I am currently preparing for DMing a campaign where the players will be moving up a magical tower in order to gain supernatural powers.
Lots of dungeon crawling will be involved in the process, and I am aiming to make every level as unique as possible.
Things ranging from classical dungeons to more open environments is what I think of, with many levels having an own pallette of natural resources useful and necessary for progressing further.
Additionally, between the levels are outer areas inhabited by humans and other adventurers, who have mostly their own designated paths on which they explore the levels.
Antique to Renaissance tech level is what i had in mind.
any ideas you can give me regarding thematic and obstacles? go crazy
come on, guys.
>>53301993
You just described an open world accessed through magical gateways at each tower level.
You could go "kitchen sink" and it would work dude.
>>53302814
You have just as much of a clue as i have, do you?
"open world" within the insides of the tower only as much as maybe hunting ground maps in monster hunter

Personal Opinion: I've found that 5th Edition's combat lacks a lot of the weight and depth (and thus fun value) that the previous editions had.
3.5 and its unofficial successor Pathfinder had been and still are criticized for devolving into full-attack spam, but Bo9S and Path of War give martials interesting and powerful options in and out of combat.
4e had a very good combat system that was well balanced, however it was also criticized for relying too much on a combat grid/miniatures, and that it was too abstracted and 'gamey' or that it felt like an MMO.
So here's my question: How do you feel about 5e's combat? What do you like? What are your complaints? How do you feel it can be improved?
From prev. thread, about to first time GM
The plan so far (going to play on Roll20):
>sort of a 5 Room Dungeon
>villagers complain about goblins/lizardfolk/haven't decided yet snatching their sheep and cattle, pitchfork militia and even a few lowly adventurers went to track the stolen animals, haven't returned
>party (starting at 5th level) arrives at a cave w/stalagmites where they fight off the guardians, proceed to find that the cave transitions into a man-made dungeon, entrance is sealed
>booming voice introduces himself as the dragon who is about to run them through a trial of wits
>puzzle gauntlet ensues, haven't thought of good puzzles yet, ideas:
>a sealed door with a human figure carved on it, in the center of the room floats a sundial with a magical light resembling the sun, four pressure plates in the room (you could probably guess what this one's about)
>a match-the-mirror puzzle with torches and shadows (realized through fog of war), gotta match the shadows with how they are in the reflection
>possibly something involving magical silence and communication in gestures?
>last trial is just the dragon asking them a really simple kid's riddle
Next is the boss, should be some monstrosity/beast, released from a cage by the dragon's minions (lizardfolk? kobolds?)
Last room is the players finding out the dragon is actually a dragon cub whose mom left somewhere and didn't come back, so the minions stole food for him. He likes it when people come to play. Most are so dull they die to the guardians, though, or starve in the puzzle rooms - the ones that his mother ordered to be made, not the last one. The last one he "made" himself, and is pretty proud of it. Shame no one before lived long enough to go through it.
This is probably terribly uninspired, but I'm really pressed for time. Would like some advice on what monsters to put in the encounters to make it work for 4 5th-level adventurers and take longer than 3 minutes, maybe ideas for other puzzles as well.

Hello! I need some help with an upcoming event. The Tournament of Heroes is held in the capital city every 5 years, and allows adventurers from all over the world to compete against one another for fame and rewards galore.
Basically it's a huge battle tournament held in a colosseum. That part I've sussed. What I want is some ideas about arena types, as there are mages/wizards/etc who shape the field each new battle, so as to provide no two spectacles exactly the same. There's some obvious ones like light forests, lakes, rocks etc, but what do you reckon, 5eg? How do I make compelling arenas with things that affect the combat? Basically, help me Pokemon Battle Arena this shit!

With 7th ed drawing to a close, I'd like to take a look at what needs buffing desperately.
To that end: What are the absolute worst units in the game currently? I'm not talking 'they're sub-optimal, but you CAN throw them in', I'm talking 'the absolute worst crap, completely outclassed by everything else in the ____ codex, and you're wasting points and giving your opponent free VPs for running them'?
So far, I have:
Tyranid Pyrovores
Dark Eldar Hellions
Dark Eldar Wyches
Space Marine Assault Centurions
CSM Mutilators
Necron C'tan shards
Craftworld Eldar Storm Guardians
Astra Militarum Rough Riders
CSM: Chosen
Orks: Everything
Eldar: Everything needs nerf
IG: Leman Russ
Necron:?
...
Tau: Squat faction
>>53300806
I'm talking specific units in each faction.
Obviously, a squad of DE hellions are going to slap the shit out of most things orky, but they're still a horrendous waste of points.
pyrovores might do some nasty shit to dark eldar, but they're still horrendous, over-priced units with horrid drawbacks.
etc.

Recently, me and my local group have been discussing the idea of playing a campaign based around the Persona series.
How would we go about this? Are there any rules systems, homebrew or not, that would best fit for such a game? What kind of style and mood should such a game have?

