Every group I've been in has been kind of the same. Rag tag group of misfits that mostly fails their way to success via the most unorthodox path possible. Judging by a lot of the stories that get shared, I assume this is pretty common... but is it universal?
Has anyone ever played a game in which your group was competent? How about good? Has there ever been a tabletop group where the PCs were all really, really good at their jobs? I don't mean "has high stats" or "rolled well" but in which the characters all seemed like competent, resourceful individuals who actually got shit done without it turning into a clusterfuck?
Sort of?
I played a somewhat run of the mill "hired by the church of x to defeat hordes of undead" campaign where everyone was more or less experts in that particular line of work and were chosen for that purpose - you had a ranger that specialized in corpse hunting, a tomb raider rogue, a cleric who was more of the scholarly monk type whose breadth of knowledge (and literacy) was immensely helpful, and me, the two hundred year old vampire paladin who fucking hated vampires.
Early game we had on lock down and only started getting thrown curve balls when skeletal fey started showing up.
I wasn't a player but my mate ran a Dark Heresy campaign where the party went full operator-as-fuck in the Storm Trooper/Guardsmen vein. They meticulously planned every single engagement, if time wasn't an issue they'd spend days staking out trouble spots or acquiring the tech/data for an accurate floor plan and more. Funnily enough only one of them was actually an army bloke. They rolled through every encounter so easily the GM admitted he had to just start throwing shit in so that it didn't look like the cultists were complete scrubs.
>>52781425
Every Shadow Run game I have been in has started out as the rag tag group of misfits, but when you get to higher karma play, planning becomes basically everything.
A big thing in shadow run when you start raiding mega corps and things like that is you not only have to have a plan going in, but when going out as well. You have to cover your tracks and do things with a ruthless efficiency. Because guess what and track left uncovered is one the GM can use to FUCK YOU.
One spell that wasn't astral scrubbed, one piece of data left unchecked by a hacker, hell not picking up ammunition casings can allow a Mega corp to trace the raid right back to you.

Welcome to the Casual General! This is the thread for all things magic related that may not be top tier. Whether it's kitchen table, a $25 jank homebrew, or some low tier standard deck, feel free to bring it in.
Thread Question: What's your favorite budget combo/synergy to use?
If Paper Pauper was officially supported by Wizards and became popular, would it stay super diverse? Seems like all Pauper is is homebrews, but EDH started the same way, and has now become a more competitive format.
>>52779319
Your pic related with mine
I remember when EDH was casual jank. And then spikes invaded from the other formats when the casual minded people left so now it is infested with combo and stax.
What other format is there that is casual minded but with less spikes? I like being able to play cards that cost over 3 mana.

So, it's finally my turn to GM in my group of friends. We've had five other campaigns, all with a different GM, which have gone epicly. Each time we voted for a premise and then tried to find a system to fit it (We used to only do pathfinder until one off shoot campaign freed us.)
Now the new guy in the group, which everyone seems okay with but me, has convinced the rest of them they want to play a survival gathering game. Knowing him, he wants to play tabletop minecraft but calling him out didn't change their minds. I'm not gonna be the ass-head to quit on the rest of my friends just to spite this guy, so I need some help from you guys on a system recommendation. Friends have some requirements, wants, and dislikes I'll list, hit me with anything that you think may fit. Thanks ahead of time.
REQUIREMENTS:
Needs magic or a power that isn't guns & blades or vancian.
Some sort of survival aspect built in or from a sourcebook.
Less than ~50 pages of rules for players.
Wants:
Balanced character options, no tiers of classes.
Diverse setting options, system could be used fantasy, technopunk, modern, etc.
Dislikes:
Not FATE (Long story)
Simple combat
Railroaded progression systems (Like that of D&D 3.5 and PF where you need to take levels in low hp classes for good spells as an example.)
>>52778576
Tricky. I'd go with Apocalypse World. Just reskin it as needed.
>>52778576
gurps, just print it VERY small font to fit in 50 pages.

