It's that time again. Post progress.

>currently working through "Adding and subtracting fractions with unlike denominators word problems"

>genuinely enjoying myself and having fun learning

I have a poor public school education of maths, and some brain problems so I love the fact that I can somewhat teach myself maths and learn all of this shit. Slowly but surely.

>>

>>7795059

Nice going, keep it up.

>>7795059

This is what I'm at so far

>>

>>7795073

How long did it take you to get that far? I'm only six days in.

>>

This is great to see. I finished precalc when I was 16 and then decided to become a fuckup for a few years, not focusing on my studies at all. Had a terrible time in college studying various humanities subjects. Khan Academy as well as various other online resources and textbooks have made me feel like I have a second lease on life. I'm completely obsessed with learning math and science skills and have no desire to do drugs or slack off etc. in it for the long haul!

>>

>why did my progress drop by 30%? Edition

Working back through algebra and geometry is annoying. But its cool that they added arthimetic and geometric series.

>>

>>7795059

>high school and beyond

KA confirmed for shit tier

>>

Does anyone know how good integral calculus is on Khan Academy? I'm probably going to have a shitty teacher for it at my uni, and I'm afraid of not learning all I was supposed to learn.

>>

>>7795494

I would only use khan academy up to pre-calc, then move on to a book.

>>

>>7795472

It bugs me a bit too but this entire set-up must be relatively new, right? Since they continue adding new stuff on a seemingly-daily basis.

>>

>>7795924

I assume the most time consuming part of the process of adding new material is the videos. I feel like it's entirely possible to setup automated questions for sections, depending on what you're trying to do.

But they aren't debugging everything fully right away. One problem I had was write down an inequality and something like

8x^2 < 4x(x-3) was the answer they wanted

but

2x < (x-3) wasn't acceptable

and

8x^2 < (4x^2 - 12x) wasn't acceptable

which is bullshit ass bullshit.

>>

>>7795059

Slowly but steady brehs, we're all gonna make it.

The most difficult part right now is divisions and multiplications of large numbers without a calculator, first time I do it, I want to get used to not having to rely on a calculator.

Planning on mastering Calculus by the end of the year.

also pic related is progress so far

>>7795552

why, is it not well explained?

keep it up anon, you'll get there. After going back over the new stuff >>7795472, I'm progressing again.

>>

>>7796118

damn that's some nice progress you got there, how long did it take you anon? and how can I visualize it like that, I only have pic related's listing

also, anyone here tried other stuff besides math? is it good or not really worth it?

Been going for about a month and a half (Signed up Nov. 30), on and off at work, when I'm not busy.

>>

>>7796102

OP here.

It's really fucking neat how I'm learning how to multiply and divide basic 10s numbers without a calc, by adding or removing 0s. I don't remember this from school at all.

>red dragon avatar

My brother.

>>

Started on ~April 1 2014. I haven't even been diligent enough to get through the end of high school. I'm just finishing the middle school portion. And now they're adding new shit which I'll have to go back and complete.

>>

>>7795059

good shyt man, working through algebra 1 right now

>>

is khan academy the duolingo of math

>>

Does anyone know where I can recap on sec, cosec and cot trig identities and formula? Does KhanAcademy not do them?

>>

>>7796574

It's the math you should have had in high school, most public school teachers don't know what they're doing or don't care.

>>

>>7796627

Here's a sheet I kept from high school. Probably the best collection of trig identities I've seen.

>>

>>7795081

February 2, 2014. Right now I'm in third-year and still trying to get all this basic shit down just so I can get as high a percentage as possible.

>>

>>7796627

I always got confused by the naming scheme, personally. Like some is opp/hyp, but cosecant is hyp/opp.

To me the names should be:

Sine: opp/hyp

Cosine: hyp/opp

Secant: adj/hyp

Cosecant: hyp/adj

Tangent: opp/adj

Cotangent: adj/opp

Would make them easier to remember, but alas, I'm not an ancient Greek mathematician.

>>

It is time for slumber. Not a whole awful lot of progress made but progress was made.

Happy learning, /sci/friends.

>>

MY BROTHERS. I want to make it from where I'm at now to mastering Trig within the next 6.5 days. It's going to take a bit of work.

I need to complete 5th grade maths today. I've been focusing on that and the Arithmetic section. Trying to remember all the different things regarding finding, multiplying, and dividing with percentages is rough on my damaged brain.

>>

i hope we can have daily or atleast weekly threads for khan academy. will keep me accountable of all the work i have to do.

