1655 – The Invasion of Jamaica begins during the Anglo-Spanish War.
1776 – American Revolutionary War: A Continental Army garrison surrenders in the Battle of The Cedars.
1802 – Napoleon Bonaparte founds the Legion of Honour.
1848 – Mexican–American War: Mexico ratifies the Treaty of Guadalupe Hidalgo thus ending the war and ceding California, Nevada, Utah and parts of four other modern-day U.S. states to the United States for US$15 million.
1919 – Mustafa Kemal Atatürk lands at Samsun on the Anatolian Black Sea coast, initiating what is later termed the Turkish War of Independence.

1941 – The Viet Minh, a communist coalition, formed at Cao Bằng, Vietnam.
1942 – World War II: In the aftermath of the Battle of the Coral Sea, Task Force 16 heads to Pearl Harbor.
1959 – The North Vietnamese Army establishes Group 559, whose responsibility is to determine how to maintain supply lines to South Vietnam; the resulting route is the Ho Chi Minh trail.
1991 – Croatians vote for independence in a referendum.
It is 374 years since the Battle of Rocroi, which resulted in the victory of a French army under the Duc d'Enghien against the Spanish Army under General Francisco de Melo only five days after the accession of Louis XIV to the throne of France. Occuring late in the Thirty Years' War, the battle is considered by many to be the turning point of the perceived invincibility of the Spanish tercio.
The Habsburg Spanish army of about 27,000 men advanced from Flanders, through the Ardennes, and into northern France to relieve French pressure on the Franche-Comté and Catalonia. The Spanish troops set siege to Rocroi, which lay athwart the route to the valley of the Oise. The French, under the command of 21-year-old Louis, duc d'Enghien, reacted quickly and forced a battle before the arrival of 6,000 Spanish reinforcements. The Spanish failed to block the route to Rocroi, which passed through a defile bordered by woods and marsh. Enghien advanced through the defile and assembled his force along a ridge looking down on the besieged town of Rocroi. The Spanish quickly formed up between the town and the ridge. The French army, some 23,000 strong, was arranged with two lines of infantry in the center, squadrons of cavalry on each wing and with a thin line of artillery at the front. The Spanish army was similarly arranged, but with its infantry in their traditional tercios, or squares. The two armies bivouacked in their positions for the night.
At dawn the French army attacked, but the French infantry in the centre were bested by the Spanish. The cavalry on the French left, advancing against Enghien's orders, was also thrown back. But the cavalry on the French right, under the command of Jean de Gassion, routed the Spanish cavalry opposite. Enghien was able to follow this up by attacking the exposed left flank of the Spanish infantry. Spanish cavalry made a successful counter-attack to drive off the French cavalry, but were checked by the advance of the French reserve.
This is a thread for discussing Wild Talents, Reign, Monsters and Other Childish Things and any other games built on Greg Stolze's One Roll Engine.
>***The System
Roll some d10s. Find matches. The number of matching dice is your Width. The number ON the dice is your Height. So a Set of [5,5,5] has a Width of 3 and a Height of 5, written as 3x5. That's it. Width and Height tell you a lot about your action, such as how fast it was, how strong it was, how precise it was, etc. Everything in the system is built around this fast, simple mechanic.
>***The Games
>Nemesis
A game about cosmic horror that invented the Madness system that would later be used in Unknown Armies. It's available for free on ArcDream's website here: http://www.arcdream.com/pdf/Nemesis.pdf
>Godlike
Superhero roleplaying during World War II. Fight supersonic Nazis and invisible French knife maniacs in a brutal setting where you're equally likely to be killed by a mortar blast as from a supervillain.
>Wild Talents
The sequel to Godlike, blowing the doors of the system to let you create any superpower you can imagine. /tg's favorite ORE game.
>Monsters and Other Childish Things
You're a kid with an imaginary monster friend who's real, and you have adventures. Converts nicely to Jojo and Persona.
>Reign
High fantasy roleplaying in a crazy world that would need to have an entire post just about it.
>A Dirty World
Noir at its best. Relentlessly focused on character growth and psychology. A much lighter system than the others.
>Better Angels
You're a supervillain whose power comes from a contract with a demon. Try not to get dragged to hell.

Tell us about your Wild Talents campaign
What house rules or systems have you cooked up with the ORE?
Let's stat up some characters together.
I stated up Yondu in last week's Stat Me thread. I think it came out rather nicely.