>Question:

>Do you include religious content in your games?
If the PCs aren't founding some sort of quasi-religious cult by session two, I'm disappointed.
>>52778383
>Do you include religious content in your games?
How could I *not*?
First forkindness:)supremacy.
How do you guys describe spells like spikes, cones, beams, blades etc etc of ice fire and lightning affecting enemies but not killing them? All I can think of is glancing hits but glancing hits of these kinds of things sound like they'd largely still fuck a guy over.
Not speaking on a specific setting or tabletop I just mean in general how do you do it?
Fire is easy, it leaves a burn. Ice you could have it freeze a chunk of flesh or impale the target like an arrow or spear would. Lightning could burn and/or partially paralyse.
Just think of the effect getting hit by electricity/extreme cold/extreme heat and scale it appropriately to how much damage they've taken from the hit.
>>52778157
Generally speaking I'll describe characters as having done something to negate the damage.
I mean, that's what a reflex save is, right? It's them trying to dodge or hold something up to mitigate the damage. Even if it's just an attack on their AC, AC still takes into account the fact that they're trying to not get hit. *Everybody* is dodging shit in a fight. A failure just means you didn't make it to adequate cover (maybe some of you is hanging out and got singed), or the piece of wood you shielded yourself with wasn't thick enough to entirely absorb it, or whatever.
Occasionally, if the bad guy is a badass, I'll just describe him as tanking it. Because that's tight as fuck.
>>52778617
>He doesn't play a fighter who religiously disbelieves in dodging
>1 int
>20 wis
>20 str

1 int is the lowest something can have without being considered "Mindless". As a result, they are LITERALLY not playable as characters due to not being sapient beings

Turtles
I haven't read many new books in the past decade or so, and I never got far from the forgotten realms D&D novels when it comes to fantasy. What are some good new (20 years old or less) fantasy novels? I don't care if they're modern or kinda sci-fi or not.
Don't mention:
-forgotten realms or other D&D
-40k
-harry potter
-song of fire and ice
-hunger games
There aren't any. Fantasy is a dying genre slowly cannibalizing itself on post-modern and meta-referential stylization when it isn't grasping at literary illusion and failing miserably.
>>52777008
Brandon Sanderson's epic high fantasy books, the Mistborn series and the Stormlight Archives series, are both very highly rated. They weren't for me personally, but they're all the rage at the moment.
I enjoyed The Red Knight by Miles Cameron, but the follow up books are a mixed bag. A lot of plot lines end really disappointingly, and the latest one was painful to finish because it was so bad.
Hey /tg/. I've been feeling bad about a call I made recently in a game that seems to have soured things a bit for the players. Want some feedback on how I might fix things.
>Party suspects local baroness is allied with the drow
>Shortly after they start investigating her, she falls ill and dies
>This throws them off the trail for a little while, but eventually some research and rumormongering reveals that women in the Baroness' family tend to often fall sick and die around 30.
>Eventually they discover that the Baroness, a powerful warlock with a patron aligned with the drow, has been bodysnatching her daughters for generations to stay immortal
>Expect the players to investigate these claims in some capacity: maybe try to find a confidant, or break into her manor to find evidence
>Instead, the players opt to attack the "Young" baroness with swords and magic in front of the assembled nobility during her coronation because they think it'll make her tip her hand and reveal to everyone she's a sorceress while defending herself.
>Guards intervene before that happens, players forced to explain why they just tried to murder a twelve year old girl
>"The baroness is an evil sorceress!"
>What evidence do you have of this?
>"A dark elf told us so!"
>Where's this dark elf?
>"We killed him but trust us he was totally legit"
>Players arrested and awaiting trial
The potentially bad call came when the bard asked if he could make a persuasion check to convince the guards he was telling the truth, and I told him the he absolutely could not try to make a persuasion check - the guards who just foiled his public assassination attempt have no interest in hearing him out. The party says I was too harsh in having the plan fail so spectacularly, especially since the baroness will have time to cover her tracks by the time the trial is underway, but I think their plan was horribly ill-conceived. Did I make a bad call?
>52774612
I've read this pasta before. You're still retarded, as are your players. Go home and make something better to troll for (you)s with.
>>52774655
>pasta
>(yous)
Nah. I posted it exactly once, last month in a "dumbest mistakes your players have made" thread when it was a recent event and I felt particularly vindicated about screwing the party over for it.
It's since ground the game to a halt and led to a lot of infighting, so I've started to really reconsider how justified I was in the whole ordeal and now I'm looking for feedback and discussion. Not everything is "bait" anon.
>>52774718
Well, sorry about your game and sorry about your players being shitters, but it doesn't actually look like you did anything wrong.

Insist they take point on all dungeon crawling.
>>52773581
>Can DMPCs be done right?
Very, very rarely. But I wouldn't attempt to do it myself. And the only "DMPC" I ever enjoyed playing with was literally an obstacle we got XP for circumventing, and was very clearly billed as such.
>And what's the best way of killing it?
Through the method that is most likely to cause a DM tantrum.
>>52773581
DMPCs are always a bad idea. Just ask the DM if they want to play instead for a while.
