Its related to personality, hiddens and the squad status given in their contract so you can never be sure but to give yourself the best chance don't just make someone a key player because it allows you to give them the wages they want because if you do that they'll expect to be starting nearly every game.

I'd say more likely the previous FMs were too lax on it and footballing world has changed a bit making transfers a more public thing ensuring it doesn't stay a secret and increasing interest and bids on a player.

You're as bad as those saying there are too many injuries in FM. There aren't. There are more than in previous FMs but the previous FMs had injuries way too low so it isn't a bug, its an intentional increase to simulate realism.
