R Player is pretty laggy, so therefore I am using total two AMD Phenom II X6 computers and Hauppauge HD Rocket for 1080p rips. For SD rips one computer have been enough even with slow encoding preset.
As software I am using OBS, since I can configure x264 settings with it for on fly encoding.
But you should be able to do 1080p capture with one Intel i5/i7 computer without capture card, especially if you got Intel Quick Sync or Nvidia NVENC hardware (and that ~2-3 hours of time).

Oh wow, I never thought about using Shadowplay to do it. That's brilliant. I'll have to give that a shot. As a note Shadowplay won't recognize a video player as a valid recording program, so you'll need to use desktop capture and cap full-screen. It uses way more resources, but it'd work.

You can try recording by downloading R player from http://www.r18.com/videos/download/win/1_5_0_7/ and it plays any wmv-file. And beta build of OBS from https://obsproject.com/forum/threads/latest-windows-test-build-0-12-0.23342/

On OBS settings got output, set bitrate around 6000kbps, and behind of "Adnaced Encoder Settings" you can play with Encoder Preset, you should be able to use at least medium-preset. Slower preset means smaller file size, but it requires more CPU power that can lag video.
On Video page set resolution to mach your video and use Common FPS Value 29.97.

Then just add "Game Capture" as source and select "sllauncher.exe: R Player" as Window.