>>53298025
depends on which game you wanna base it on. If you are doing 5, then just listen to the battle theme. That should give you all the information on tone you will ever need.
For a system, I'd suggest a somewhat recent one called kamigakari, with a few key changes for balance. I think the thread that is currently up has those listed by one anon.
>>53298025
If you don't mind using the Storyteller System from oWoD, a friend of mine cobbled together a Persona fangame with it. It mixed the fluff for some retarded reason, but you should be able to just ignore that and run things without regard to all the crossover stuff.
I'm pretty sure he's asleep right now, but assuming the thread doesn't get archived then I can message him about it and share the stuff here once he gets back to me. He should be fine with it since our group isn't really putting it to use and likely won't for a while (if we ever do at all).

Post myths and truths
Myth: Races and classes
Truth: Races are classes
>>53292140
On a practical level that is true, especially with the type of players I've suffered through recently. You You CAN pick a race just for flavor, but it's not fucking likely. You pick it because it has tangible mechanical benefits to the class you wanted to be.
Truth: OP sucks cocks
I kinda like the idea of race=classAs long as you have enough wiggle room to not make every race=class the same
> keep thinking about making a lewd RPG
> keeps clouding my work on legit projects
> decide to make said lewd RPG to get it out of my system
> work a few drafts
> cant'd decided between several factors and fetishes
> rework said drafts till I'm effectively on draft 7 or 8; many versions are total ground-up restarts
> can't hurt to make a thread about it
I'll try to head off some questions before I post the topics of discussion to avoid derailment
> Why?
Because. Additionally, I'm hoping that working out at least one full version will get it off my mind and let me focus on other, more legitimate projects.
> What's your fetish?
Lots; including but not limited to basically any fetish that makes women physically powerful (super strength, muscles, height, monster girls, etc.), along with futa, book-worms, hair, and glasses. I strongly believe in variety being the spice of life, but if I had to pick a top-5 it's probably be chosen out of those.
> What are you, a faggot?
Probably about 5% Homo, 95% Hetero.
> What would you even do in the game?
Honestly, it could play out like a totally normal RPG, but he rules and options for fucking would be readily available. In most editions, one's sexual traits would also have effects on their initial statistics.
> What system?
Many versions work off of a modified d20 system, simply because most everyone knows it and I'm not writing a whole new set of mechanics for this. A couple of versions have been based on nWoD and Barbarians of Lemuria as well.
Now, following this post I'm going to paste some of the points of contention and let people comment as they see fit.
>>53289879
so, points of contention:
> Gotta include some fetishes that don't appeal to me.
Other people may at some point give this a once-over if it's ever finished, but at the same time a lot of my fetishes would contradict or prevent some other fetishes, so on one hand I'm trying to not rule out anyone I don't have to, but a lot of it wears down my enthusiasm to have to stat this unappealing shit out. I mean, at the end of the day this is a pet project that I'm sure nobody's ever gonig to actually run, but at the same time I can't help but feel a little selfish.
> Could just make it about my fetishes
I'd be happy, but this would greatly limit the kinds of characters you could make, and even the stories that could be told.
> I'm probably about 59% a furry.
No suit, no fursona, no OCs, but I'll be damned if I don't find some of the higher-quality art arousing. A discerning furry, if you will. I, of course, want to include this shit; at times I've even geared a version or two around being a predominantly furry game, where players play as animal people; like actually making the game people accuse Iron Claw of being. Really can't fully commit to this because A: Furry shit will turn away a lot of people automatically, and B: I'm not exclusively furry.
> It's rape-enabling
I've got rules for fucking, initiating a good dicking, and fondling people, and the mechanical consequences there of, so obviously this means any sort of neckbeard who'd actually run this game would be fully capable of committing rape; and not just fade-to-black rape, but full tilt, F.A.T.A.L., "he takes 1d3+1 damage from your dick," Rape, with a capital R. On one end I'm not responsible for what other people run with the game I built, and a lot of the mechanics are mandatory for the sort of game I'm envisioning, but on the other I know what kid of people are out there.
> I like randomized characters
A lot of people don't.
>>53289879
Nah, you are a faggot.
>>53289879
As someone who has done a lot of ERP, having rules for sex is the dumbest shit.
No dice should be rolled during a sex scene. Ever. There is no greater boner killer than that.
If you're really building a system around the idea of ERP, then you need to consider how to make sex interesting from a storytelling perspective, before and afterwards.
Whether this is something abstract or something that actually exists in setting is up to you, there's room for both. 'Mages need cum/sexual pleasure to recharge their magic' is something I've seen before, or making the idea of sexual domination something with real metaphysical power. Two people sharing a loving or affectionate experience can enhance one another, one person dominating another can drain their power for themselves, etc etc.
If you don't want to get into all that, even simple things like making a post-fuck roll to get a nice buff based on the afterglow would give it some useful place in the game without cluttering up the fucking with numbers.
>setting has an ancient giant lighthouse on a lonely island which serves as mage HQ
>this dude in my group: "I'm from there"
>"oh you wanna be a mage?"
>"nah, I'm a fighter, but I'm from there"
>next campaign setting has a floating city in the ocean
>dude: "I'm from there"
>short side campaign has a town built on the top of an enormous pyramid
>"I'm from there"

Why hasn't anyone yet tried to break into Slaanesh's palace?
I think it'd be a great story for someone to have passed all the trials of self-restraint, blindfolded themselves in the palace, and then to demand one thing of the prince of pleasure: to hold his/her hand.
>>53282132
>to hold his/her hand.
