play Audatia: Tabletop Simulator! The (official!) mod for Audatia is now up and running!

At last we no longer need to fiddle with Roll20 to play Audatia. Now all decks and the armor and German expansions are available for anyone with Tabletop Simulator to play for free!

It's in the OP, but here too: http://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=904774480
Guy Windsor even wrote about the mod on his blog. http://guywindsor.net/blog/2017/04/audatia-online-free-tabletop-simulator/
Guy gave his permission to upload the mod, so this is effectively the official Audatia mod.

I used to think Tabletop Simulator was a gimmicky program and not very good, but then I got it on sale for half price and it turns out it's actually very good. It regularly has meaningful updates; just yesterday it got an update bringing it to 64-bit.

If you're at all interested in the game, please check out the link and download it.

Are commissars really allowed to execute guardsmen on accounts of "heretical behavior"?

I mean they aren't part of the ecclesiarchy. They aren't mandated by the Ministorum. I don't see why they'd have any authority to declare what's heretical behavior and what isn't.

In fact, does the fluff actually contain any examples of commissars calling someone a heretic, or bringing up the Imperial dogma as a justification for executing a guardsman?
14 posts and 1 images submitted.
>>
This is not a setting where a heretic is just someone that is an infidel and needs to be killed for not worshiping the one true god.
This is a setting where there's a good chance that a heretic will suddenly explode into a many-limbed abomination that ravenously seeks to consume the men that were once its brothers.

Commissars need to be prepared to spot signs of Chaos worship, especially when fighting Chaos. They can't risk a turncoat in the ranks, especially one that might spontaneously transform into a Spawn of Chaos.
>>
>I mean they aren't part of the ecclesiarchy. They aren't mandated by the Ministorum.

A lot of them are trained by the Schola Progenium though. They're responsible for morale and discipline so it's a safe bet a lot of them are pretty religious.
>>
>>52765690
>I mean they aren't part of the ecclesiarchy.

Does that stop the Divisio Immoralis of the Adeptus Arbites, or the Prefecture Magesterium of the Cult Mechanicus, or the myriad Ordos of the Inquisition? No, heresy is defined, not interpreted by the will of the Ecclesiarchy (at least in theory, in practice they get to bend the rules when the water gets murky depending on their disposition), the entire Adeptus Terra is within their rights to inflict punishment for transgressions of the Imperial Creed, Imperial Tithe and Imperial Law, though obviously each has a general presence within all three aspects of society differing depending on their specialisation.

That being said, a vast majority of Guardsmen executions are not for the violation of the Imperial Creed, but Imperial Law and the duties they signed up to under the Astra Militarum.

For further clarification, being born under the Schola Progenium in a vast majority of cases (a heavily Ministorum-influenced and intertwined institution, might I add), they've effectively been mandated to do their duty, which includes execution of heresy, by the rest of the Adeptus Terra.

Tell me about the times you served the Computer, citizens. I wish to take notes on how to run a good game for a group so I can help combat Communism.

I've never played as a troubleshooter, but I have hosted many games.

Basically, I like to take everything the players say and use it against them. The players should never feel safe. If a player jokes about shooting someone in the head, make them roll an Energy Weapons check immediately.

Also, reward them for throwing their fellow troubleshooters under the bus. This is a game about treachery. Encourage players to look for ways to accuse their teammates of being mutant-commie-traitors.

I'll say one last thing. Confuse and mislead the hell out of your players. I make the session more about them trying to make it to the mission location alive rather than actually completing the mission. Alpha Complex should be full of dead ends, crowded corridors, abandoned rooms, broken lifts, and anything else that will get in the way of a team of troubleshooters. Troubleshooters will come up with the most hilarious and backwards ways to make the best of any given situation, if you put enough pressure on them.

