Scherbak hasn't proven anything yet, but I though his Russian background might be desirable given Tampa's two young russian forwards. Maybe he'd develop better playing in that system. Andrighetto is the only proven asset leaving, but Montreal really doesn't need another small speedy forward.

Dmen aren't the only ones who need to play defense. The forwards have to do their part as well, and Eberle barely does anything. Yeah we could use a solid number 1 dman that can move the puck and play defense well, but that is near impossible to trade for or sign. It needs to be developed from within.

Ovechkin is what you call an anomaly. He is big and strong, but still fast. He has an amazing shot. His defensive mishaps are usually made up for with his offensive power. But also notice how Washington hasn't won a cup with Ovechkin.

But why not improve both? Get rid of the forwards who are defensive liabilities and don't have high competitive level. Bring in dmen who can skate and play their position. Both those things aren't incompatible, they can be done at the same time. It is much harder to bring in dmen who can do those things plus move the puck effectively.

Oilers need to get rid of Gryba to start. He can't skate, and he can't move the puck. Every game he gives up opportunities to the other team. Nurse and Davidson are good skaters, but both need work at moving the puck effectively. They are both still young so a little more time may be needed to realize that potential. Shultz started the year terribly but he is starting to play his position better. He still isn't making smart plays on the pp and it doesn't seem like he will get any better offensively. He is still better than Gryba though. Fayne is just fast enough not to be useless. He makes smart plays and plays his position well. He is probably the second best dman right now next to Sekeras. Sekeras is the only dman that skates well and makes effective passes. He wouldn't be a top dman on many other teams in the league, but he is the best the Oilers have right now.

There isn't much coming up on the FA market this summer for top dmen. Buff, Goligoski, Quincey, Gunnarsson, Polak, Yandle, Russell, Hamuis. Buff is the only one with top 2 ability, but he would come at a steep price, especially if Edm was to get him, and he probably wouldn't want to play there anyways. Goligoski, Quincey, Gunnarsson, and Yandle could be helpful, but they aren't going to be any better than what Sekeras is for the team. Picking up one of them would still help a great deal, as long as it doesn't cost the team to much considering they are paying too many players large contracts.

The only way to get a top dman, and really solve the problem would be through a trade during the draft. But they would have to overpay to get anyone.
