[ G U A R D I A N S P I R I T ]

What sorts of things could have realistically been invented much earlier than they actually were?

For example velcro could have been created in the stone age (though it wouldn't be nearly as good without synthetic fibers), and the floating arm trebuchet can be built with medieval technology but was not invented until the late 1990s.

Particularly interested in things that could've been invented in early medieval Europe (circa 600 AD) because I'm running a campaign set in a similar time period and think it would be cool for the players to discover that the ancients invented velcro.

Oh cool I'm not the only one who thinks about this. I would say that gunpowder could have come about earlier than it did. Guns would still trail behind a fair bit due to the need for more reliable metallurgy for barrels but large cast iron cannons probably could have come about earlier due to the strength from their bulk.

I wish I had something more meaningful to add because I'm very interested in exploring alternate histories for the purposes of game design. Though I'm interested in later periods, around the industrial revolution, and how things may have developed sooner or later than they did for us.

Parallel time. Parallel Worlds. Of course, time and displacement between infinite possibilities would intersect more than I would ever imagine. I appeared in Metropolis. I immediately had no shortage of supervillains to defeat, along with an amazingly belligerent Lobo to contend with. Naturally, Hyde was part of this equation, too. No rest for the weary. No rest for the Destroyer.

Then, I heard some news. Of Gotham City's bat-clad hero…and three other vigilantes seen with him. Robin. Sparrow. Bluebird. Familiar names. Names that would eventually become my own distant history. Or already are.

I don't know what time will do if we ever interact - I certainly don't remember anything like it, and I don't what to know what will happen if I do. But this is one half of Hyde's original world, too. That's why I had to track him down. To stop him.

I never did learn of what turned Matthew into Smile. What horrifying revelation broke him into an inhuman monster. And I learned it too little, too late. Hyde hunted down Matthew, his past self. Broke and shaped him into what he was, despite my efforts to try and stop things from the shadows. Because if I broke the loop, what would happen? The paradox of this 'dual-jump', an unforeseen consequence of my chain, is what created my greatest enemy.

Was this the world fighting back, or was this just cruel predestination? I don't know. I don't know enough about time to unravel its mysteries. I almost wish I took the Eye with me on the way out of the last world.

Finally got around to reading the 39 page Tomb Kings jump. Some issues I found.
>Origins
So the Prince and Priest Backgrounds are 100 CP, and the Golem also. The Priest comes with the extra Magic, and the Golem with the Body Budget, but not seeing the Prince. The ones that are free should say free or 0 CP.

>Undead Traits- Free and Mandatory For All
This invalidates the point of Drop Ins, and should not be mandatory if they want to arrive as whatever they were last jump.

>Scarab King-300
Has a lot of thematic crossover with
>Tomb Swarm
In the Golem Items Section and
>Tomb Swarms
In the Tomb section. I would make the Tomb Swarm discounted to Scarab Kings, or free for a Scarab King who is also a Golem, and give Scarab Kings with a Tomb the Tomb Swarms upgrade for free.

>Golem
Has some issues, like only having half the Perks of other Origins, and the perks are more about the body than about you, The Origin mentions being a Famous Warrior, but the perks are bland and could apply to anyone with a golem body. This needs to be a Bonus Origin, where paying an extra 100 CP makes you a Golem (Prince/Priest/Herald/Necrotect) with the Golem stuff and discounts added on.

>Conduit- 600
>As a conduit, you will not benefit yourself, but you will greatly empower the magics of all friendly magic users within a good distance around your own body.
This feels wrong. If the power flows through him into the surroundings, the golem IS in the area of effect. If it can cast magic, the magic should be enhanced as well as anyone elses.

>Golem Form
So, no human sized Golems are offered, all are huge. Is there a human skeleton in there the golem is built around them necessitates it being so big?

Thursday Xianxia general /txg/

This thread is to talk about xianxia (and related genres) RPGs, novels, and comics. Elements of xianxia stories are very relevant to role playing games, especially cultivation rankings and settings.

>What is xianxia?
"Xianxia (仙侠 xiānxiá) – literally means “Immortal Heroes”. Fictional stories featuring magic, demons, ghosts, immortals, and a great deal of Chinese folklore/mythology. Protagonists (usually) attempt to cultivate to Immortality, seeking eternal life and the pinnacle of strength. Heavily inspired by Daoism."

