My physics professor was able to find the sine of 6 degrees in less than half a minute. How exactly is this motherfucker doing that?

I have to pull out my TI-83 for anything not on the unit circle.

I don't literally take out a printed copy of the unit circle, I have it all memorized in my head if that's what you're talking about.

If you think I'm retarded for not knowing much more past that then yes, I am retarded.

H-how do we make maths beautiful?

But that's wrong retards. Also as a general rule [eqn] Attractiveness \propto \frac { 1 } { Weight } [/eqn] Obviously there's some subtleties with it.

It already is, if you don't appreciate it then you probably don't understand it.

So I'm fucked up with a high fever, sore throat and flu. I feel extremely weak and I've been in bed for the last 2 days. Can /sci/ recommend some cures or remedies to alleviate the pain?

I still cannot understand why science has not prioritized to cure colds and flus once and for all...

How does one create "good" music? Is there a science behind this?
13 posts and 1 images submitted.
>>
My personal method : I start with chord progressions. Naturally some chords flow smoothly from one to another better than others. Basically following the diatonic scale and the circle of fourth/fifths. More so than that there are major/minor tonalities, which mix together to form joy or sadness. I come up with a pattern I want to express and then work around that.
>>
>Is there a science behind this?

Yes, it's called music theory.
>>
>>8989432
patterns and copying what people are used to hearing. certain chords and sounds are designated "music" because they're used so often, so people automatically associate them with music.

STEMs of sci, tell me the mental and physiological effects of snorting instant mix lemonade??

The one i snorted was peach flavored if it makes a difference.

I'm seeing zig-zags moving across my vision and i have pain behind my eyes and in my nose.

Also everything smells like peach but i think thats to be expected..

What are the implications of the Flynn effect for the relation between genetics and IQ? I've always understood that IQ is primarily genetic and difficult to change, but if the Flynn effect shows that environmental factors like improved nutrition and education can cause such a rapid increase over a relatively short period of time, then does this mean that IQ is to a large extent environmental? Doesn't this show that any group could rapidly raise its IQ in the matter of a few generations given an improved environment more conducive to intellectual growth? What am I missing here?

>>
I believe you're missing the Flynn effect.
>>
>>8988656
1.50% of variance in intelligence is explainable by genes
2.flynn effect comes in - probably works on environmental factors
3.it shows A group can rapidly raise its IQ, not any group

some groups can, some can't
i'd say most can, most can't
african and australian max is somewhere in the 80's (maoris excluded)
most others are 90+

Nutrition affects IQ tests drastically, and I'm not talking nutrition in terms of how your brain developed based on the food you got as a child - I'm talking about what you ate for breakfast the morning of the IQ test, or how long after lunch it was when you had it administered. A 20 to 30+ point drift from such factors is considered the norm.

IQ tests only check for the ability to recognize patterns and memorize numbers. The more you practice those two things in daily life, the better your IQ scores are going to be. As time goes on, more and more people are in fields or in education where they rely on those tasks daily, and games involving puzzles involving such tasks are increasing in popularity as well as in their complexity. This is why, for instance, switchboard operators in the 70's tend to score the same as physicists, even when the switchboard operators came from lower class backgrounds.

Until we come up with an intelligence test that is either more comprehensive or more objective, such as a neural connectivity scan that doesn't involve you being dead in order to have it done, IQ is a pretty arbitrary thing, really only somewhat useful in grand statistical terms, and in identifying specific learning disabilities in individuals.

Chemistry student here. How do I make chem sound cool to others when physics has all the celebrity scientists and big projects?

Make that compound (or whatever) that constantly changes colour. You might say "but anon, that's completely vacuous and doesn't really demonstrate chemistry", to which I say "neither do those 'celebrity scientists'". As for the large projects, literally 99.9% of people lost interest in them when I explained that the Higgs boson doesn't [math] all [/math] matter mass, just 3 bosons that belong to the electroweak interaction.
>>
>>8988389
I'm a math grad. When someone asks what I do and I tell them, the only response I ever hear is "I hate math."

I would actually prefer the neutral opinion that chemistry would have.

Inspiring anime music like https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6sH4F_3tHm8

If I run out of inspiring anime music then anime music is good enough, I guess. And if I run out of anime music then no fear, other japanese music is good. I personally like Hatsune Miku's voice a lot. Like, a lot. I may be in love with her voice.

And if I run out of japanese music well then I'm fucked because japanese music is the only music that exists.

So /sci/, when are we gonna colonize the stars?
63 posts and 12 images submitted.
>>
>>8986458
Colonization of the stars starts right after we decolonize science. If non-white scientists already made it to mars thousands of years ago then they can do it again.
>>
What's the point? The stars will fizzle out anyway.

We should be trying to control time and space so that they do not. Ya herd, Elon? I know you read this dumb board.
>>
>>8986458
Stars cannot be colonized. They are too hot for humans to live on them. We should colonize the planets orbiting the stars instead.

So what does /sci/ thing about this concept?

>The Deep Space Gateway (DSG) is a crew-tended cislunar space station planned by NASA for construction in the 2020s. The station would be used as a staging point for the proposed Deep Space Transport.

>The Deep Space Gateway will be initially placed in a Near-Rectilinear Halo Orbit (NRHO) around the moon.[3] Its various components are to be launched on the Space Launch System as Orion co-manifested payloads on the flights EM-2 through 8.[3] The DSG is likely to incorporate components developed under NextSTEP-2

Earth-Moon shuttle with landers and moonbase when?
>>
>>8986303
For real though all of these SLS plans are going to look retarded if SpaceX and Blue Origin are zooming around constantly by then
>>
It's something for SLS to do, at least. If they can turn it into a propellant depot along with others in LEO, then have those depots fueled by reusable rockets and use tugs to take things between LEO and the moon etc, it could make a moonbase or regular trips to the moon a lot more affordable.

But none of that will happen anytime soon as long as their mission plans remain so vague.

What do y'all think about idiot culture? Are we still going to be calling people nerds when we're in a spaceship going to other solar systems? Would it affect anything to have a culture that disrespects science while we are exploring space?

I'm really tired of the moron producing welfare state.
