Friend of mine doing her dissertation and I said I'd help with her stats because I do maths. My question is: Suppose we have two variables for example: a economic index and a secularity index and we want to find which is the best predictor for happiness. How do we find this? My guess is that you assume that the two indexes are independent then use a regression model? How do I know that they are independent though? They are uncorrelated but that doesn't always imply independece

Idk, but you shouldn't have said you'd help her if you can't do it.

What can /sci/ tell me about genetics/ancestry type tests? Are such tests accurate? Which company do you prefer? I asked an anthropology Prof. at my school and he recommended "23 And Me". I'd really like to try and find out since my ancestry past 3 or four generations is really something of a mystery.

Also discuss or post your results here if you've already taken one.

I want to take one. 23 and me seems quite popular and good, but I kinda want my whole genome sequenced and not just popular SNPs.
>>
>>8840098
so 23 and me doesn't give you that information?
>>
It's good if you have predominantly European ancestry. The level of detail for the Native American ancestry side of things is ridiculously board. It literally just says if your ancestors were from N or S America. I mean, I get why it's like that, since they don't study those groups as much, but just a word of warning to those who might be thinking of buying a test. Since I'm a geneticist I was thinking of getting a test and asking for the raw SNP data so I can comb through it myself, but if you're a layperson I'd say to wait a few years until something better comes along.

When I study mathematics for most of the day I see interesting hypnagogic imageries when I lay down for sleeping.
Unfortunately I cannot make up the details of the pages on my book.
What if I bumped like to 15 hours a day for a month?
Has any braniac here on /sci/ noticing better visualization abilities?

/sci/ seems to be full of nihilists, but they seem to lean on the "life sucks, you die, get over it" side more than the typical transhumanist sort of nihilism.

Now hold the fuck up. I'll atleast try an create genetic "drugs"(mechs also) that thru the years could expand lifetimes and vitality(long ways away).

Why would a priest be worried about transhumanism anyway? Wouldn't it be some sort of crime against nature or whatever? Also don't you believe in heaven?'

Why is China systematically recreating every step of the Soviet space program from 50 years ago? They've done Sputnik, Soyuz and Salyut and now they're moving on to Mir.

That's their second space station isn't it? NASA shut them out of all their programs so they have to learn on their own and through espionage.
>>
>>8842853
They have two models that are proven ways of getting from where they were to where they want to be. The Soviet path, and the US path. Soviet society resembled the Chinese system more than the US path. Seems reasonable that they would look at following that path.

Also, taking the Moon race out of it, it is a series of obvious steps to progress with space program. What the fuck other path would make more sense?

At this rate China's going to be testing Buran and Energia around the time the first city on Mars is completed

If it is not reviewed by alien scientists it is shit. Even if aliens review it it will still be shit but just a bit less. You need to get attention of the Creator or universe to review it and tell you if it valid, reliable. But other dimension Creators may not agree with your papers so I would try to get into contact with interdimensional beings so they can redirect you to the Creator with the most experience in dimensional peer reviewing. That may give you an itch of objectivity. Otherwise do not bother.

IPCC is under NASA, and was caught manipulating data in the early 2000s.
Climate change is not primarily anthropogenic.

Reminder that "STEM" is a marketing term designed to get young people to pursue difficult careers for bad pay.

I agree, but with the caveat that it has some well paying jobs too.

I also reject the impliciation that difficult = bad. There's no gain in your mentioning that it's difficult, to make your point.
>>
>>8842500
Difficult jobs that pay well are fine. Most "STEM" careers have poor employment and pay prospects despite being very mentally demanding, however.

Are 15-year-olds sudents happy in your country?

>Schools are not just places where students acquire academic skills; they also help students become more resilient in the face of adversity, feel more connected with the people around them, and aim higher in their aspirations for their future
>Not least, schools are the first place where children experience society in all its facets, and those experiences can have a profound influence on students’ attitudes and behaviour in life
>PISA is best known for its data on learning outcomes, but it also studies students’ satisfaction with life, their relationships with peers, teachers and parents, and how they spend their time outside of school
>PISA results show that students differ greatly, both between and within countries, in how satisfied they are with their life, their motivation to achieve, how anxious they feel about their schoolwork, their expectations for the future, and their perceptions of being bullied at school or treated unfairly by their teachers
>Students in some of the countries that top the PISA league tables in science and mathematics reported comparatively low satisfaction with life;
>but Finland, the Netherlands and Switzerland seem able to combine good learning outcomes with highly satisfied students
>It is tempting to equate low levels of life satisfaction among students in East Asia or elsewhere to long study hours, but the data show no relationship between the time students spend studying, whether in or outside of school, and their satisfaction with life
>There are other factors that make a difference to student well-being, and much comes down to teachers, parents and schools.
>The findings from PISA show how teachers, schools and parents can make a real difference
>Together they can attend to students’ psychological and social needs and help them develop a sense of control over their future and the resilience they need to be successful in life.