>List of xianxia terms:
https://immortalmountain.wordpress.com/glossary/wuxia-xianxia-xuanhuan-terms/

>Where to find out more about specific xianxia web novels:
http://www.novelupdates.com/

>Where to read xianxia:
http://www.wuxiaworld.com/

>Why should you read xianxia?
These stories are literally role-playing game campaigns. The MCs are usually murderhobos, who only care about leveling up and finding better gear. If you want to see CN characters traveling through stellar settings, using martial arts and cultivation techniques (weaboo magic), fight and kill each other over pride, and encounter dangerous dungeons and monsters, then these are the stories to read.
>Thread agenda
For those who've read xianxia already, make a list of all the xianxia you have completed/currently reading. Then list them with these categories: god tier, great tier, good tier, ok tier, meh tier, and shit tier. I will compile everyone's suggestions to make a recommendation list for new readers.

For those new to this genre, ask any questions you need answered.

Desolate Era, I Shall Seal the Heavens, Stellar Transformations, Coiling Dragon
>Great Tier

>Douluo Dalu
Kidding me? Desolate Era, Stellar Transformations, and Douluo Dalu are all shit tier man.
I Shall Seal the Heavens and Coiling Dragon are both rad, though.

Grandmaster Strategist is pretty good, despite being Wuxia at the highest. Gate of Revelation and Terror Infinity are both kinda cool too, though not really Xianxia or Wuxia.

Because player, by default, are stupid.
Trust, since I managed to shed my mantle of long time GM and was able to play most of the time, I noticed that I rarely have good ideas - it gets especially bad if it's getting pretty late

Don't look for a reason, I could probably rattle of a long list of stuff, but it will help much.
Players are stupid and there's not much you can do about it

No plan ever survives contact with the enemy.

"I remember being told I'd passed the tests."

"Generally speaking, only idiots and people who had lost family tried to get into the mecha brigades. I fell into the latter- my family went up in flames along with Houston the day North Korea and China decided they wanted to rule the world."

"I'm not an idiot. If someone manages to kill the man who flew the plane that dropped the bombs, or the man who ordered the strike, it won't be me. That just means I'm going to kill a lot more of their soldiers to compensate."

"I don't have hair anymore on my head. Eyebrows, yeah. Stubble, still there. But my was shaved and Naired so that the helmet could interface better."

"The mecha I pilot is a four-legged monster they call the Tarantula. Other mechas have 'hands' that can interface with swappable weapons or be used for lifting. I have guns for arms on either side- belt-fed light-armor piercing liquid-cooled gatlings, with an 20mm autocannon that can fire high explosive or armor-piercing rounds."

"On my left shoulder is a Short-range six-shot missile launcher, on the right, an emp-grenade launcher. They may get swapped for artillery weapons or additional autocannons."

"It is not a subtle weapon. I am not a subtle man. It's a good match."

"But how did I earn that honor? How do they trust someone with that much firepower, to know when the time comes, he will pull the trigger?"

"Really simple."

"I was infantry. No power armor, no heavy weapons, just a rifle and a flak-vest. I was told to dispose of a group of soldiers we'd taken prisoner. We had hostiles incoming, and after the fifth broadcast execution of non-combat personnel the enemy had shown us, we weren't feeling merciful."

"The intent was to take a pistol and shoot them all once in the head and leave it at that. Of course, I wasn't given specific methods for disposal."

"I had a few other guys help me strip them naked, pose them on barbed wire, douse them with fuel leaking from one of their trucks, and lit 'em up just as the hostiles started coming."

"Fun thing about google translate- it's great for looking up insults. The North Korean infantry got to see their comrades burning and screaming, arranged to spell '엿 먹어라'."

"Or, for those uninitiated into Korean language, fuck you."

"They went fucking nuts. No order, no reason to their attack. We picked them off with no casualties on our side."

"During my court-martial for what I referred to as a Korean BBQ, it was asserted I was a loyal soldier, but a sick fucking bastard."

