How do you tell one of your players that his girlfriend is no longer allowed to participate in your games without losing him too? The bitch is obviously not interested in the game since she's on her phone the whole time and is starting to become a distraction to the other players.

There's not one magic system but instead many different Traditions.

Each Tradition is associate with different Nouns and Verbs (that you have to buy as Merits.) Each Tradition also has specific Modifiers. Alchemy for instance takes a really long time (but you can also make potions so in practise Alchemy revolves around making potions.)

You can use Effects you have bought as Merits before hand or improvise Effects that cost twice as much Potency. The Potency of an Effect is how much the Effect costs as a Merit. Every Tradition used in an Effect gives the Effect some limiter based around the Potency such as requiring a Potency based skill check or a Mana cost based on Potency. You build Effects using a GURPS style ability building system. However, the Effect must fall under the domain of some Nouns and Verbs that you own and the Effect is modified by the Tradition Modifiers of the Traditions you took Nouns and Verbs from.

Hermetic magic for example has the Nouns of Demons, Angels and Undead and the Verbs of Sense, Summon, Command and Banish but costs mana and takes at least 1 minute of preparation.

The Assassin Arts tradition has the Nouns of Man, Beast and Demons and the Verbs of Destroy and Restore but requires an ability check and must work at touch distance.

My setting has multiple forms of magic, each with a different way of being utilized.

First Circle - Alchemical. Energy is extracted from natural raw materials and is placed in some sort of consumable which is then ingested to gain the effect. This is how your typical Potion of X comes about.

Second Circle - Arcane. By tapping into the Leylines that envelop the world, one is able to create overt effects that are clearly supernatural. However, channeling arcane energy isn't easy, and doing too much of it in too short of a time could cause serious side effects.

Third Circle - Divine. Similar to Arcana, but instead of tapping Leylines you recieve energy from your deity. The energy is more "refined" which allows you to channel more of it, but you simply cannot cast any spells that your god would oppose. A priest of Capitalism could not use magic with the purpose of being charitable, for instance.

Fourth Circle - Thaumic. One can harness the energy from one's own soul to various effect. Continued practice with a particular spell refines the ability, and can make it take less energy from you, and so Thaumic casters have more narrow but reliable abilities most of the time.

Fifth Circle - Artifice. It's something of a subcategory of other circles, representing the placement of energy into a permanent item.

Sixth Circle - Void. Magic that is cast with "null energy" granted to an individual by a Void Lord. Depending upon what Lord a person has contracted with, the individual has access to an extremely limited set of abilities that fit the persona of their Lord. These narrow spell lists cannot be changed, but they can be cast infinitely (for the most part) and the contract grants some passive abilities

I'm working on a setting with ritualistic magic right now.

All magic is learned, there's no such thing as inborn magical talent. It's poorly understood, and surrounded by superstition. Think of your typical soothsayer, or deranged cultist, or voodoo magician, but its actually real.

There are different magical traditions, some more trusted than others, but all magic has some kind of a cost, and generally the more powerful the magic, the greater the cost. There are no spell charges, and no mana, the only limitation is if you can pay the cost of casting.

I'm still looking for a system that can support this kind of thing if you have any suggestions (apart from GURPs, I'm not really looking for simulationism).

You can't take Sylvaneth Wyldwoods as part of your army. You can create them with whatever abilities, but you can't take them like units.

They are also 0 points if you have the Sylvaneth Allegiance, so there is no need for you keep aside any reserve points for them.

I tend to like playing the middle ages best, but I like the early ages factions the most. I am also objectively shit at the inner workings of the game so I'm probably missing a lot of stuff.

I do love building a middle Age Ulm pretender who just sits around crafting magic items so I have flying heavy knights with giant fuckoff axes to split entire castles in half.

I'm looking for a RPG system to spend my hard earned money on. I have a few hundred dollars to go.
I know the "What's the best system" is controversy bait, but I kinda wanna see we can reach a consensus. That system is of course, not DnD 5e (which I own) since combat has absolutely no depth. It's not DnD 4e (I also own) since it's way too slow, (and it has perhaps TOO much depth) and at that point why don't you play an actual minis game. It's not 3.5 (I played a lot) because of balance is nonexistant and books are kinda rare to find here.
What options are left? How is Pathfinder in regards to depth vs fluidity vs balance?

GURPS, you dont even need to spend your hard earned money to start, you can start with GURPS lite for free and then move on to the basic set uf you like it. GURPS lite is a great place to start with too as it doesnt overwhelm a new GM withe the massive amount of content that the basic set offers. If you like it buy some physical books and then get any other pdfs you need from the GURPS general mega.

Eight dog Lucius? Anyone ever run it? Is it viable for many scheme/strat combos? What other models would you take?

I kinda want to pick him up and try this out. I feel like it would be annoying and interesting. Eight hounds spaced within 5 of each other spreads out across the entire board, allowing you to drop a lot of scheme markers. I was also considering taking a Trapper with two changelings to have a makeshift gunline...and with Lucius commanding that means possibly upwards of 5 focused sniper shots per turn. I would probably round it out with a Graves to kinda bodyguard Lucius/eat Devil's Deals.

Any input on running Lucius as Neverborn is appreciated.

I don't see it working fantastically - even if it's good for a Claim Jump/Leave Your Mark/Covert Breakthrough pool, the last scheme is going to be a freebie to your enemy (since it will be an interact or kill scheme), and the strategy is a total toss-up.

The Watch My Back(?) upgrade to let eeeverything Accomplice (Companion?) might work too to get the interacts in.

I only heard recently that the Changelings can copy Focus'd shots when it comes up.

I mean you will have a lot of activations but a side from that I don't think you will have much else going for you. The dogs put out meh damage and are pretty easy to wipe off the board. Also the lose a lot of value if you go to wide a lose a few of them. But I think in table quarters Strat and some schemes it would be okay. If you take a dopple you could so some plays. I don't know really need to know what you would run for you other 27 stones after 8 dogs and Graves. Sounds like it could work but it would be so situational as to make it pointless. Even more so since nothing you said there can 100% make the TN 12 horror duel from Lucius.

I don't really get your meaning...if I focus them with Take Aim and then they copy the Trapper's shot they can just spend their focus like normal and it will apply to the shot...right? Changelings are pretty nasty though for 4 stones, that is for sure.

Point taken. Although nothing can really pass Commanding Presence's duel "for sure"...I would only ever use it if I could guarantee it desu, and that's in any list. I am talking more about Issue Command.

So any other input on Lucius as NB? What models do get me a lot of value? Just Doppel/Nekima type stuff? That seems boring. I am not trying to win tournaments here, just shake up my club games with some fun/weird shit.
