Rare armies edition
Flock of Stormbirds subedition

DarkMech, EC and SoH degenerated into infighting, Custodians decided to walk and fluff power levels were determined by gibberish. Magi decided to hide no longer while Militia join Istvaan Loyalists in the underappreciated club as WB lore went blurry for a while. A very pretty Stormbird carried matte coats for the 1KSons but the Mech are a better choice than Chaos. All this and more in the last thread: >>53130736

Any love for Militia/Cults out there?

Nearly got my WB list down now, I think. Core is 20 Ashen Circle and 10 GV in two units of each, geared to the nines.

I was planning on sticking in a Lightning to crack Spartans open, so the Mortis might be a really good idea for AA and light AT, thanks. Rest of the list isn't set yet, but plan was Layak for AC troops, Mandatory Chaplain with Jump Pack to lead one of the Gal Vorbak deepstrike squads and for Daemon allies one of each herald with 20 Bloodletters, 20 Daemonettes, some Beasts of Nurgle to run cover for the Ashen Circle and some Screamers respectively. A kind of mini Infernal Tetrad, given I can get Cursed Earth on Layak guaranteed to buff them. Was planning to have a Damocles Command Rhino as HQ #3 since a massive portion of my army can deepstrike in and the extra Orbital Strike would be handy. Was thinking I should find a squad to stick in there, maybe just 5 plasmaguns if I have a spare 200pts.

Not sure what to do when Lorgar wants to come along, since I have to give up Ashen Circle troops then. Tacticals seem dull with so many daemons covering the front line part. Helps?

Sometime in the future I want to run a game with the premise being night is deadly to the common folk. There's no evil necromancer or demon causing this, that's just the way it's always been. Night monsters (they need a proper name, ghasts maybe?) cannot pass boundaries defined by sentient beings - walls, fences etc. - but are free to pass through any portal such a door, gate or even window (if it opens) unless marked by a simple sigil drawn out in blessed chalk. Chalk is not expensive and even a low ranking priest can bless it, but if someone were to wipe off the mark or a window is left open the household may well be doomed.

This has been the way for generations now and people have learned to live with it, extra care is taken and some families have learned to grow small crops indoors. However, there are rumours that northern towns are suffering a fog descending during the day which allows the night monsters to roam free. No-one can work for fear of being attacked and escape is even more difficult. While vision is limited at night, the swift or lucky may evade the danger, particularly if they can find or make a place to hide. In the fog, you can't see the danger until it's right in front of you.

As you can see, there's a premise there but there is also a lot missing so I was wondering if anyone could help me with this, even asking questions about it would help as things you may ask might have slipped my mind.

Why do they grow food indoors?
>>
>>53149677
A number of reasons really.

It's a lot easier to secure a house with solid walls than a fenced field which is much more exposed to the elements so while outdoors crops are still maintained, because doing otherwise would be silly, it can be prudent to keep a small stockpile growing somewhere safer in case a field is compromised and ruined.

Obviously these are limited to things like mushrooms and small tubers but even a small amount of food can help when stocks are low. Communities with links to underground-dwelling folk can flourish in this regard, having access to higher quality crops and farming methods. They may even be able to trade for some section of underground space dedicated to such a purpose, but this comes with its own set of problems.
>>
>>53149199
Nice imagery, very evocative.
Your next challenge is to define what the players will do in your campaign.
Is there any way to face the monsters outside of hiding? If not, then your game is going to stagnate really quickly. If so, define it.
Is there a way to alter this seemingly immutable balance? A monster king to bargain with? A hive queen to slay? Define it.
What is the player group supposed to look like? WFRP peasants? Nobles and novice priests? Technomancers? Space Marines?

Mythras Cover Small.jpg

Running a Mythras campaign, and I need details for a setting, so I figured I'd pitch my setting and engage in the time honored tradition of tossing ideas around to see what sticks:

After the Eldritch Cataclysm Tyrant Horrors rise out of the abyss and sow madness across the land. Humanity is divided into factions of power struggling to survive while these horrors play games with them like a bunch of children who've found an ant hive. They are unknowable and unseen, but their presence is felt everywhere. Besides that, other terrors have risen across the land: monsters and colossal reality-warping behemoths that mindlessly ravage the land.

Sapient races have survived by harvesting the destruction of these behemoths as magic. The remains of their destruction leave the land warped and tainted, and resources harvested from these areas can be used to create magic and magic users alike. Wars are fought over these areas. The behemoths are thus the driving force behind change in the world. Kingdoms rise and fall by their hand.

Additionally, Pre-cataclysm tech is quite rare and powerful. Nations may form around these relics.

TLDR: Eldritch Apocalypse where civilization has been blasted back to the gothic horror stone age, behemoths roam the land warping reality and causing magic, Nations struggle for survival by hoarding magic and ancient tech.

