Sup /sci/. I'm a Math major going to a 50-80th ranked state university In The United States of America. I'm a junior RN and I'm working with a professor, hopefully getting a paper published before the end of the year(with me as the only co-author). I want to go to a top 30 school for mathematics. What else do I need to do in order to be competitive? I plan on applying for the spring semester so my senior year counts for something. I'm not really a "prodigy", I failed a few math classes in HS; however, I really straightened myself up in college and have a GPA of 3.96. Fuck, do I even stand a chance, or am I just gonna be another pleb doing a PHD in triple integrals at small town college USA.

So which of these options is better for career prospects:
1) get a PhD from a top university but don't publish anything particularly interesting before graduating
2) get a PhD from a low-to-mid-tier university but score a few high-impact publications during your PhD
