I'm not American obviously, so can someone explain why college basketball players can go one and done, but college football players must play three years?

The NBA requires potential draftees to have completed at least one year of college. Meanwhile, the NFL requires potential draftees to have been at least three years removed from high school. Technically, players don't NEED college football to get drafted in the NFL (Moritz Börhinger got drafted despite never playing college football,) but the exposure the NCAA provides is nearly essential.

personally I think its an absolute sham that college football/basketball players don't get paid vast sums of money. Their NCAA sports are making more money than the professional versions.

probably because foreign players can be draft by NBA if they are 19 or older
Draft system works in a vacuum for the NFL though, as only USA produces handegg players
You'll also notice that the MLS draft is a joke, US football clubs can't really force young players to vegetate 1 or worse 3 years in a college with subpar competition, when foreign clubs sign 16 years olds as pros.

1. Everybody can play it. You don't need to be a genetical freak. If you're small or tall, it doesn't matter, as both have advantages and drawbacks. It's the the most inclusive sport possible.
2. It's a social game. Humans are social animals, and Football is the perfect team sport for them. The constant flow of the game, the subtle intricacies of simple but sophisticated rules, will make the most cohesive teams, where everybody is a friend, always perform better than problematic teams.
3. Amongst the animal reign, Human beings are puny, weak and slow. But they physically excel in one thing: endurance running. And Football perfectly embodies this very unique Human advantage and makes perfect use of it.
4. It's a thinking Human game. As said by the legend Johan Cruyff: "You play football with your head, and your legs are there to help you". And that's true, players must constantly use their mind, another gift from evolution, to resolve a match.

Now we enter the best period of the liturgical year of sports. hockey is done, basketball is done, and football remains done. For the next several weeks, it's just smooth sailing of regular fucking baseball, the best sport of them all, to the enragement of all with inferior sensibilities.
This is the god-tier season of the sport-liturgical year, because it rewards those who most deserve rewarding (people who pay attention to baseball), and it punishes those who most deserve punishing (stupid people who find baseball boring and who are waiting for inferior sports to come back online).
Please note that no one who matters, cares about soccer. so it doesn't matter whatever soccer happens to be doing at this point in the year, active or no. Only the American liturgical sport year matters in the arena of world sport.
