Let's be realistic. His classmates things he's a retard now because that's just how stupid undergrads are, they think being quiet and only anwering shit you memorised when it's a sure shot makes you intelligent. They think being quiet and not taking risks in general makes them intelligent. Hell they think undergrad matters at all.

Now the prof. doesn't care. All undergrads are more or less equally retarded, but this will effect him simply because perceptions are hard to break. In their senior year OP could be the top student, but other students in his year group won't perceive him as brilliant because of this one incident. He will be percieved as a "hard worker", but because he showed weakness everyone will think his achievements are attainable if they "worked harder" themselves.

So graduation year a Prof. has a beer with final years. He's trying to get a perception of what students are intelligent for grad-school and rec. letters. Are people going to talk about OP in a good light? No.
