ITT: stories involving TAs
>TA in algebra
>hand-in asks you to state and prove lagrange's theorem
>one student writes "... since the cosets divide G up into n parts .."
>put a cross next to that piece to indicate that's not exactly what's going on
>proof was okay otherwise
>still gave him full marks on that one because without the full marks he'd have failed the hand-in
>after the corrected hand-ins are handed out, he comes back to me to complain about exactly that
>tell him how he needs to think about in terms of equivalence relations and cells
>he says we're both right and that he'd write his version on the exam
>let it go
Man, I really wanna help these people, but this fucking cunt reeee
>>8910888
an equivalence relation is the same as a partition you brainlet
>>8910904
Yes, it defines a partition of G into n cells. He should be able to formulate himself properly. This isn't middle school anymore.
>>8910888
You were just being pedantic.
>sit in on signal processing class to see how much of a joke engineering classes are
>professor says Dirac Delta "function"
Isn't it a function though?
>>8910451
That's right OP. Engineers are too busy doing useful things and solving real-world problems to get caught up on your horseshit semantics. Now get the fuck off the floor, the library's closing and you can't sleep here.

ITT: We share stupid technological ideas that we've come up with.
Other people will then explain why your idea is stupid.
I'll start.
>find area of ground that's above sea level and surrounded by higher ground
>pump in a shitload of water
>build aqueducts at the minimum slope to an area with lower ground, and turbines at the end of the aqueduct
>when solar and wind are producing more energy than the grid is consuming, use the power to pump more water from the ocean or nearby rivers up into the basin
>when the grid is consuming more energy than wind and solar are producing, drain water from the basin into turbines to generate more electricity
>in effect, turn geological features into giant batteries, without needing to shell out for anything other than piping and machinery
>>8910233
>describes tech that already exists
>passes it off as his idea
>>8910233
That kickstarter that kept getting spammed here a couple of years back, its was supposedly using Tesla's lost technology to deliver wireless energy. Needless to say it stopped being spammed about the same time they did the large scale demonstration.
>The skeptical /sci/entist wins again.
>>8910238
>google it
>people are using artificial reservoirs instead of natural geological formations or existing dams
but why
What are your thoughts on meat consumption?
>On the way that I'm thinking, it seems that the massive production of meat for our needs is, from an evolutionary standpoint, advantageous for the prey as the species is being perpetuated thanks to our actions.
>>8909362
who are you quoting?
>>8909374
that's just me
Meat is yummy.
We eat far too much of it though. Need to cut back in order for food production to be more sustainable.
>successfully tricked my body into thinking it slept
Holy shit /sci/ what do
>>8908521
share your knowledge with us
how does such tricking work?
>>8908542
I honestly don't know.
My head is buzzing right now, it feels like every neuron is firing all at once.
About to see if I can learn some advanced mathematics.
>>8908560
How do you know that you tricked your body, and it's not your brain tricking you into thinking you tricked your body?

People where you live," the little prince said, "grow five thousand roses in one garden... yet they don't find what they're looking for...
They don't find it," I answered.
And yet what they're looking for could be found in a single rose, or a little water..."
Of course," I answered.
And the little prince added, "But eyes are blind. You have to look with the heart."
Will trying DMT ruin my academic career?
>>8905521
Naw it'll be great
You'll drop what youre studying instantly after realizing youre it and you can do fuck all
>>8905620
Man this is so real. Realizing you are just a walking structure of mathematical inquiry kills me
Post your best ones

Those videos are actually rather good though.
>be in a biotechnology group about designing a factory for cleaning using algae in waste water to produce biodiesel
>only none brainlet in the group
>brainlets take tons of responsibility everyday and have nothing worthwhile to show for it the next day
>one day left to hand in the project
>tell everyone that I'll finish the project myself
>They tell me that I can't possibly do it myself
>tell them we will fail unless I do it
>fuck off home and delete everything they wrote
>8 hours later the project is done
>brainlets ask to correct it
>They convert it from word to pdf and send it without my approval
>look at the pdf afterwards and find text is unreadable in one of the flowcharts because of the margins of the pdf
>tfw they fucked up the only thing I trusted them to do
>have to present the project
>I answer all the questions posed by the professor
>he tells me that he wants to ask the others now
>he asks them if biodiesel is a high value product or a low value product
>They can't answer
>he asks them the limitations of using hexane to dissolve the lipids are
>They can't answer
>professor finally says that the project was good enough and somewhat close to what the other groups did (their projects were way better and they had worked for 2 weeks on their projects while I had to do it one day)
>brainlets bad mouth the professor after the presentation
How do I control these fucks?
This is the 4th semester. They've failed multiple classes but I still fear there's a chance they'll get their degree.
>>8914043
>only none brainlet in the group
are you sure?
>>8914117
I'm the only one who has passed all the classes and can answer questions and shit.
The professors always look at me when they're talking.
Clearly they know I'm the only one worth a rat's ass.

Is that movie good?
How many diagonal rectangles are there in an 8x8 chessboard such that each square does not share a row or column with any other of the 3 squares?
The picture has some examples of valid rectangles.
I got 75 rectangles, but am curious what other people got and how you approached it. I will show my work if you would like.
Question modified by Elements of Discrete Mathematics, 3.35 - CL Liu. I purchased the book from a used book store and have been working through problems in my free time.
>>8913281
Could you clarify what you mean by each square does not share a row or column with any other of the 3 squares?
>>8913289
Sure, for example if you pick the filled in square in the picture, then the squares with lines in them cannot be picked to complete the diagonal rectangle
>>8913299
Thanks. Can I pick say G8H7? Thats at the border, and the red lines that you drew for first picture would be out of bounds. Is that allowed?
What does sci think of a Biotech major with a 3.1 going into his senior year
>>8913259
Biotech is a meme. 3.1 is pitiful. Good luck getting into grad school.
>>8913264
Have fun being an academic your whole life
Have fun with your genetically modified yeast spewing out death in your face.
hi /sci/ i am going for a masters in computer science
i don't particularly enjoy maths but i'm competent enough up to calc II
have i fallen for the meme?
>>8913091
>i'm competent enough up to calc II
[math]Yes[/math]
yes, u have fallen
Do you think rudimentary math predates spoken language?
>>8912656
Yes. You don't need language to be able to count. Even some animals can count, like crows.
>>8912656
No, the Pirahã tribe was not able to learn how to understand what 1+1 is or how to count until they switched to Portuguese for trade. Their language has no concept of quantity and they were unable to understand it due to that.
>>8912701
wow, waht a bunch of retards
How are the PhD prospects in Math and Physics in the USA? I'm a third-worlder (Brazil) and I want to escape from this shithole. I'm also a semi degenerate gambler and my income comes mainly from poker, backgammon, pool, bridge and sports betting. So it would be pretty cool to work in something related to statistics/probability and game theory (or thepretical physics) . As a third-worlder it is easier for me to join in a PhD program in Math or Physics in America? And which PhD offers better prospect AFTER its conclusion?
P.S.: what are some good universities close to Las Vegas and Atlantic City?
SOPA DE MACACO
give up.
Unless you're really good you should just give up, and if you were actually good you would not be posting your question because there would be no need for it.
There's no good university close to Las Vegas. Closest is probably UCLA or something
The most intelligent neanderthal in the world is making $300 a month.
The Russian TV accompanied him: https://krautchan.net/files/1494881298001.webm
What the fuck is the point of this thread?
>>8912346
That's exactly how much I make a month. Only I'm a land owner so most of it goes to property taxes and home/vehicle insurance.
