/sci/, is computer science actually a science?
13 posts and 1 images submitted.
>>
No. It is more properly a branch of math than a science.
>>
If I had to choose, should I take a class on network or compiler programming? The networking class had less prereqs, but I kinda wanna learn about how to write a compiler. But then again networks seem really interesting too...
>>
>>8692077
The networking class is probably more directly useful, but also something that you are far more likely to pick up as you go anyway.

Interview weekends for grad schools are wrapping up. How did you guys do? Any interesting stories?

I was getting rejected from every interview due to being a total sperg, and was ready to give up hope, but then on the last weekend one of the current students got really drunk at the lunch event and that took all the attention off my incompetence, leading to an acceptance. Any other funny stories? Did you guys manage to do OK?

That's standard practice, at least in biology. I know you keyboard """""scientists""""" don't spend a lot of time socializing but teamwork is an important part of working in a lab, so they need to make sure people can communicate effectively and not act like egotistical, narcissistic douchebags.
>>
Failed them all without a doubt. I may be in the top 10% of my class, but grad schools worth a damn only take in the best 1%.

At least I have a cushy desk job at an engineering firm lined up.

If I am playing Pokémon Go and am very fortunate enough to encounter 1 Unown per day, how long it would it take to collect all 28 variants, assuming the 1 that shows up per day is random?

I don't really care about the game, I was just trying to do the math for fun and am struggling.

>The unown is random
Somewhere between a February and infinity.
>>
>>8691737
there's only a certain chance by each day to get one. To get all 28 in 28 days is [math]\frac{28!}{28^28}\approx9.2\times10^{-12}[/math]

Number of times a sheet of paper can be folded = infinite
Number of possible shapes in the universe = infinite

This means a sheet of paper can be folded to create any shape in the universe.

Anyone wanna collaborate with me in publishing a paper for a peer-reviewed journal?
14 posts and 3 images submitted.
>>
should we call them manyfolds?
>>
>>8691313
It's structural limitations wouldn't allow you to fold it into all the infinite shapes in the universe.

Nope. Electromagnetism is a [math] U(1) [/math] gauge group, that's not complex enough to describe the other known forces of the standard model. So it wont be enough to describe gravity.

I dropped out of college back in 2015 because I'm lazy and stupid. I've been living in my parents basement since then and have been working the same shitty job since. Is there any way I can get smart and contribute to science without going back to college. I have nightmares about going back to college because I hated it that much, I don't want to go back, but I want to be smart. Thank you.

So no, it's not okay to cringe at this and you're a faggot. It's like saying "Is it okay to cringe at the pilgrims? Columbus made this journey in 1492 after all!" Electrical Engineer here.

I really love the curriculum. In my modern physics class I get super euphoric learning Einstein's theory and quantum theory. In my digital systems class we each had to design a single digit 4-bit calculator. I'm honestly having a blast just reading my textbooks.

Systems, formerly mechatronics.

I get paid a lot to do work that is interesting and enjoyable, but not mentally draining. Great coworkers and managers make it even better.

Why do you guys hate CS? Is it an ironic meme?

Also from the list will I have time to self learn programming if I'm majoring in a core engineering discipline? How much will it benefit me?

Every board has its boogeyman.
>>
>>8691332
I think ours should be engineers though.
>>
>>8691327
First, it is an ironic meme. We have a bunch of stereotypes for everyone here but for some reason CS people ALWAYS feel the need to answer when you call them out. They get salty a post long explanations as for why CS is better.

Compare that to the "engineers R gay" meme. It is dying. Yesterday someone made an engineer thread and I immediately took the first post to say something gay pretending I was an engineer.

No one answered after that.
Everyone ignored the thread
Everyone ignored my comment.

It was sad, but it shows that the stock for that meme is plummeting. Engineers barely even respond to those comments. It is not funny anymore.

CS guys? You simply have to say: CS discrete math course is not even a real math course

and you get:

What the fuck are you talking about? Let me tell you that I took that fucking course last semester and it was really complete and hard because ACTUALLY theoretical computer science is VERY RIGOROUS YOU MOTHERFUCKER. I bet you are just a fucking freshman who took an elective in introductory CS and now think you are so smart huh. Well think again you fucking retard because actually i specialize in machine learning or whatever the fuck theory and it is very fucking rigorous. I actually had to spend years of my life learning analysis, or abstract algebra, or other bullshit, so that I could begin my research here and I am actually looking to get a PHD in theoretical computer science which again, is very rigorous. Not only that but WE ACTUALLY MATTER. We make the world go around. Everything I code up is something real an dtangible as well which makes it superior to your mathematics because you guys are so retarded. I BET YOU WON'T EVEN GET A JOB LOL. Does anyone know that he will not get a job? GOOD. Because I will get a job inmachine learning or data science or other BS because I will have a PhD in computer science which is also very fucking applied you motherfucker and I will make so much money that I will be able to...