>>

>adding and subtracting negative fractions, decimals, and percents

I feel like I'm cheating by using calc to do quick equations when I'm converting to the same denominator but it saves time.

>>

>>7801712

Like when you're trying to simplify the the fraction and stuff that isnt obvious like 42/10 or something? Because yes I do this too..

Though I'm sure there's some cool do-it-in-your-head trick for it out there.

Are you on Arithmetic as well? 4th day now, 94% there.

>>

>>7797732

Y u skip basic geometry?

>>

>>7801780

Been slowly chipping away at it along with the earlier grades. Main stats right now are:

>K-2nd, 3rd, 4th at 100%

>5th at 97%

>Early Math 100%

>Arithmetic 93%

>Pre-Algebra 72%

>>

>>7801712

I'm completely avoiding a calculator on purpose,it slows you down a lot, but it's worth it for them understanding gains

Congrats op for taking the time to teach yourself stuff that doesn't come easily. I am glad you enjoy learning, information acquisition makes my dick hard. I hope you find it enriches your life in ways ou never expected

>>

>>7795059

how comes ive never heard of this beautiful website. thank you /sci/

>>

I found early math too difficult so I started with linear algebra and working my way down.

>>

What about a not math courses? They are good?

>>

>>7802263

I'm loving it. Slowing down a bit because some things I'm learning and working on now are taking a little longer to process, plus I've been doing some other things on the internet as well. Still enjoying and progressing through.

>>7802468

u wot

>>7802469

Aside from programming, everything else seems to be strictly watching lectures.

>>

!!

>>

I've recently discovered both ttc math videos and Khan academy, and like op I have a poor grasp of math(slacked off since elementary), along with slight brain damage from an injury.

My question is, would Khan academy, and ttc be good to use in supplementation of each other? Or would I overwhelm myself?

Just wanna fix myself as much as I can so I can go to college, and not be a dumbass anymore

>>

>>7806068

I love gondolas.

>>

>>7806081

Fuck yeah dude!

>>7806068

Just realized that wasn't a very good question, seeing as how you guys wouldn't know a strangers limit.

I'm just being indecisive and lazy, gotta break that mindset if I want to really improve.

Downloading as many ttc lectures that will be of use to me, and just signed up for Khan academy.

>>

>>7806119

OP here. You could always start from the very beginning with Khan Academy. I began from K-2nd and am working my way up. For other non-grade sections (like Early Math, Arithmetic, etc), I'd focus on those once the percentage became high enough--or higher than the grade I was working on--to max it.

>>

>>7806134

Good idea anon, ill definitely follow your plan, especially since I'm so far behind :)

By the way since you started Khan academy have you noticed a difference in your day to day life?

For instance has your mental response time improved, or has your thoughts become more clear?

Also are you able to retain information more effectively?

>>

>>7806158

I'm only 11 consecutive days in so I would need a much longer timeframe in order to notice any permanent, even temporary changes. (I don't have much of a day-to-day life at the moment.)

>>

>>7806164

For 11 days in, along with brain problem's your progress is looking good.

I can relate man, hate to say it but I've been a neet for almost 6 years now.

Almost 23, and realized living this way is God awful.

>>

>>7806192

I have a lot of free time, is all. Graduated last semester, currently a NEET now so all my free time is spent in front of a computer.

>>

>>7806301

You're being productive anon, and that counts for alot. If you don't mind me asking, what kind of brain problem's do you have?

>>

>>7806342

Technically Autism Spectrum Disorder although very high-functioning--mainly results in social retardation, anxiety, that, and chronic PTSD which affects hippocampus, frontal lobe, etc. And the obligatory depression. Main issues are severe memory deficits/problems and comprehension issues.

>>

I'm currently learning integral calculus right now, and plan on moving to multivariable and then diffey q.

>>

>>7806365

>I exhibit these same problems

>have never been tested

uh-oh

>>

>>7806342

What are these long-legged Spurdos called or about?

>>

>>7806365

Wow dude, you're what I aspire to be(how well you manage your illnesses despite social problems)

While I don't have Autism Spectrum Disorder. My brain is slightly damaged from an injury 4 years ago, along with PTSD and MDD, your main issues are pretty much what I experience on a daily basis.

The fact that you've completed college, and are working on improving yourself gives me an immense amount of hope, and a strong desire to do the same.

>>7806668

Gondola's

>>

>>7806668

also it's supposed to be a less threatening version of spurdo, something more thoughtful and melancholic

>>

Started 3 days ago, planning to get to pre-calculus soon. Just wanted to review all of my algebra and trig before hitting calculus. After pre-calculus going to start going through the sears zemansky physics and alongside that doing apostol's calculus book.

