Why does music sound so orderly to humans?
Why do we enjoy it?
When listening to an orchestra or to a symphony, why are these random vibrations of air which are only slightly different one from the other by very small numbers of measures so pleasing to the ears?
How can our minds tell the difference from the noise of a jackhammer and the music of violins?
Why are we intuitively programmed to like an orchestra more than the sound of barking?
How come humans collective enjoy music?
How do humans even compose music?
Why has there been a natural selection of individuals who have an instinct taste for music?
Could that be a mere trivial error of genetic evolution, in such a way, should a different genome be selected, we would appreciate eating shit instead of listening to music?
I am marvelled at the ideas behind these questions.
So intriguing.

Its not random you fucking idiot do you know how many microtones exist? An infinite amount per frequency choice. Youre only hearing a small fraction limp dick westerners amalgamated into a standard known as the cuck temperment.

Redpoll me on string theory. Sources/books would be nice as I want to learn.

Learn the math first. There is no way to understand string theory better than popsci level without a proper math background.

>to understand string theory better than popsci level without a proper math background.

And by that he means at least an undergrad degree in Math to just to be able to begin learning the math required. Realistically it requires a few years more than a basic undergrad degree in Maths worth to merely get your feet wet.

>books would be nice

Polchinkski Vol.1&2 is the obvious reference, so I'll list a few others.

For a basic introduction:
http://www.damtp.cam.ac.uk/user/tong/string.html:

For a very diversified discussion (ch:2-7 intro level and chapter 8-12 higher level):
-String Theory & M-Theory by Becker,Becker,Schwarz

Go deep into physical aspects:
- Gauge/Gravity Duality by Ammon/Edmenger chapters 5-15

Go deep intro mathematical aspects:
- Mirror Symmetry by Hori et al.
- Dirichlet Branes and Mirror Symmetry by Aspinwall et al.

Is anyone else lowkey irritated by the premise of Interstellar: it'd be easier to potentially terraform an alien planet to habitability than fix our own damn planet. WTF is this crap?

It's supposed to appeal to pop-sci wannabe autists, which is a large portion of milenials thanks to all the estrogen in water bottles. They have no penises and love things that make sense if you don't think about it too hard, like communism.
>>
>>8746776
Really? That is what upset you about interstellar?

How about the bullshit philosophical interpretation of how black holes work with a little popsci quantum tossed in at the end?

At least the time dilation was accurate
>>
I'd be willing to believe it.
The amount of crap you have to deal with because other countries won't play ball is unbelievable. Be as environmentally friendly as you want, China's dumping your fair share of carbon into the air anyway and there's nothing anybody can do about it (well there is, you just have to give up cheap consumer goods)

So yeah, I would believe that it would be cheaper and more expedient to terraform another planet than it is to deal with the bureaucratic bullshit that is politics and economics.

Lets talk planes gents.

Which is better USA planes, EU planes, or Russian planes? Performance or technology?

Do not despair, just right after the death of our pathetic yet revolutionizing generation humankind will progress to such degree and make the first steps to the palaces of Heaven right here on Earth, and we will suffer to pay for their future pleasures

Are they serious about going to Mars in a decade?
9 posts and 1 images submitted.
>>
>>8746322
Of course not.
They would have to send the most ideal people, and turns out they are white . And that's racist.
Either that or prepare for Yaniqua the black jewish trans to be the first Human to step on Mars.
>>
>>8746322
No

It's too little funding. It's a gesture. If serious they would have set an aggressive date like 2021.
>>
>>8746334
Well, they won't survive which is also racist so they would revert back to sending whites.

This question may seem a bit silly but it was a thought that occurred to me.

Is there a device that emits energy at all wavelengths? Similar to a light but it has the capacity to alter the length of the waves that are emitted in order to stretch into the UV and Infra-Red spectrum?

>>8746227
I don't think it's feasible. If the device emitted, said, X-Rays, then the radio waves it would also emit would be totally masked by the the X-Ray variations.

Hey /sci/

What's the word on Prozac and SSRIs in general affecting cognition? We've heard creative types say that Prozac mutes their creativity, but what about problem solving and abstract thinking?

I can't find much on it, except that Prozac improved cognition of depressed persons. Obviously this makes sense, when you're depressed, you can't think straight.

Please do NOT make this a thread about depression or mental illness. I'm specifically looking for literature and anecdotes on SSRIs and cognition/problem solving. For example, would a person on Prozac have more or less difficulty understanding and internalizing abstract mathematical concepts?

Explain what it means to "partition the support of the (scalar) variable" like I've only taken calc 2. What is an intuitive way of understanding this?

The support of something is taking the set of points x in X where f(x) is non-zero, or equivalently, the domain of a function but without any elements that map to zero.

A scalar variable is a variable that has no direction, unlike a vector. It is equivalent to magnitude (except it typically includes negative values).

A partition is a group of sets that have nothing in common, are non-empty, and when put together cover a whole, previously defined, set. For example, the sets {1,2,4},{3,5},{7},{6} partition {1,2,3,4,5,6,7}.

Taking this all, this means that whatever your reading probably means some process is turning the support of some function that maps scalar variables into a partition.

So I wrote an encryption algorithm and I have no clue how strong it is. As with all algorithms it's maths-based and the algorithm itself is quite easy.

I'm not a mathematician or by any stretch a professional cryptographer. I just figgured it'd be fun to create a custom algorithm and see how it holds up against people trying to crack it.

>The first one to crack it will receive €20 to his paypal. I know it's little, but it's something. I guess you should do it for the fun of it or whatever.

You can download the files here: https://www.dropbox.com/s/uyn16l7ias7q2bk/challenge.zip?dl=0

The zip contains 3 files: A PDF describing the algorithm, CrackMe.cow which is the encrypted file to be cracked and secret.lock (which is also encrypted and needed to decrypt CrackMe.cow).

No, the files aren't infected with virusses... Go ahead and run a gazillion scanners on it if you want to, I really don't care.