Example: After the mission brief, a player was given an experimental megaphone that was to be tested. It had no particular value for the specific mission, but Friend Computer always appreciates volunteers to test technology. The troubleshooter team came to a hallway where the floor was painted completely orange and was filled with orange-clad citizens. They were too paranoid to step on the orange floor, for they were only at red level clearance. The player with the experimental megaphone used it to try and shout over the hubbub and get directions to the mission location. When he lowered the megaphone, all of the orange citizens had been exploded, and the entire hallway was painted red with gore. The hygiene officer ordered some cleaning bots to the area, and they then proceeded down the red hallway.
>>
My usual way to run Paranoia games are to come up with a fairly ill-defined mission that needs doing then throw in secret society jobs for the players that are some combination of "mutually exclusive with the goals of the actual mission", "mutually exclusive with another job given to another player", "sort of against the actual goals of the secret society in question", "one hundred percent certainly against the goals of the secret society in question" and "deceptively simple".

They give the players some toys which they can use to complete their mission. That coupled with their mutant powers will usually be enough rope to hang themselves with. In my experience, that's usually the trick - a group that's into Paranoia will simply need to be given their sandbox, a flimsy reason to play in it and some toys to throw at one another and the game will work itself out.

Planning a few scenarios can help to speed things up when things start to slow down, and it shouldn't be too difficult to come up with these based on the mission and the secret society jobs you've handed out - you know what everyone is mostly aiming towards.

As much as I love Paranoia, it really requires a group that's on board to play it. I know that sounds really fucking stupid, because the same is true to some extent in all roleplaying games, but players that don't "get" it can sap the enjoyment right out of it.
>>
>>52764658
I never ran or played actual Paranoia, but I did run something quite similar. The players were
members of special forces during the peak of cold war tasked to investigate a secret govermental lab facility which stopped responding to communication. They were randomly picking from premade character sheets and before the mission started, they were warned that there might be a spy or a traitor among their ranks so they should watch their backs.

The thing is, actually everyone was a traitor with some kind of different secret agenda going on and everyone was 100% convinced that they were the only one. Shit was fun as hell. I might describe it in more detail if you're interested

I think some of the stuff needs to be hammered out still, but making allowances for it being a playtest right now to find how the beta version plays with existing rules I still think it has good potential as a way to make building martial artists more interesting without occupying the same space as Path of War.

It won't be for everyone but that's an asinine criteria because there is literally nothing in this game that everyone who plays it likes.

For reference, in Age of Rebellion fighting an Imperial I class ISD is suicidal unless you have an MC80 somehow on your side, and then it's still a difficult fight you're more likely to lose than win. If you have anything less, don't even try fighting one unless you outnumber it 12 to 1.

Then an Executor class super star destroyer is equivalent to well over a dozen Imperial II class star destroyers, which are significantly more powerful than the Imperial I class., and the Executor itself is still stronger than them.

Then for reference know that at the Battle of Endor, the only reason that one of the Executor's multiple backup command bridges didn't go into action is because they were taken by surprise and faced technical issues while performing wargame maneuvers, and couldn't take over. Under normal circumstances, the A Wing that crashed into its main bridge wouldn't have hurt it much at all.

Then take into account that the Rebel fleet outnumbered the Imperial fleet at Endor and had to concentrate all fire on the Executor just to bring its shields down. It had numerous layers of extremely durable armor that could resist conventional turbolaser bombardment unless it was hit in large numbers.

Then take into reference that in one-to-one battles the Executor was shown vaporizing MC80s, the Alliance's best ships, in seconds. Seconds.

Then take it into account that at the time of Hoth no conventional warships in the galaxy could compare to an Imperial II or MC80. Then remember the Executor dwarfed both of those astronomically.

What's all this mean? You won't win. You and the entire army you hire will die very quick deaths. If you bring a truly massive, overwhelming army and fight the Executor on its own, you will have maybe five extra minutes before you and the entire army die very quick deaths.

It's not a suicide mission, it's suicide.
>>
Are there any rates for how quickly the empire could produce fighters? That is to say, how fast does an average factory work once it's up and running? Does it pump out a hundred fighters a week? A month? A thousand?
>>
>>52764210
Even if you miraculously (and miraculously is an understatement) got into the Executor, you'd still have to deal with many thousands of stormtroopers, crew, and officers. There's no chance at all.

On August 4th, 2020, the world was invaded by hostile aliens so that they could steal our fresh water, as they had irreversibly polluted their home planet.
In desperation, the US government kidnaps you from your home and places you into their top secret super soldier program
Each participant got an ability, to be used to repel the alien menace.
How useful are YOU, in saving our world?
