What happened is the parent had a pair of underwear go down the drain. The kid is fine as the lye won't be used around him; the parent is considering putting lye down the drain to dissolve the underwear. Lye is good at dissolving cotton because it catalyses hydrolysis reactions and cotton is just a big tangle of cellulose polymer.
