How the FUCK does one understand Combinatorics? Any tips/resources on mastering this pesky subject?
You don't.
taking it next sem. what am i in for?
just gotta get a feel for it

sorry meant "thoughts on through the wormhole with morgan freeman"
meh. I don't particularly like pop-sci. Also, while the show is supposed to be about physics, there's a whole episode dealing with IQ and race, which is clearly there for political reasons.

God can't play dice if he doesn't exist

Yes, God plays chess.

Why are kids cute and appealling to adults?
Because they need to be cared for.
>>8932922
Part II:
Why do animal kids/litter is cute and appealing when people assume animals have no soul and no greater thinking?
>>8932945
because animals don't care what dumb people assume about them
Is it true that we could make the population way smarter over 200 years with embryo selection? Nick Bostrom thinks it is realistic. Based Richard Lynn says we could raise the average IQ to 200.
Imagine a society with no brainlets.

>imagine a society with no brainlets.
How are you going to get the brainlets to stop breeding?
>>8932587
Tax brainlets instead of subsidizing them
>>8932598
>implying brainlets have anything to tax.
Until you figure out how to tax fucking, you're not stopping them.
How small does matter get? For example, what exactly is a quark made up of?
>>8932299
fishing wire
>>8932299
They're fundamental, so structureless.
>>8932308
That doesn't quite make sense. If you were to get an ultra super zoom microscope that was capable of seeing smaller than a quark, what would you see?
So /sci/, what's the best smell in your lab? What's the worst? Honourable mentions?
Pic unrelated
>Best
SDS gel destain solution
>Worst
TEMED
>Honourable mentions
I quite like the smell of concentrated HCl
>>8932017
Styrene and Benzene is mesmerising
I was carrying maple syrup and a roll of solder in my backpack and the maple syrup jar broke. The EE lab smelled like pancakes every time I used the syrup solder.

Whatever food people bring in

Since the universe is expanding and contains everything, what is it expanding into?
Does it even matter if we can't get anywhere near the current boundary?
Nothingness and everything.
>>8931933
It's not physically expanding, distance is getting larger
Now that that's out of the way, it's time for another very important study:
Are these genes more prevalent in some races than in others?
Also, can we get an honest scientist, perhaps someone Pioneer funded, to do the study? If we let the leftists do it, they'll "neglect" to exclude unrepresentative blacks (such as those with IQs above 110) and game the study up.
what definition of intelligence do they use?
>>8931686
#1 yeah probably given the results of the bell curve study, as g seems to be so genetic that there must be some hereditary difference between races
#2 whats the fucking point of studying this? Say you find out "yes, blacks are intellectually inferior on average, though obviously some can be smart", what's the damn point. We're not going to treat them any differently on a societal level. We're not going to stop breeding with them. We're not going to take away their rights. We're not going to send them somewhere else. We're not going to give them separate education facilities, so what is the fucking point? Pretend it isn't real and just encourage your children to marry asians since they appear to be the smartest. No need to add to the already tense racial relations problem.
A deck has 2 types of cards. [Mana](http://gatherer.wizards.com/Handlers/Image.ashx?multiverseid=368500&type=card) cards and [Spell]
(http://gatherer.wizards.com/Handlers/Image.ashx?multiverseid=383413&type=card) cards. The first player draws 7 and the second player draws 8. Each player then draws 1 card at the beginning of their next turn. Only 1 mana card is allowed to be played per turn. Each mana card produces 1 mana for that turn. The number of mana cards in play is each players mana total for that turn.
If a deck has 60 cards, with 24 mana cards, what is the ideal mana curve (distribution) to maximize mana spent if the highest costed card is 6 mana?
>>8931287
just slap together a monte carlo simulation to solve this, it's way easier and much more useful
because then in 1 second you can find out how it changes when you have 23 mana cards
or you can improve upon it by accounting for llanowar elves and birds of paradise, dark ritual, black lotus, etc
Thank you for the reply, kind citizen!
Unfortunately, I am at a pre-algebra level. Perhaps this image of flowchart Ken will provide a visual representation of my ability to perform your recommended Monte Carlo simulation.
A Mathematician's Lament: https://www.maa.org/external_archive/devlin/LockhartsLament.pdf
The lament laments how maths are not taught in school - or universities, probably - and that a perverse mockery of it is taught instead.
Do you know any math books that fall somewhat within Lockhart's ideals?
>le math is beatiful and interesting meme
sure, there is some level of creativity involed later on
but if you can't follow highschool level stuff you will never get it anyway
>>8930857
Basically this, teaching math to people who can't get past highschool basic trivialties is like teaching to draw to people with tetraplegia, there is no point if you can't even hold the pen.
I read the entire thing.
I'm just glad this guy's not in control of mathematics education.

What would "Geometry" be in second grade? Literally just Trianglez n' shieet?
"Scientists" (read: murderers) will justify this.
>At 507 years old, Ming the clam lived a lengthy, if somewhat unremarkable, life. However, he could have lived even longer if scientists hadn't discovered him. Unfortunately, their calculations of Ming's age weren't possible without cracking open the clam's shell, so researchers didn't realize they were in possession of what was likely the world's oldest living animal – until they had already killed it.

Did /sci/ see this woman yet? I'm not smart and don't know much about math, can any math people her tell me if shes talking out of her ass in her thesis?

i have really struggled with whether and how to respond to this. The execution of this message was very nice and respectful, and I genuinely appreciate that. The premise, however, is problematic. Maybe not inherently, but within the context of the sexist society we live in. Men are allowed, and often feel compelled, to think out loud at women, to share unsolicited not necessarily informed thoughts at women. (And usually these men, unlike you, don’t even seem to recognize that their thoughts may not be useful.) Women on the other hand aren’t allowed to be as open. So, if you want to not just be respectful, but actually be anti-oppression, it is better (IMO) not to respond to a woman’s work with the types of thoughts that other men pawn off as insights, if you know what i mean. again, i appreciate your honesty, but i feel obligated to point these things out.