"In any other war I would have been executed. Instead, they decided to pull me in an assault mech and send me to the front lines. I later found out they had let it slip to the enemy that I had been promoted for my little impromptu cookout."

"I'm the devil to two nations, now. That's fine with me."

"Because I swore on my hometown's glowing ashes that there would be hell to pay."

I've been thinking about this for some amount of time, and I've decided to ask /tg/ for their opinion on this scenario.

> A horde of 2,000 fanatically devoted, cultist zealots armed with short spears, short-swords, and bucklers is going into battle with an army of 2,000 trained soldiers armed with short spears, short-swords, and bucklers in a wide-open plain. Assume that both sides are on-foot, and armored with layers of cloth.

> The fanatical zealots believe that their deity has commanded them to destroy the kingdom at all costs, and genuinely believe that there is no higher honor than to kill the enemies of their deity and die a glorious death in his name. The fanatical zealots have two months of training with their weapons, and a lifetime of intensive brainwashing.

> The trained soldiers are defending their kingdom because they've been drafted to defend the kingdom and will be receiving a hefty stipend upon retirement, otherwise, they have no motivation to fight. The trained soldiers have two years of training with their weapons, and have undertaken several campaigns, though not against the fanatical zealots.

> Both forces meet in a wide-open field at high noon, who wins?

Which is more important in a medieval battle, fanatical hatred of the enemy, or training with weapons?
25 posts and 7 images submitted.
>>
Training. The zealots might win the battle if they allowed the trained soldiers to retreat once their morale broke, but as it became clear that the zelots would not rest until every soldier is killed, they would have to finish the fight to to the man.
>>
>>53189493
Well, there are two main questions here in my opinion. Have the fanatical zealots faced open combat before? And the same for the soldiers. I would argue the more battle hardened side is going to win, because zealotry doesn't tend to hold very long in these situations.
>>
>>53189557

Let's say both sides have experienced open combat before, but the zealots have roughly a third of the soldier's experience.

Does anyone else feel as though D&D has gotten too easy since WotC got a hold of it?

Between everyone having too much health, spells allowing mages to bypass huge swathes of the rules at no penalty, skill rolls obfuscating complex actions into binary outcomes, and online resources allowing one to learn the most optimum means of "winning the game," how exactly does anyone in the hobby feel challenged anymore?
>inb4 "you don't WIN in an RPG
Then why is it called a "Role-Playing Game" as opposed to "Role-Play" or "Free Form" or something? Why even have things like HP, AC, Levels, etc. if the goal isn't to manage these resources to "win" an encounter? Why are so many people so caustic when it comes to referencing the rules that they've decided to base their entire game around?

Get a better DM that can pose you an actual challenge.

Or stop fucking minmaxing and try and make a fun build for a change that doesn't revolve around killing X Monsters as fast as possible.

Either works, really.
>>
>>53188292
>Get a better DM that can pose you an actual challenge.
Literally impossible in a mixed party.
>Or stop fucking minmaxing and try and make a fun build for a change that doesn't revolve around killing X Monsters as fast as possible.
Literally impossible when the game assumes that everyone is min-maxed and people read into how to get better at the game.

Every time someone poses a question like this I get really confused.
I mean...it's D&D. Literally ANYTHING can be changed in the adventure. Even if every single asshole at the table from GM to newest PC is an Expert Rule Lawyer hellbent on taking to the letter every single word in the manual, if there's too many HP, what's stopping the GM from spawning enemies with better gear?
If mages have too many hax spells, what's stopping the GM from bringing in things that force them to choose between taking the easy way out now, and keeping their daily spells for later danger?
If single skill rolls are too determinant, what's stopping the DM from making a single action into multiple rolls over different skills depending on what part of the objective you're doing?
If the PCs are minmaxing with munchkin builds off the net, what's stopping the GM from scaling the challenge to the characters?

It's D&D
The only limit is your imagination EVEN while you follow the rules
You just have (or are) a shitty GM

Uh, by making it something other than a pit full of sand?

you could have an arena with artificial hills or ponds or any manner of other terrain difficulties and natural hazards. Historically gladiatorial games often took on a theatrical element, so you could have the arena set up for battle reenactments or what have you. you could put traps and stuff too.
