What does /sci/ think about her?
She's an MIT grad and she has helped me learn some math concepts.
Do you guys think she is wicked smart? why or why not?
does she actually write characters backwards?
>>8700762
yes
and here around 7:50 is a video of her using profanity.

I hare that she shows up in the thumbnails next to every tutoring video I watch. I've never watched on of her videos but I was assuming it was some weird ASMR thing
Will we go back to the moon next year? And what kind of value does that even have for science?
Space exploration done by humans is just a waste of money and resources. Automated probes would be way better. Given the fact that we will never be able to settle on other planets.
http://time.com/4673290/nasa-moon-astronauts/
> Now, however, the moon is making headlines again. On Wednesday, NASA's acting administrator Robert Lightfoot circulated a memo to employees hinting at the possibility of flying astronauts aboard the space agency's new heavy-lift rocket and crew vehicle as early as 2018. What's more, the mission would not just be to low-Earth orbit, but to lunar orbit — coming during the 50th anniversary year of the Apollo 8 mission, when astronauts first achieved that singular exploratory feat.
> As TIME reported last month, President Trump has signaled his interest in a robust manned space program, and moon advocates like Newt Gingrich have his ear.
>>8701943
>Will we go back to the moon next year?
I hope so. I think we should have a base on the moon where astronauts stay for no longer than a year or so.
>And what kind of value does that even have for science?
A fucking shit load. Everything from building structures to medical effects to hands-on, drone resource gathering and materials refinement.
All the science gathered from doing that would help humans both on Earth and for future missions to other celestial bodies as well as general space exploration. This is the type of stuff you have to do as a stepping stone for future technology that has yet to be engineered.
>implying we went there in the first place.
>>8701948
I forgot to mention that advancements in radiation shielding to allow things like this to happen would be extraordinary.
Post questions that do not deserve their own thread
my own question:
how can you find the maximum and minimum values of functions like cos^2(x) - cos(x) using derivatives?
>>8684814
If f has a extremum on a, then [math] f'(a) = 0 [/math].
So solving [math]f'(x) = 0[/math] gives you all the points at which f can possibly reach an extremum.
>>8684814
I'm no mathematician, so I can't explain it with fancy notations
you have a function, derive it. The f'(x) you now get, you equal it to 0, which gives you stationary points, if the derivative (tangent) is 0 it means that the curve is "changing direction"
after you equal it to 0, you get a value, say pi, when x=pi then the equation = 0, right, then you just evaluate it do a "sign study" (dunno the name in english), just a table, for example
x -inf value1 0 value2 +inf
equation.1 + 0 - - -
equation.2 - - 0 + +
equation.n - 0 + 0 -
f'x + 0 0 0 +
fx up min/max up
"0" are your min max, then you take the x value that gave you 0, evaluate it in your original function and you get the y value for that x, and you can draw the graph and shit

my makeshift table got fucked up, sorry about that

Someone explain how this guy is right/wrong
>tiny shitty led creates force from massles photons to push the aluminium

seems legit..

And that's "Is the Universe deterministic", what would you do if Yes, what if No?
What do you think it is?
>>8704407
obviously it is. how is this even open for debate?
That's exactly the question that does not matter at all.
Obviously, in your day to day life it feels like there is free will.
Knowledge about this "higher truth" of whether or not the universe is or is not deterministic doesn't influence your actions.
Besides, maybe the question is ill-posed anyway, let's stop language games.
Mathsfag here, will reading this book give me the skills required to do electronics as a hobby?

Ulaby for basic Circuits
then Sedra/Smith for Microelectronics
a solution to the Riemann Hypothesis
or a solution to P vs. NP

A proof by contradiction of P vs. NP.
A proof by induction of P vs NP.

95% of the students from my uni write the conclusion paper (don't know how you call it in english) just because they must do it to finish the course, doing as little work as possible.
I still have two years to conclude my chem degree and I plan to invest a lot of time on it and really try to do a good job. Then I ask /sci/, is it possible to write an useful conclusion paper? I don't want to get a nobel prize for it but would be nice to do something other people could use.
>btw theme will be food or green chemistry.
>>8703238
If it's good enough, you can make an abridged version and try to get it published in a peer reviewed journal. I got a paper published as an undergrad.
>>8703238
>conclusion paper (don't know how you call it in english)
Dissertation? Thesis?
>>8703254
Did your teacher had anything to do with this or you just send a copy to the journal and they liked it? I have no idea on how this things work. I literally just email them a copy and they say if it will be published? Do you get any money from them?
What programs does /sci/ like to use for making figures/cartoons for papers and presentations?
>>8702725
I'm partial to GIMP because it doesn't crash my fucking laptop.
I would use inkscape if it didn't crash my laptop though.
paint
Inkscape bruh. Gimp is for autistic neckbeards.
I need some known non trivial algorithms that run in O(2^n^2) or O(2^n^4). tnx

O(2^n) is for example a recursive fibonacci, figure the rest out yourself.

Let's all rank the following fields from best to last: (in no particular order here) Chemistry, Mathematics, Physics, Engineering, Biology, Computer Science

The last one is done for you.

I tried noopept after reading that it's "the closest thing to NZT-48 xD" and that it gives you the drive and energy to effortlessly do whatever task you were procrastinating but it just does nothing for me

Anyone here go from being a bad student to being a good student?
>>8698585
no i went from an ok undergrad to a terrible grad student
yes, C's and B's in my first year to only As in years 2-4 (B+ in electives)

What do you study?
anyone here studying linguistics? i feel like its a really underrated science. i'll be starting my studies next week for it. im quite excited
Arrival really made me think to, but not THAT much.
>>8696925
hollywood doesn't decide my interests. i really liked arrival but only because i was already interested in the study of language, plus i had read the short story arrival was based on before the movie was released and it was a lot more in depth.
>>8696912
It is crucial for communication. People can think all the shit they want, but if they can't communicate it plainly, it's more useless than shit.
I studied grammar so I can communicate to intelligent people who can understand by having basic skills and common standards.
I learned words and languages to see roots of words--their true meaning.
Most people have seriously impaired reading comprehension and have difficulty focusing on more than a hundred or so letters at a time. They babble and tweet but cannot speak or listen. ADHD is epedimic.

Nice PR stunt you got there.

It's impressive how triggered you are, senpai. Perhaps sit down, take a deep breath and chill. All this tedious, impotent rage can't be good for your cholesterol encrusted arteries.

Just trying to be as triggered as they would be. Annoying isn't it? Just playing the devil.
