How do you give your setting a sense of history besides "moar ruins!" or "here's a legend lore dump"?
I would say art and architecture is a good way to do it. It's easy to tell which cities and cultures are the oldest because they usually have the grandest architecture and widest array of fine art. It's basically just well preserved ruins.
So my players were interacting with an empire whose ruler had been upon the throne for some 900 years. The empire was of the style of one in the later stages of collapse, witch previous colonies declaring independence. Basically display past glory and the loss of glory is probably the biggest thing I can think of.
Imperial remnants.
Thought that it might be fun to start a thread in which we build short character concepts out of single sentence prompts, accompanying pictures optional. Here's one to start us off:
>She's trying to save her soul while she's still got a soul left to save.
>he wouldn't die even if he was killed
>He's trying to save a damned world
>He will finish his requiem with the blood of the Lord who betrayed him.

Legend of Zelda: Minish Cap
i need help.
i am working on Hoard of the Dragon Queen and can't find a standard size ( Miles measurement ) system so i know how far most of the towns are from each other.
Case-N-Point when my players are going for A to B i want work out the time it takes to travel so i can plan things out for them to do while on the trip.
(starting my players in Berdusk and then to Greenest )
also does the population being 70,000 people in berdusk sound like to much?
i think that is a LOT of people for a 3erd/5th edition game.

For Forgotten Realms specifically, find out how long it takes a player to go from Candlekeep to Baldur's Gate.
Figure the average person can walk about thirty miles per day (4 miles per hour)48.2 km per day or 6.4km per hourand you should be able to come up with a rough distance line.

I meant in the original Baldur's Gate, sorry.

First for blood father(?)
2nd for Slaanesh but before all other normal attackers.
So I haven't been keeping up to date with 8th Ed at all. What are they doing to my Tyranids? Is GW actually buffing them?
I want to homebrew a space fantasy setting.
Are spacefaring dragons flying through the stars a good idea?
Sounds fucking rad. Give them radiation breath or something.
When they die they decompose into a new star.
>>53418874
See Spelljammer. Even regular dragons could be used to pull certain types of ships through space, and there were solar and lunar dragons, and other weird shit.
Lunar dragons were pretty cool, they changed alignment with the shifting of the moon, and could cause lunar based effects (such as werewolves), as well as instantly Charming them. Cool shit.
>>53418874
Yes.
See: the Mi-go.
They're more like fungus than dragons, but fly through space all the same.
Is there any possible way to make a late medieval equivalent generic-fantasy setting with a plausible reason for gunpowder simply not existing?
>Bonus points: It's not that it hasn't been discovered, but due to some constraining factor even if it were it could not be produced or manufactured
After getting absolutely rekt by ten dumbasses with guns and a whole magic academy full of dead kids, the Magic Guild cast a world Enchantment that prevents gunpowder from combusting.
Fuck the laws of physics.
>>53418716
gunpowder was invented exactly once, in china
the equivalent of a thousand monkeys on a thousand typewriters accidentally making shakespear
a world without gunpowder would have been quite likely
>>53418716
The laws of physics are slightly different, meaning that gunpowder doesn't combust.
If people live for thousands of years in 40k, then there must be proctologists, right? Theoretically, Magnus Caldar should have a magos dedicated entirely to his colon health.
Do I smell adventure?
>>53418359
>THAT'S NOT ADVENTURE YOU SMELLSomebody had to say it.
The sad thing is, I can't tell if this is satire are not.
There are 40kids dumb enough to actually think about this kind of stuff.
>>53418359
Not likely.
The 40k answer to failing internal organs is to remove them and replace them with machines and tubes and stuff.
What's the weirdest fighting style you've seen a PC employ?Bonus points; that actually worked
>>53417352
Fucking Keijo. Its a damn shame its been cancelled
>>53417352
In a rather silly IRL game, a friend played a character who paired drunken brawling with opera singing?
>>53417620
It's a bitch, yeah. I actually wrote rules for and ran a Kejio tournament arc in my Legends of the Wulin game, which was a rather funny diversion from the main plot.

Help me with setting for Vampire the Masquerade, please.
I'm making a game set in Las Vegas, but I'm torn between making it in the 60's/70's, or in 90's/00's, if I choose 60's/70's then I can have the Rat Pack, organized crime, Howard Hughes type character, but I can't have the goth-punk culture, as it was intended.
Just do it in the 80s.
>>53417362
But then it's just 80's, there's no Mafia, there's no charismatic background, the new casinos were built, and again, there's no people that look like they came out from Matrix, no distinct atmosphere, or music.
>>53417470
Do you think there is no more Mafia in Vegas? They never left.
How would you adapt the typical gunslinger trope to a fantasy setting ?
>>53416059
Wandslinger.
>>53416092
This.
It's a guy that just shoves spells into bullets.
Step 1 is ask your GM if it's appropriate for the setting.
>WWII campaign with slight magic.
>The party doesn't have magic, but some arsehole enemy soldier has the power to let
the same bombs detonate multiple times.
What can be some good ways to play around with this concept?
Have the allies send the PCs to an axis laboratory trying to infuse guns with magic on an industrial scale. Their job is either to shut it down, or as a bonus objective, sabotage the magic to make the guns less effective.
The Russians develop a bomb with a magical payload. The PCs have to infiltrate an eastern Nazi base and set it off. Alternativly you can have the Americans send the PCs in to sabotage the bomb to ensure the Russians don't become too powerful
Unit 731 is making flesh golems out of political prisoners and POWs. The PCs are sent in to put a stop to the project.

Do you DM adventures in non-european settings?
Should I let my players pick their own magic items?
>>53415812
Absolutely. My homebrew setting is currently centered around a semi-European setting (mishmash of Byzantine empire and Victorian England) but the players have visited not!Japandinavia.
Also, my Faerie lands aren't exactly Europe.
Nice bait
Though egyptians are pretty cool, I don't like seeing them used for bait like this
Ok, /tg/, so I asked this several times on d&d forums in my language, but since no one seems to give a damn there, I decided to try here.
So, I want to get into D&D and have a group of 4 friends that I could play it with, the problem is that I can only find two versions/editions of D&D to buy locally. 4e in my mother tongue and 5e starter kit in english. While I, as you can see, am pretty much fluent in english, my friends are not as much so... still, I've heard that 5e is easier/ more newbie friendly and it also comes with a ready adventure (in 4e I would have to make an adventure by my own, which would make it a bit harder to start)
I ask; What do you advise? Go with 5e and translate to my friends or go with 4e and make an adventure myself?
>>53414944
Don't fall for the 4e meme. What language do you speak?
>>53414967
Polish
>>53414944
What's your native language? Why not just order the 5e kit in your native language online?
