What is a way in which I could create this kind of experience in a story - playing gods trying to guide and protect a hero on a quest and interjecting new challenges - without having anyone play the hero or the hero's party directly?

Hones Question: Why do so many people dislike/outright hate D&D and Pathfinder?

I'm definitely not the most experienced roleplayer. In my former group, we had a Shadowrun campaign going for a good year, then a couple of FATE one shots, and a good 3 months of Pathfinder before our gm had to move to another town. Entering Pathfinder with this background, i had a lot of fun with it, and our gm said that it's relatively comparable to D&D.

There are legitimate reasons to prefer other games over the D&D milieu, but the most outspoken hate comes from people who just hate things that are popular.

Answer the following questions about your character:

>Where does your character live? Who else lives there?
>Where is the character from originally? If this is a different place, why did he/she leave?
>What kind of family did he/she come from?
>What does your character do for a living?
>What would he/she PREFER to do for a living?
>How much schooling has he/she had?
>How smart is he/she?
>Who does your character love? What is his/her strongest attachments?
>What does your character care about?
>Who is he/she in love with? If this was in the past, what happened?
>What has disappointed your character?
>What is he/she proud of?
>What is his/her biggest vice?
>What is he/she insecure about?
>What is your character's biggest shame?
>How do other people see this person?
>What does your character smell like?
>What makes your character happiest?
>What does he/she dream about?
>What is your character's earliest memory?
>Does your character enjoy thinking about his/her life, or are they trying to forget?
>Is your character nostalgic for something? What?
>Is your character waiting for something? What?

These questions are paraphrased from writer Audrey Niffenegger, and can apply to TTRPGs as much as they do actual fiction writing. The more you answer, the better idea you'll have of the character's personality and history.

Look at various forms of personality type charts, like Zodiac signs, blood types or MBTI. Even if you feel like they're just superstitious bullshit, they usually provide various archetypes for you to choose from. Listening to music might also give you inspiration, especially if you listen to the lyrics.
If you're looking for more specific personality quirks, my experience has taught me that you can't really force those well. They'll just come naturally as you write more of the character (or in case of RPGs, play them more).

That or just google some "100 questions about your RPG character" thing, that will force you to come up with a backstory to answer all questions.

Interesting idea. I'll give it a shot.

You are GMing a campaign and one player seems to always have a trick up his sleeve to get out of the situation you have the players in without much trouble. You've double-checked the rules and determined that he isn't breaking any of them nor ignoring any restrictions. He just really knows the system, better than you do in fact. Most of the other players are content to let him play his min-maxed character and do what he does. However, a lot of his actions have thrown a wrench into your ideas about the general direction the campaign is going in. What do you do?
>>
>>53373667
How is that a dilemma?

Whats the best way to stat out a war wagon full of orcs to fight my party? My party will be on foot and I'm thinking there will be about 6 orks in the wagon with bows and swords shooting out. The wagon will be powered by goblins turning the wheels or will be pulled by some boars.
Do I just stat the orks inside or should I stat out the war wagon as one entity?

I couldn't find anything on enemies fighting from carriages

If at any point they're gonna get out of the war-wagon, stat them each.
If they're just gonna fight in it and you're gonna have it blow up when it's defeated, just stat the wagon.

So I've been looking through my Pathfinder books for an artifact (major or minor, I don't care which at this point) to give to a 1st level party that would kick-off an adventure. The problem is finding the right one that will meet the following criteria:

1: needs to be something inherently interesting enough to build an adventure around.
2: something that while inherently useful is not so OP for their APL that it instantly TPK's the party or completely breaks the game I don't want their every solution to be "use the artifact" but at the same time it needs to be useful enough that they want to hold onto it.

Any suggestions?

and "Don't play Pathfinder" is not a valid suggestion

if you have celestial kirin and kami of the painted road on the board and you play a torii watchward can you give the kami protection from white so that it doesn't explode?

what about protection from creatures?

if i have celestial kirin in play with a 3cmc creature and i play bestow an eidolon of countless battles onto the kirin that doesn't trigger the kirin ability right? when you bestow the eidolon it doesn't count as a spirit? and it wouldn't trigger if that creature died and the eidolon falls off because it doesn't count as being played?
>>
>>53373417
Jein. You CAN give your Kami protection from white; both the Kirin and the Kami are your permanents, which means you control their triggers. Since both triggers are wanting to go onto the stack at the same time, you can stack them as you like, having Kami's trigger resolve first to give pro-white, THEN Kirin's trigger resolve.

This will not save your Kami, because protection does not stop global destruction events. Protection stops DEBT: Damage, Enchant/Equip, Block, Target. Celestial Kirin is not attempting to do any of those things to the Kami, so Protection won't save it.

Bestowing won't trigger the Kirin. Bestow makes it into a noncreature spell, which means it can't have creature subtypes (since it's not also Tribal). It won't trigger Kirin when it converts from an Aura to a dude, for the reason you said- you didn't cast anything. It just changed what it looks like.