>>

>>7807421

Forgot pic.

>>

Not using KA, but I'm going through Serge Lang's basic mathematics

Are some of the questions supposed to be fucking hard? Some of the geometry questions are killing me. The earlier chapters were never this bad for me. Then again, I never properly learned geometry.

>>

>>7795975

You divided by x for that second one, so you basically eliminated a solution

>>

Does Khan Academy have much in the way of math past, say, differential equations? I'm interested in learning some high-level math but I'm not going to change my major for the sake of that.

>>

>>7808640

No, unfortunately not. I dream of the day when they add complex, real, functional, and harmonic analysis in there and set theory.

>>

>on Divisibility

>and Volume of Fractions

>progress goes to a snails crawl

>>

I like the activity and attitude on this thread, it's really positive. Keep it up, guys.

>mfw math major at a top math school

>have my own holes in trig and misc. other HS topics due to my past self not giving a shit in school

>>

>tfw had some..... issues when I was 16 and missed a year of school

>tfw still find the occaisional embarassing gap in my knowledge

the other day I had to ask someone how to revolve a 2d shape under a graph, it was embarassing. Thank god for Sal.

>>

Last two trig skills are fucking murdering me. But hey, further than I was last week.

>>

>>7795472

I was fucking 1 skill from mastering algebra 1 and they added 12 god damn skills to it.

Well, I think having people watching my progress will motivate me to stop slacking off so much. Progress as of tonight, day 127.

Wouldn't that be the same thing as the fundamentals?

>>

>>7795059

>>

Is there something painfully obvious I'm missing here? I have no numerical values given.

>>

Just don't forget that khanacademy is not substitute for an actual textbooks.

Stuff from calculus and above are lacking in plenty of areas, plus the problems all around are pretty simple, so use them for practice, but get a textbook for better problems and complete content.

>>

>>7795059

Ok, so I'm 34.

In my late teens/early 20s I was the stereotypical underachiever. In college, before I dropped out, I took through DiffEq and was doing well in that before I dropped out.

After spending the better part of the ensuing decade fixing my fucked up life, I'm finally in position to be able to go back to school and finish my degree.

So my problem is this: I halfway remember this stuff, and because of this, it's really frustrating trying to relearn it (I'm having to start with basic algebra)...have any of you dealt with this kind of frustration and how did you work through it? I'm my biggest problem now, and unless I can fix this somehow, there's no use in bothering to try to go back to school...

>>

>>7812072

Assuming a unit is the length of of cube, then the surface area is 6 units^2 (6 square faces)

>>

>>7812114

Well I say even if you think you know all ofthe content start from k-2nd just to make sure there are absolutely no gaps.

>>

>>7812114

take it from another old fag fuck up that is in his senior year.

college algebra is the hardest class you will ever take. if you master the fuck out of algebra and trig, calculus, ODE/PDE's, numerical methods, and linear algebra will be fucking cake.

undergrad math is really just a few new concepts wrapped up in some very first principles kind of stuff.

>>

>>7812507

That might be a good idea...but I can't imagine that being less frustrating to go back through.

In a way, it's kinda me beating myself up/getting pissed at myself for not doing it right the first time around.

>>7812531

Yeah, that much I definitely remember. I'm not going to even think about enrolling until I have at least through calc I down pat, which means having to wrestle with my least favorite thing ever: factoring.

Fuck. I need to just stop being a bitch about it and do it.

>>

What is a good way to break this into parts so I can figure out the total area? I know it's something involving turning the upper right area into triangle(s) but this is where my comprehension issues crop up and I can't grasp the proper method here.

>>

>>7813423

here's how I'd do it.

>>

Nice to see people excited about math. Keep it up guys :)

>>

>>7813429

Oh shit that should work. Thanks!

>>

>>7810041

How did you get those K-8 levels? Mine doesn't have it

Anyway, it's been 14 days

>>

>>

So how the fuck are these things being tested? All I see is videos.

>>

>>7815058

You complete questions.

>>

>>7815277

I don't see any tests/questions for any of the other subjects. It's just watching videos and gaining "energy points" or something like that.

>>

>>7815286

What other subjects? Math is the only subject that has questions and whatnot. I think all other subjects (except for programming) only have video lectures.

>>

>Median and range puzzlers

wew lad I have not a single fucking clue how to figure any of this out. Maybe it's too much for me to comprehend at one time. I don't know but I'm fucking stumped.

>>

>>7815370

Take a break, and if you don't get it when you come back, post a few here!

>>