Yondu Udonta
STATS
Body 3d Coordination 3d
Sense 2d Mind 2d
Charm 3d Command 4d
BASE WILL 7
SKILLS
Athletics 2d (4d), Brawling 3d (6d), Block 2d (5d), Endurance 1d (4d), Dodge 2d (5d), Drive (Ravager Vessel) 3d (6d), Stealth 3d (5d), Weapon (Firearms) 2d (5d), Perception 2d (4d), Empathy 2d (4d), Scrutiny 1d (3d), Navigation 3d (5d), Streetwise 3d (5d), Lie 2d (5d), Persuade 2d (5d), Intimidate 3d (7d), Interrogate 2d (6d), Leadership 4d (8d), Stability 3d (6d)
LOYALTY: His Crew (2), The Ravagers (1), Peter Quill (3)
PASSION: Getting Paid (1)
WHISTLING ARROW (10 pts per die) 5d+1wd (90 pts)
Attacks Range+1 (Delicate Focus-2, On Sight+1, Go First+1, Spray+4, If/Then-1(each Spray set must be applied to different target), Locational-1, Penetration+3)
Useful Speed
EFFECTS: Yondu's Whistling Arrow is a deadly ranged weapon inflicting Width+1 in Shock and Killing. It has a thermally charged arrowhead capable of piercing up to 3 layers of armor; exceptional speed allowing it to strike targets as if its Width was 1 greater for timing purposes; and precise guidance, which adds +4d to Yondu's dice pool and allows him to use each Set he rolls as an attack against a different target. The arrow has an effective range of 320 yards and can be guided to targets even through transmitted images, such as through a security feed.
Yondu controls his arrow by means of a fin-like apparatus attached to his cranium. It has 3 hit boxes, and striking it requires a Height of 10. A blow to the head is also capable of breaking Yondu's concentration, nullifying any unresolved Sets for that round.*
In a pinch, Yondu can also grasp the arrow in his hand to use it to slow his descent as a sort of makeshift parachute.
*this last element is a bit dodgy since it doesn't ACTUALLY happen in the film, but it seems a fair trade-off since this is a ridiculously lethal weapon
>What house rules or systems have you cooked up with the ORE?
My group has largely redone how healing works in Wild Talents. The RAW system is good but kind of punishing (it takes forever to heal damage and you can actually hurt yourself worse if you roll badly), which is great for very gritty games. Here's out lighter alternative:
>Roll Mind + First Aid to heal Width in Shock
>If you roll a Width of 3 or greater, you can convert 1 Killing to Shock
>If multiple people are healing you, you can combine their Widths
>Each time you're healed with First aid you use up one of your First Aid Checks, which are equal to your Body Dice. Each night of restful sleep regenerates one First Aid Check.
It's leads to a smoother, more forgiving play experience than the vanilla "first aid kind of sucks, especially if you're badly wounded".
Suggestions for characters to Stat:

Are you going to tell the sky wizard he can't have a sword?
How do you make a "Roll to defend" system as un-crunchy as possible? What systems are good examples?
What does 'crunchy' mean?
>>53383364
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=N8P1oGF2nnA
Munchy crunchy
>>53383364
Have to *crunch* too many numbers per action to determine success.
Hence crunchy.
Like when you have to roll more than 2 dice and add modifiers from more than 3 sources.
Most systems have a 'roll to hit' way of doing things.
Some of them are a 'roll against his attack' thing instead, but they all seem crunchy to me even if it seems like it would be fun mechanically. Eventually it would just take too long to be worth it.
I'm wanting to run a STALKER style campaign but i'm not sure what system to use, i was going to do D20 modern but everyone said it was fuck garbage. Help please

Use GURPS. Even GURPS haters admit that this is the best kind of game to use it for.
>>53382265
here is a shill for you. mind you, its not finished
>>53382337
>>53382312
Not familiar with GURPS, well not playing with it i mean, and i have a setting in mind already.
>Get called a Hive mind
>Is actually a single mind spread across mutiple bodies
This is a personal irk of mine; Hive Minds are a collection of seperate minds and entities linked together. Things like the Borg, Tyranids, and Zerg aren't hive minds; they're actually just a single mind spread across multiple bodies.
>>53382090
A hive is, genetically, a single organism spread across multiple bodies. It makes sense that a "hive mind" would be a single mind spread across multiple bodies.
>>53382090
But the zerg aren't that, they even have sapient underlings don't they?
>>53382189
Cerebrates are self aware, self controlling individuals that are psonically linked to, and communicate with, the overmind. It's less like the fingers on a hand, and more like you have AI robots that are programmed to fulfill your desires however they can. In the end, you can shut them down or take direct control, but most of the time they are autonomously working to further your own goals.
artwork to use as inspiration for your D&D games
Look up Zladislaw Bresinski, this guy painted his nightmares for like 20 years. Good nightmare fuel for a weird fantasy setting.
