Make the field larger. Some study a year or two ago figured that if the field were more CFL-sized, there would be fewer severe collisions between the numbers because of there being more lateral room, players could protect against hits better. Do something like tell the owners and stadiums that they've got three years to saw off the first few rows of seats around the field, and do this.

There's a theory that the answer isn't a better helmet, but rather teaching and letting players play without it or even eliminating it from the game altogether, or at least the current style of helmet.

Doing so would teach players how to tackle and hit safely without becoming focused on big hits or leading with their head as often as they do when tackling or blocking.

However, either would take a reversal of football culture and common thought and the willingness to get all youth programs, for however long they exist, and schools on board. There would be no easy way to regulate that.

If all this happens future football would probably resemble rugby a lot.

It's not college I would be worried about it. I think it would be safe. Too much money involved for both the schools and NCAA to walk away or neuter it that much. They'll always embrace their role as the NFL's minor league.

I think U15 and high school programs are or will be in pretty big danger, though. Eventually high schools will go with the tide and won't want to be culpable.

In this scenario, if you want to play football, it would take getting into a 15 or 16+ recreational league divorced of the school system from which colleges would recruit.

If the NCAA is somehow shut out, though, this league could then become the new way for NFL teams to recruit as something like soccer's system. Maybe still a way for both to co-exist, though, with the option to stay in the program and be paid or for colleges to entice players with education + pay by dropping the amateur bullshit.
