Does it really matter if science is funded by industry? It just gives people an excuse to call others corporate shills.

science is about looking for knowledge about how the world works, not looking for immediately applicable knowledge.
The first kind is supposed to contribute to the whole community (by opening the way to the second one further in the future potentially), while the second one contributes to... the first one that finds it.

This is why science is publicly funded, while research and development is funded by the private sector.

The main issue with Industrial funding is the way they manage Intellectual Property:

If a University discovers something they publish it in a Scientific Journal - When Industry discovers something they write an internal confidential report, patent it or even cover it up to prevent their competitors gaining access.

This is not always the case, though: I work in R&D and we can publish some things after a lengthy approval process

I guess what I'm asking is why people thinking science funded by or carried out by companies or industries is automatically a bad thing in most cases.
>>
>>7803814
people don't think it's a bad thing. As I said, science and R&D are not the same thing.
Universities can research a million things but don't have infinite money. Industrials are only willing to research immediate applications.

It's a simple division of tasks.
If industrials do this, universities do that. Both are necessary.
