Why are we hardwired to reproduce and desire reproduction?
Why did evolution make us care about continuing our genetic legacy?
Why would the brain reward you for sex? Is it because it is the only way you can keep "existing", in the DNA of your offspring?
You are dumb as fuck, aren't you?
>Why are we hardwired to reproduce and desire reproduction?
>Why did evolution make us care about continuing our genetic legacy?
Because those that didn't died out very quickly.
>Why would the brain reward you for sex?
Because it leads to reproduction. Brains reward for situations that lead to long-term reproductive success, and punish for things that lead to the opposite.
This is literally the entire basis of evolution. Imagine there are 2 dogs:
Dog 1 doesn't want to mate, and so has no young
Dog 2 does want to mate and does so often, leaving many pups
And so, because dog 2 had so many young, the dog population will be more similar to dog 2 than 1. Repeat this process for millions of years and that's evolution.
What are some good scientific youtube channels I can productively procrastinate on by watching hours and hours and still manage to learn something useful?

I like some of the "3Blue1Brown" videos:

This guy is alright, it's definitely more /sci/ than most of the other popsci youtubers that never mention any math.

Is any math beyond calculus even useful?

Are physics majors butthurt that they didn't go into mathematics instead?
Yes, Optimal Control is useful and you need very advanced math including nonlinear functional analysis to fully understand it.
Why is /sci/ so hostile towards medicine? Care to elaborate

In my country there are no "pre-meds" LEL

Stories about other people getting caught cheating on exams/projects? Epic cheating schemes?
I TA an undergraduate programming class. Just busted a freshman for cheating on an assignment
>>8761205
> Computer architecture class
> Freshman students write address book program for one project
> Implemented in assembly for ARM architecture
> GitHub repo surfaces from past student with lots of relevant code snippets
> Professor knows, warns students again in lecture about using other peoples' code
> Students have already agreed to college of engineering penalties for plagiarism and cheating
> Still catch 5 students with same code from repo
> Can't explain why
> Forwarded to college academic disciplinary board
> O shit
Happens multiple times a year
pretty bad if you have to cheat in a programming class.
>Be going to community college.
>Dunno what's going on. Decide to get associates of arts (AHAHAHAHA).
>Love it! Learning is FUN! YAY humanities!
>Hate math! Grr math! Hard!
One semester later.
>Fuck humanities!
>Yay math! Yay science! Stuff I can actually know for sure!
I just don't find my humanities courses to be a challenging or interesting anymore.
If any of you guys have some advice on how I can go about finding a niche I'd appreciate it.
Engineering is cool, but I can't tell if I'm just motivated purely by the money that the field presents.
Pure math is cool, but I'm afraid it's useless outside of mental masturbation with you guys.
Help.
Pic funny but not related.
I should note that I'm going to probably have large chunks of the week open during the summer. So I'll have time to do stuff you guys tell me would be beneficial.
Why not do it for the money? Don't listen to all the poor people on here saying "don't do it for the money you're not contributing anything" just do what you know is best for you.
>>8778964
Well, I have genuine interest in math, it's just that I'm not sure I care about electrical engineering.
I care about transhumanist stuff(another topic) but I'm afraid that market will soon be flooded based on the explosion of people seeking information on the topic.
I thought it would be good to major in a highly technical thing like electrical engineering and then attempt to branch into neurophresthesis or whatever when it becomes a thing.
How can yuropoors even compete?
i don't know
any time i read about schools in the newspaper it's how kids complain about too much work
and they always have their way - this in western europe
eastern europe is poor and their education systems aren't efficient
meanwhile asian countries excel and push their children to learn - see i'm not a racist, i think whites can be just as good, we have better infrastructure and conditions on top of that
i see these kids on the street, and i think we need to focus more on learning and discipline in schools
nobody gives a shit about them though, people are more concerned with less consequential things, in my opinion at least
kids need help, and a real change must happen in our attitude towards children and their education process - i don't think they are achieving their full potential and i feel sad

What is the field of mathematics that goes deep in foundations of mathematics like this book does?
anything pertaining to discrete math, analysis, real analysis...
I mean you can go deep pretty much anywhere. What specifically interests you?
>>8776338
Pajeets are just not meant for deep mathematics.
>inb4 Ramanujan
He's the exception that proves the rule.
>>8777425
The very foundation of real numbers, algorithms that make the basis of mathematics, just like what this book does. Is there a field of mathematics just for that?
How does someone turn into a top student in a STEM degree?
>>8776130
you care about the subject more than anyone else in your school to the point of obsession. you're always, always thinking about it.
that's the main ingredient. add a dollop of insanity so you're just on the line between sanity and insanity and you'll be a great scientist or engineer, let alone a top student.
>>8776130
Genetics.
If you weren't at the top of your class from kindergarten to high school you can't succeed in STEM because you're stupid, or you just lack discipline which by college age you are to old to learn.
>>8776145
that's wrong. i've aced classes that i gave zero fucks about.

We all know that climate change is happening. Several deniers in multitudes of previous threads have been constantly BTFO.
However what do you guys think of scientists march for climate change? Should scientists really take to the street and march for a particular policy?
>the "debate" is over
this is quite literally not how science works
you don't just get to say 'muh theory is unquestionable'
>>8775144
>However what do you guys think of scientists march for climate change? Should scientists really take to the street and march for a particular policy?
I hate politics with utmost vigour but this seems to be neccesary. The consequences of not making immedeate change in climate policy will be disasterous and scientists should step in.

Would humanity survive if the sun died?
>>8777383
No, it would die out eventually. Some will live on for a short while if they happened to be in really good situations where they can use power sources from something else to create enough light and heat to farm and survive.
As it stands right now, there's no infrastructure for such an event. If properly planned and executed, such a thing is possible.
This of course is for if the sun died but didn't expand or blow up. It just went out like a light bulb getting turned off or something.
How about a better scenario? "Something" happens to pull the Earth out of orbit with the sun where it becomes a rogue planet.
>>8777383
Yes, but it will be really painful.
eventually the planet would run out of energy. No sun means no plants, no plants means no animals. It would be a slow yet painful death
