I am not a good songwriter. Also, the two releases I did under the Temple of Malice name suck. The drums were quiet, and the vocals were shit.

>last 5 songs (sort of)
I was listening to Earth Crisis' album, Destroy The Machines which is their GOAT. Opening track is perfect with that drop-D sludgy guitar riff.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sa-gaj3LfFs
Before that, I was listening to one of my fav Rollins Band tracks while curled up in the dark thinking of how I lash out just like my dad, and also trying to muster up the energy to make dinner, which I thankfully did.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DDjdTxlA-FU
Before that, I was listening to some Wayne Shorter and Coltrane during the drive back home right after playing jazz for 2 hours at school, which was fun but mentally exhausting.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=k_VYGfhkn5g
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QTMqes6HDqU
Before that, I was listening to Whirr's NEET anthem, which I love so much that I learned it on guitar with a EADG#BEb tuning.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=F56ivpXvY50
>fav album
John Frusciante - The Empyrean
just a lot of cathartic feels to comfort that kys feel, ya feel?
>fav band/artist
idk it was Frusciante like 3-4 years ago, then Title Fight 1-2 years ago but I don't listen to either anymore. Now I'm just floating through jazz which I've been rediscovering this past year. There isn't a single jazz album I love start to finish, although I've listened to maybe 100-200 jazz albums so far. Wayne Shorter's my favorite jazz composer, but not much beyond that. I've been listening to a lot of Whirr and learning a bunch of their songs, but I'm not that obsessed with them as artists. I've been listening to a lot of Hiatus Kaiyote on repeat. Maybe them.
>instruments
drums - 8 years roughly, but never owned a kit, always played someone else's or the church's, so I'd say I'm at an intermediate level
guitar - 4 years but mostly acoustic and barely electric, but it's a nice way to de-stress since I strum hard af to Title Fight & Whirr
>projects
nah I suck
>>
oh yeah and I've played saxophone for about 10 years but as far as jazz goes, I'm still at a beginner level, and I guess technically I'm still an amateur in general because I still have trouble staying in tune

I dont have the patience for writing. If I write one sentence and judge it myself, I start hating myself because Im not good enough. Thats dumb, I know. But I cant help it. So i´ll go the regular route of the bitter critic that judges other people because he cant produce art himself :^)

Dude I think it's awesome that you're all in with the singer-songwriter thing. I'm listening to the first track of your album and loving it. I could listen to this on the road. I think I might. :)

>post ur music d00d
ehhhhh I guess, but idk man, even on /soc/ there seem to be some assholes who troll people just for the heck of it. Maybe when I upgrade from my laptop mic to a decent one, then I'll be more willing to share. What do you use to record?

Dude I'm on the 3rd track and damn this is really solid stuff. I'm really enjoying it. I wouldn't be surprised if you gained a decent following in a few years after a few more releases.

I dunno what to post, really. My youtube channel is mostly just covers done over the course of a couple of years and I don't really like them, so I don't take it seriously. Same with my soundcloud. :/

Well it's okay if you don't really feel comfortable posting that kind of stuff, I get how that can make someone a bit anxious, I was just curious.

And thanks man. I was bit nervous with the way that EP thing turned out since I kind of rushed it all just for the sake of having a completed collection of songs but whatever. I'm hopefully gonna put much more effort and time into whatever I make next.

oh, and I use a a scarlett 2i2 interface along with an AT 2035 mic to record. Nothing crazy, but it gets the job done.

Thanks for understanding. Honestly, though, I think my lyrics are pretentious af and too emo. Musically, I'm pretty happy with my stuff, although it's relatively simple to a lot of other songwriters. I dunno. I currently have 2 finished songs, but I can't bring myself to finish the lyrics for either. For one of them, I swear I've completely rewritten the lyrics around 5 times. I started rewriting it again a few days ago, but I'm having trouble finishing it. Would you mind critiquing what I have so far? I get pretty emo, but I guess I can't help it. The music is pretty much a ripoff of Title Fight, so it's upbeat emo punk I guess.

wrapped by the cold hands of doubt
freed my hand but it seldom reaches out
cause outside there lies Intention
splayed on the ice
face twisted in agony
and flayed for its self-righteous skin
while behavior escapes conviction
and the meek don't inherit the earth
what's it worth
when humanity's crushed underneath
the cynical heels of
(at this point I just couldn't stand myself so I stopped)

but I like my chorus, which has stayed the same through each revision:

make amends with uncertainty
wear your ignorance on your sleeve
leave the thought that what's been done
has been done has been done has been done
because what's been done no no you haven't seen

I still cringe at a lot of my lyrics. I write poetry somewhat often, but it doesn't seem to help all that much. HOLP PLS ANON. :(

How does the mic compare to the Yeti? (even if you haven't tried it, you must've compared them on paper, right?)
I've been wondering, is a DAW an okay replacement for a Multi-Track like yours? I've been using Reaper and I'm pretty satisfied with it. I don't know too much about multitracks, although I've recorded a little on my friend's TASCAM. What's the big deal with multitracks, eh?

ah, to clarify, I have a handful of completed songs, maybe 6. But these current 2 are really bugging me. I've been having writer's block, musically, for more than a year now. With poetry, I'm fine. I dunno what it is. Maybe recording would help boost my self-esteem. Maybe I just need to keep going to therapy.

Of course lyrics are such a subjective thing and I don't really even know what I'm doing either so don't put too much weight into this...

but anyways, I definitely know that trapping of falling into the "edgy 14 year old lyricist" stereotype. Pretty much all of my songs probably come from that same emotional state, but what has worked for me is just really trying hard on learning how to evoke those same feelings through other less cliched imagery. For example, the biggest tonal kind of theme I'm reading from those lyrics is just some general sense of frustration, so perhaps rather than describing that feeling so explicitly, you could write some extended metaphor of something you've done, or some situation you can think of that communicates that same emotional state. That way the listener sort of gets to experience it in a more natural way rather than you just telling them what bothers you. This less direct method also tends to soften the edge and whatnot (though if you listen to someone like Giles Corey/HANL they get away with edgy as fuck lyrics just simply by owning and going all in with it, so that's another option).

Sorry if that's all pretty vague and unhelpful. I'm not really an authority on this kind of thing and am still learning myself, but those are just some initial thoughts.

And I've never used a Yeti, though I'm fairly certain using a mic through an interface is just going to be all around better than just a USB based mic like a Yeti. And I'm not exactly sure if by "multi-track" you just mean the interface? But anyways that doesn't really make a difference with using a DAW. I use Reaper to record as well and that's all been fine as far as I can tell.

and as far as the writers block thing, I don't know what to tell ya. There's so many things in life that can contribute to that, usually its just a matter of time for something like that to resolve itself. Just hang in there m8.

I shouldve read the whole thread before trying to respond to koranon, you wrote everything I wanted, just better. I would completely agree that working with metaphors is the best way to avoid edge and make the theme more legit, you seem to follow that example aswell on your EP
and it does work pretty good!