This is incontrovertible and cannot be disputed.
>shitting on Sicilian Defense and other grandmaster staples
Those openings are popular for a reason.
>>53381273
Chess hipsters fuck off.
>>53381362
Not that I don't respect the Kasparovs and Anands of the world, but it's a sad fact that when you get to elite GM level, you lose the ability to do anything but hide behind a pawn wall like a little bitch and try to perfect your position for a winning endgame. They almost never do openings like King's Gambit which invite a lot of tactics, because one slip and you fall off the cliff. Positional chess is much safer.
It is nice, almost touching, that Carlsen has a pretty large opening repertoire because even Kasparov, for all his skill at opening preparation, very rarely deviated from the usual "safe" openings like Ruy Lopez, Sicilian, and Indian Defenses, and his choice of openings got even more conservative in his later career.
So let me get this straight.
The most powerful psyker in the galaxy is in charge of the biggest bunch of most easily corruptible chumps in the galaxy. His appearance, voice, everything about him changes depending on who he's talking to, suggesting he determines how he appears to people, and to the majority of plebs, he appears as a 12 foot tall adonis in shining golden armour with a fucking halo.
This guy somehow got the most in-fightyest species in the galaxy outside of the Orks to work together and unite under one banner, under his rule, and again, he's the most powerful psyker in the galaxy, and they're easily manipulated chumps, as is repeatedly shown.
He gets them to build him a massive golden palace on Terra, the size of a large city or small country depending on who's writing about it, and inside it, in secret, he builds a massive solid gold fucking throne which is powered by human souls, and which amplifies his psychic power like crazy.
So you have a guy who is out and out openly known to have been subtly influencing humanity for millenia now openly in charge of the entire species, wearing a crown, sitting on a giant golden throne... and you think he's the good guy?
>>53381168
“But wait”, you cry, “it's not like he WANTS to be worshipped! He bitchslapped Lorgar for writing a book, remember?”
Yeah, he bitch slapped him for writing it TOO SOON. Before he was ready to sit on his golden throne and actively psychically dominate the entire species at once and use them as zombie slaves to build more giant golden statues.
He wasn't ready to be worshipped yet, absorbing all that power, and he was afraid people would notice it. And they did. He didn't stop Lorgar in time. The people who listened to Lorgar, and those already worshipping him, made ripples in the warp. That's how the Chaos Gods realized a new challenger had appeared.
So Lorgar just accidentally revealed the Emperor's true intentions too soon, and everything that happened afterwards, from the Heresy to getting stabbed in the kidney, is just a happy coincidence that stopped this sociopathic monster from psychically dominating the species.
Yep. That's totally it.
>>53381198
But wait,” you cry still, “he's sitting on the throne now! And being worshipped! And he hasn't dominated the minds of anyone yet!”
Exactly. In those thousands of years, despite being an almost entirely secular society, it somehow reverted to mysticism? I wonder how that might have happened. Maybe a demi-god close to death and yet still more psychically powerful than any other hundred special characters glued together subtly influencing the minds of billions of people over the course of millenia is slowly getting his plan back on track.
Getting nearly-killed was, to his mind, just a temporary setback, relatively speaking. The Emperor is being worshipped, daily, by billions and trillions of people. Almost enough to equal the power generated for the other gods by the acts which power them. In fact, I'd argue, trillions of humans will do a lot more worshipping than they will killing, dying and fucking. So he's probably stronger than the other chaos gods by now.
The Emperor won, because this was his goal all along, and it's just happened a different way than he hoped.
What are some mechanical or narrative things about certain games, worlds, dynamics or characters that legitimately get you down and/or pissed?
I hate vancian casters. I hate them so fucking much.
>>53380374
Objective, non-fluid alignment in creatures formed in the material plane
>>53380374
Anything that involves dnd alignment
Defeating enemies increasing characters' skills in areas unrelated to defeating enemies, such as lockpicking or theology.
Lack of intermediate states between full fighting condition and capital-D death
GMs actively punishing behavior that they want to encourage
>>53380374
One thing that makes me turn away from a system faster than anything is having specific rules for every tiny thing that doesn't need them, rather than having flexible rules which allows a GM to apply them for many situations.
Of course what also pisses me off is when a game wants to be "simple" and says you can "do this and that" but gives you NOTHING to use and you have to essentially make new mechanics from scratch or wait for some beta test shit to come out.
