Our most technologically successful cultures have always colonized other cultures inorder to gain resources and to outsource labour, and hence artifically raise the wellbeing of colonizing society and lower the target society's wellbeing.

In face of potential gains, we tend to disregard things we cannot immediately relate with. Such as nature, animals, etc. Less technologically advanced humans' are just one group of things we neglect, and they have it really easy compared to everybody else.

When we think of aliens, we assume they have similiar traits as we do. Everything else would go against the natural rules that we know: inorder to become superior you have to start from nothing and overcome obstacles. There are many obstacles, and some of them aren't worth the effort. So what often drives development forward as we know it is greed for something better. Something which improves our wellbeing in the future and allows overcoming more obstacles. It isn't only a "human thing". This is a trait in all living things on our planet.

An intellectually superior race wouldn't think any more of us than we think of monkeys or even lesser beings. So it isn't far fetched that aliens would colonize our planet.

The amount of violence involved determines how much they care for us. Even "Invitation to galactic society" type of bullshit is colonization, because inorder to do anything everything needs to be imported here. This will replace most of our technology with their technology, and eventually replace our culture with their culture.

Any alien race that would go though the trouble of traveling all the way to us most likely wouldn't just be doing for mere scientific curiosity unless of coarse they have some highly advanced tech that makes it the equivalent of us going to the moon.

Chances are they want the earths resources, a new colony/home, and maybe sex slaves.

It'd be pretty much impossible to communicate with them so you can rule out any chance of us making some peace treaty.
