Not necessarily, every team has different taxes applicable to them, and IIRC California has some of the harshest payroll taxes towards pro athletes.

Combine that with the fact your cost of living just doubled pretty much across the board and it's not as clearcut as you would think, the players all essentially were just given a pretty substantial paycut

Los Angeles isn't a typical city, its just a huge (in terms of space) aggregation of smaller cities/towns, and while some of them are quite shit (Compton, Watts, etc.), the others are very nice.
