It's deceiving, actually the dog turns its head left so that the lower end of the stick can slide past the post as he walks forward

You can see the top end lurch as it rotates forward as the bottom end makes contact and swings back, you're probably looking too late to see it. Also the bottom end of the stick is hidden by that section of beam which makes it confusing.
