Has mathematical theorem ever been found wrong after it has been accepted by the mathematical community? Let's start counting from years of Pythagoras (~500 B.C.)

>fake proof in 1933
>another fake proof in 1942
>counterexample found in 1948

>Some days later I was with Artin in his office when Wang appeared. He said he had a counterexample to a lemma which had been used in the proof. An hour or two later, he produced a counterexample to the theorem itself... Of course he [Artin] was astonished, as were all of us students, that a famous theorem with two published proofs, one of which we had all heard in the seminar without our noticing anything, could be wrong. - John Tate

Euler's Sum of Primes conjecture was believed by a majority of mathematicians until a counterexample was found in the 1950's.

stop seeing math as this archaic notation game perpetuated as something only very smart people are capable of.
dont look at the problems you see on /sci/ and on high university entrance exams and say "shit, im so dumb", and then hurt yourself emotionally

Dont think of math as a subject, that has only specific things to it. You're ruining the beauty.

Math is essentially anything that you can give structure and information to visually and logicallly.

Math is adventure into imagination and solving your own little arguments you've applied to things.
Let's try.

>Okay, so how long does it take to finish a tissue roll on a set volume, depending on the thickness of the tissue?
>Okay, we'll we know its a spiral, and it layers on each other.
>or fuck that, lets just appropriate to circles and test the relationship.

And just through fuckin about, I probably found and interesting relation or special cute equation involving sine functions and width of paper.

Maybe I can't even solve this problem, which means I have to look for more math tools, maybe calculus, or perhaps vector labelling will help me sort it out more.

You simply think of the most weird shit if you want to and if it interest you, and ONLY IF it interest you, play around with it.

It's literally having questions about real things, non existant things, heck maybe the size of pepe's lips compared to his face interest you.

It's just that we can use logic and thinking creatively to solve anything we want to and the challenge and retrieval of the answer, gives us the drive of fun and satisfies basic human curiosity.

You're not gonna get rich day trading

This guy is a PhD from Cambridge and wrote a 3 part series how to teach yourself math for doing Quant trading https://www.quantstart.com/articles/How-to-Learn-Advanced-Mathematics-Without-Heading-to-University-Part-1

Btw you never, ever want to waste money day trading or buying individual stocks. Imagine a hundred thousands machines all doing high-freq trading, TRADING ON UNKNOWN INFORMATION in terms of market release (because they're so fast), with the ability to react instantly to any situation because they're filled with machine learning AI algorithms designed by experienced quants and traders over decades.

All you can hope for is to put your money in a Vanguard index fund, but the bitcoin/cryptocurrency world is wide open to wallstreet type manipulation for low risk options
>>
>>8788091
Consider the following OP

You are a 4chan autist who wants to learn to trade

80 of all volume of trading is done by large banks, hedge funds, and professional firms. When you buy a stock, you are doing so because it will go up. When you sell it, you are doing so because you believe it will go down. Somebody has to buy from you or sell that stock to you, therefore for every move you make, sombody is betting ON YOUR FAILURE.

We've established that 80% of market trading is professional. Therefore, 4/5 trades you make will be against somebody whose job it is to succeed on the stock market. Whose judgement do you trust more? Yours, or a giant institution with super computers at their disposal?

Its not a meme to say here the only winning move is not to play. Quite literally, the most mathematically logical move is not to trade, or at least to always trade the exact opposite of what you believe will happen.

Scientifically speaking, how many cigarettes/ day can you smoke safely? That is, at what number and below are the risks of adverse health effects not statistically significant? Almost every study deals with muh pack a day smoker.
33 posts and 2 images submitted.

Any amount of cigarettes daily is statistically significant enough to cause harm.

Any amount of cigarettes per week is also statistically significant enough to cause harm.

How much harm? that is relative, but unless it is a cigar once a year you're fucking your body over one puff at a time.

Think of your body like a self repairing machine that can only repair itself slower and slower. You can smoke a shit-ton when you are young, but when you get older you will be fucked.

I have seen so many old fucks in their 50's on oxygen, it's not worth it. After smoking for 15 years, I wanted to have children, and I couldn't dream of smoking around them. This was enough for me to quit.

You can only quit if you want to, and you can't just quit, you have to keep quitting until you only need one cig a day. If you are trying to stratagize about how many cigs you can get away with, you are still addicted.

The first week will be hell on earth. The second week you will get cravings, but as time goes on the cravings get less and less intense until you don't even care.

I still have dreams of smoking cigs, I don't think you can ever cure the addiction. It's there forever.

Do we live in a simulation, /sci/?

How could we test for it?

If we do, how do we make sure that whoever is not simulating us doesn't kill us prematurely and extends our lifespans inside of the simulation?

is it true that some people just can't do math well. i have been told i am bright but i have never really enjoyed or been all to good at math (thou i haven't really tried all too much). i went to a psychologist as a kid and he told me i had a high verbal iq but low processing speed and therefore would be very good at things like reading and understanding but not so good at math. is that all whooey as i recently have taken an interest in math. is it just that i haven't tried hard enough. are some people just not made for math

Suppose such a set A exists. Since A is a set, its complement C is a set. If C contains itself, then it can not be a set*, and then A is not a set, so C must be in A. Similarly, every set in C must be in A, but C is a complement of A, so C must be empty. Now A consists of all sets, and thus contains itself contradicting its own definition. Such a set, therefore, does not exist.

*follows from
>Foundation (Regularity): Each nonempty class is disjoint from one of its elements.