Going for more Nobledark rather than straight grim. Sapients survive by being tactical and clever, and some have even managed to destroy the Behemoths, but one wrong move and it turns into a bloodbath.

>Is it too long, or too generic grimdark

It isn't long. It is general premise of world. Actually it doesn't tell anything about the civilizations at all. Also don't get me wrong. Nothing wrong with that. No reason to go into extensive world-building but you should think about the general area where players will be playing, and surrounding areas, and give it the general premise as you did with overall world.

Is it grimdark? It depends about the approach? Scavengers. Fighting for bare necessities. Grimdark.

Bringing hope, progress? Band of Brothers? Noblebright.

Good shit. I got three ideas. Pick what you're missing, I'm cool with any of them.

#1: The Eternal Judge, The Black God
>Celestial
>Death, Magic, Wisdom, Order
>The Moon, Justice
He wears a cloak. The priests say it is deepest black, and perhaps they are correct, but his prophets (few and far between) say that his cloak is an ever-shifting rainbow. Pigeons carry the ghosts of the dead to him, and he judges them fairly before sending them to their appointed afterlife...or, if they choose, to live again and do good.

#2: The Scholar, The First-Mage
>Aetherial
>Magic, Wisdom
>The Moon, Prophecy, Craft
In one sense, he has no temples; in another, every place of learning is a shrine to him. He seeks to better everyone, giving them magic and wisdom to elevate them from brute animal strength. He challenges everyone, whether they worship him or not, to outsmart him, and he is never more pleased than when they succeed.

#3: Luin, the All-Skilled
>Terrestrial
>Hunting, Cunning, Creativity, Crafts, Entertainment, Prophecy
"And when Luin came to them, the chief of the clan said to him: what can you do that we cannot? Luin said that he could hunt, but the chief showed him the greatest hunters of the land at his call. Luin said that he could make music, but the chief showed him the most beautiful of musicians. Luin said that he was skilled at the forge, but the chief showed him his blade, forged by a smith there, the sharpest and keenest. Then Luin said, you may have men who can do what I do, but tell me, do you have any who can do all those things? Then the chief was amazed, and welcomed Luin to his hold."

Why are X-Wings slower than TIE Fighters (the original TIE Fighter) in X-Wing miniatures? I was under the impression from all the video games and books that the X-Wing was faster (granted, they usually had to take power from shields and/or guns to do it), but that the TIE could accelerate better with much better agility.

Maybe I'm misremembering, but I cannot think of any books or games in which the TIE Fighter was faster.

>Is GURPS a good system to introduce people to if they are new to roleplaying games?

I hope so. Our group has played a tiny bit of Pathfinder and a couple sessions of Deadlands Classic, so they're fairly new. But I'm interested in GURPS and am trying to read up on it now to run a game for them once I figure out the genre/setting I want to run
>>
Yes, BUT it is a horrible system for entirely new groups (i.e. new players but also new GM).

GURPS can be super simple and newbie-friendly IF GMs know what they are doing and put in the effort to make (or steal) appropriate templates and set up a list of what rules are in effect. A fresh-faced GM isn't necessarily going to anticipate this, and equally-fresh-faced players won't have the RPG experience to roll with the punches, so to speak, and help the GM when he stumbles.

I'd also use Action for most first-timers.

Well, time to fire up them dice rollers, boy.

1) The longsword was used in war
a: Neither the English, the French, or the Germans ever used long swords in battle. The longswords and broadswords were only carried by high nobility and their bodyguards. They were incredibly shitty weapons.

2) Banded Mail was a thing
b: Banded mail left you vulnerable by stabbing through the bands and up towards the chest.

3) Knights used two handed Hammers, Swords and Axes.
c: Outside of polearms, spears, halberds and the like, armies rarely ever used two handed melee weapons.
4) You can use polearms in melee combat.
d: Even awkwardly gripping a polearm by the haft, polearms are extremely awkward to use outside of rank and file combat. After the initial charge, people would often drop their polearm weapon and draw another.
5) Dual Wielding is a thing.
I don't so much hate this one for its style so much as it is teaching kids to fight like ninnies. Dual Wielding is much less effective than fighting with a shield.
216 posts and 32 images submitted.
>>
>>53131675
longswords and broadswords were basically blunt weapons, nobles rarely if ever performed routine maintenance on their swords because they were hardly ever expected to see battle.

Many of them were never sharpened at all past the initial forging process, they simply sat in their sheath for years on end, only brought out when training and dueling.

Nobility would rather surrender at the end of a fight and be taking captive and held for ransom than they would take their chances fighting after their rear guard had fallen.
>>
Fighting with sword and shield is a form of dual-wielding, dipshit.

Also, confirmed for never having seen a pollax, if you think polearms are too long to use in single combat.
