What's a good rule of thumb for the amount of planets in a solar system?

Developing a hex map star chart for a space fantasy campaign I'm going to run, so I want to know how much I need to go into each system

Dude, it's fantasy. Who cares? Put as many as you want/need.
>>
>>52807159
I detest this way of thinking. It's lazy in the bad way and does away with any internal consistency.

All I want is a good idea of how many planets there should be per system.
>>
>>52807159

This. Put in whatever number you need.

Seriously though, we used to think we had a pretty good model for planetary systems; numbers, types, what kind of planet where, what types to expect, etc. Then we started detecting exoplanets and all our pretty little theories went right down the shitter. Just when we think we've got a handle on the problem, something even odder shows up. The whole science is in turmoil and the scientists are loving it.

Case in point: Two months ago they released the data from the Trappist system. There are SEVEN roughly Earth-sized planets orbiting that star and all of them are closer to their star than Mercury is to Sol.

Put however many planets you need and whatever kinds of planets you need. It's so wacky out there you may just be right!

I want to get into SW, and feel like buying a nice looking base rule book.

This one is all my local store has, and seems to cover general sci-fi and fantasy, but what about my favorite genre, cyberpunk? Is there a base rule book that covers that? Is this one plus a couple house rules enough, or would I need some expansion?

I made the first half of the starting zone for my next 5e campaign. After that I couldn't come up with any good content or encounters for the other half. And most importantly I don't know what the main story for this game will be. I'm starting small.

So id like to hear some interesting suggestions to throw in. I'll post what I had planned for what I already got, but please keep in mind I'm not married to any of these ideas and will happily replace them with something better.

But ide like to focus on a story that progresses in the background when the players inevitably stray away from it. And then the main conflict or antagonist eventually affects the players and the world around them. I got a tip about making a story that I liked. "picture the end of your story first and then find a interesting way to get to that conclusion." And I wanna use this method.

>picture the end of your story first and then find a interesting way to get to that conclusion

bad advice for RPGs. If you start with a conclusion you will invariably steer towards that conclusion. the fun of a collaborative storytelling medium is that the conclusion isn't certain.

You have no clue what your players will do.

But first Information from the players...

>dark skinned human barbarian of the uthgardt tribe. Was abandoned as a infant and adopted into the tribe soon after. Worked as a blacksmith and warrior for the tribe. Got exiled a while ago for reasons he won't go into. Over time will realize that he really just wants a family of his own.

>tiefling conman that tried ripping off a archdevil in disguise and was forced to do his bidding in exchange for not killing him on the spot. But he got warlock powers from it and he's testing their extent. Hired the barbarian as a bodyguard.

>goblin that retreated into the woods after his hunting parting got slaughtered by novice adventurers. Decided to commune with nature instead of returning to his squalid goblin life. Now he's a Druid and joined the party in hopes of getting revenge on those adventurers.

>Former human peasant dies in a massive attack on his village by evil dudes for evil reasons. A kind wizard finds the ruins and corpses, try's to resurrect every villager, only managed to resurect one soul along with fragments of all the other souls, body randomly reincarnated in the form of a black dragonborn. The reborn man vowes to avenge his people, spends the next year with the wizard adapting to his new body and training with weapons and armor. Takes up the title of paladin and sets out to find allies for his cause. Can't remember his previous life & hears occasional whispers in his head.

I am making a space opera setting. In it there's a parody of the Ancient Aliens guy, who goes up on interstellar TV and insists that like there's an ancient civilization of super advanced aliens that left behind all of their shit, the government knows all about it and all 'advances' are made by studying the equipment.

What are other stupid conspiracy theories a space civilization with super advanced technology might come up with?

Something about black holes being portals to other universes and/or viable methods of time travel, certainly, if you can just find a way past the event horizon.

The eventual death of all life in the Milky Way and Andromeda when the two galaxies collide (even though in truth this will be a relatively harmless event for both galaxies just due to how much empty space there is between star systems).

"Stardate 42961.2 was an inside job! Warp plasma can't melt duranium beams!"

"The ancient Alpha Phoenicians, who first developed FTL, were humans! WE WAZ MOFFS N SHIT!"

And of course various stories about abandoned or disused mines or stations that are haunted.

I see a lot of people shitting on Guards viability, but out of six games played so far I've only lost two, and they were both bottle tests first round games.

Taking a commissar makes this a non-issue - with so many bodies there's fuck all most other armies can do, even against Harlequins I've come out on top twice. It's a hard slog for them when they have four or five models to eight or nine++

Anyone else playing Guard and loving it? They're definitely not as underwhelming as in straight 40k.

It's even worse with Shadow War since it's only been out AND people are directly using the experiences with Necromunda.

Has anyone ever felt like making gnolls into something more than just fuzzy orcs? Giving them a full-fledged culture of their own and making them potential players on the world stage?

Because I've had this seed for a gnollish empire I want to develop for ages and I can't figure out where to go from here. I mean, I want to flesh out their pantheon, but I can't get my head around how to start doing so.
219 posts and 44 images submitted.
>>
Eating sentient beings, worshipping children because of a difficult and often deadly childbirth, matriarchal. Compared to the orcs, they're far less technological and more barbaric, outright in stone age.

There's a start I guess.
>>
>>52739258
I'm pretty sure they already do, but no wild pack of murderhobos has ever stopped to wonder about the culture of the things they're murdering.
>>
>>52739258
To expand upon that empire reference...

Gnolls reign over their own empire in the "not!Africa" region; a tropical and arid land of savannahs and open scrubland. Their "hat" is "Decadent But Dangerous Easterners"; their empire is built on a combination of martial skill, trade in luxuries (fine metal work, gems, drugs, black magic).

The gnolls worship a pantheon of "dark gods", somewhere between demon princes who've chilled out on the whole "destroy everything" rhetoric and lesser gods. Chief of the pack is Lamashtu, who fits the "Dark Mother" godly archetype - wicked and lusty chief goddess with powers over nature and fertility. The lesser gods in the pantheon are focused on roles such as war, various forms of hedonism (gluttony, carnality, drug-use, fine art, excess decoration), and magic.

Driving philosophy of the gnolls is hedonism: the purpose of life is to seek pleasure and indulge yourself. They lean strongly as a race towards Chaotic Neutral; self-centered, impulsive and lazy, but not inherently hostile towards other races as a matter of default. A typical gnoll wants to throw parties where she can lounge around on silk divans wearing shiny jewelry whilst eating and drinking herself into a stupor, not destroy cities and eat live babies.

Technically, gnolls are matriarchal, as the females are bigger and stronger than the males and claim this represents the nature/blessing of Lamashtu herself. In practice, the prevalance of necromantic talents amongst the males means that many males exert open political power, as the empire depends on them to run things.
