At some point we didn't exist. Individually speaking. We weren't alive. Then we were conceived and brought into life. Then we die and are basically at the state of before we were born again.

Is there a chance that we can somehow be brought into existence again? After all it happened once

Sounds like wishful thinking. I doubt your exact self would ever come into existence more than once because of the role of quantum randomness in the brain's development.

Don't know if this is the right place for this question

I'm doing a project on its application in Australia as a replacement for traditional coal and gas plants. I'm an advocate for renewable energy, but I think there should be a mix between that and nuclear power. Is this the correct outlook?

I've raised this issue to my colleagues and their main arguments against boil down to:

- Nuclear waste
- Put all the money towards renewables
- The danger of nuclear reactors (chernobyl etc)

Is there basis to these arguments?

>>
>Is this the correct outlook?
It's an outlook, it doesn't need to be correct. Just keep dropping your flawed opinions as you go, develop the ones that seem to work. For the record, I agree with you.

>Nuclear waste
The biggest issue on this list, but not a huge one by any stretch because of several factors. The output of toxic waste by reactors is minuscule compared to the output of toxic waste by refineries/bleaching facilities/anything industrial involving chemicals. The only difference is they tend to last longer, be far more dangerous to local wildlife, and need to be kept under far more stringent guard. As long as they're responsibly contained and buried, and the location of the toxic waste burial site is available immediately to all echelons of government, this problem disappears over a few hundred years.

Also there's a lot of work being done on finding uses for nuclear waste, or at least mitigating it's effect. Here are some papers to back me up: http://arxiv.org:443/find/all/1/AND+ti:+AND+nuclear+waste+abs:+AND+nuclear+waste/0/1/0/all/0/1

>Put all the money towards renewables
Why? What money? Funding is hard enough to come by, let's use this useful, clean, cheap energy while we can, the fuck else are we going to use uranium for apart from lethal medical tracers and over-the-top smoke detectors?

>The danger of nuclear reactors (chernobyl etc)
Ahahahah no. Chernobyl was by far the worst because of poor Soviet management. You can't even blame the scientists or managers at the plant, they were brave and industrious to the end by all accounts. The danger came when poor planning met with experimental technology - they tried to safety test the control rods and accidentally short-circuited them because graphite conducts electricity. Besides, the region is well under control now. Provided regulations are stringent, you're safe. Plus a lot of the negative stigma is media-driven. Even the worst nuclear disasters have nothing on a natural disaster.

In the US the future is bleak for nuclear right now. The major issue is economic, building a nuclear power plant takes many year before any ROI can be expected.

Compare this to shale gas with the new drilling technologies developed over the last ~15 years. Much cheaper start-up, quicker ROI, lots of untapped resources, and congress is certainly pro-fracking, but slashed the DOE budget for nuclear fusion significantly last week.

Avoid Japanese green tea, it has a lot of caffeine.

Can someone explain to me the physics behind why thin road bike tyres can be rated for much higher maximum tyre pressures than thick mountain bike tyres?
16 posts and 1 images submitted.
>>
>>8888274
Stiffness/Rigidness.

Road cyclists generally only encounter flat terrain, so the tyres generally do not have to withstand impacts/changing surfaces. Hence, to maximise energy transfer to the road, the wheels are inflated as much as possible. (More rigid tire = smaller surface area to road)

Mountain bikes generally experience multiple uneven surfaces and impacts. If the tires were under great pressure from internal air, an impact could have a catastrophic effect and burst the tire. Additionally, the tires must have some amount of 'give' to allow for the changing stiffness of the terrain below them.

Thanks, but i was asking about max pressure rating of a tyre, not optimal pressure for riding conditions.

Simple business. If there are only 100 people in the world with a certain disease it would be unprofitable to make truly effective medicine, let alone a cure for it. Not saying that it's a big conspiracy to keep people ill but it just so happens to work out that way.

SO

Every so often elderly mom's house gets broken into by someone picking the lock. Stuff has gone missing, house gets re-arranged with nothing missing, typical cowardly terrorist actions.

Latest thing - blood poured on floor. Not hers, not mine, not her pet's. No injuries to any of us.

Can DNA be taken to ID who or what it came out of?

Have a picture of some of the huge meth bags the dealers and users leave on elderly mom's front step.

Does anyone else feel obsessed with grades? Having had several internships and worked on research under a prof, I am fully aware that grades are not everything. But semester after semester I find myself obsessively calculating my grades before they're in. I know grades aren't a measure of intelligence, but if I ever get a bad grade I feel like its proof that I'm stupid.

what do you consider a bad grade? in math it should be hard for you to get a low grade considering your grade is mostly homework, i managed to never get anything less than an A- and I'm a brainlet
>>
>>8887606

Grades aren't everything, but if you want good grad school placement you better make sure you don't dip under 3.8 at a top school or 4.0 at a state school.
>>
>>8887609
I have never gotten anything less than an A- as my overall class grade either. I mean grades on individual tests/projects. It feels like getting punched in the face to receive a test score of 70 or less.

>>8887614
I have very close to a 4.0 (3.9 something), at a state school. Do I still have a chance for top applied/computational schools?

So, ive been thinking long and hard about this for several years now. But ive come to a conclusion... When you cut a worm in half it will turn into two worms, then if you cut those two worms into two other worms then cut those worms they would turn into another worm. If some evil mastermind found out about this they could make this a continuous cycle from then would turn into the destruction of the planet since the worms would eat all the dirt from the crust and be so powerful from those nutrients that they would be able to self destruct and destroy the planet Earth, then sending all that debri into space along with those worms that have been turn into several other pieces then going onto other planets and repeating the cycle for all eternity.

So this is a little bit of an unusual thread I imagine. I'm not a frequent of /sci/ but just had an idea in regards to reducing street pollution in urban areas and wanted to consult your thoughts on the idea.
The idea is quite simple. Urban areas are seeing ever growing and record high amounts of street pollution and green plants are known to reduce this pollution. Sadly in a lot of urban areas already built up not much space is available to insert new plant beds but there are always every so many metres apart a street light. Would encouraging a plant which can track up vertical surfaces such as ivy offer a good method of lowering pollution as the lights will act as a canvas for the plant to grow and interjecting the otherwise bland concrete area with much needed greenery. Of course there are factors to consider such as the ability to grow up the metal light structure, whether it would pose major risk to the lights integrity and if the ivy or said plant could feasibly survive and thrive in that basic environment as well as management of ensuring the plant doesn't obscure the light as well - the sole purpose of it being their in the first place.

Like I said just wondering what your opinions and thoughts on the concept are.

>it would pose major risk to the lights integrity
>>
Somebody would need to go around and trim them all the time to make sure they didn't cover the light itself, and the root structure might break up the cement. Overall not a bad idea though
>>
>>8887477
Not a bad idea, but you'd need to find cities with the extra budget to plant them. Also, what >>8887518 said. It'd mean having an extra part timer on the city's payroll (or at least extra hours for a maintenance worker).
