I know that it takes two weeks for the brain to become dependent on a certain daily dose of caffeine and one week to get off it completely. But is it possible to prevent dependence in the first place, perhaps by drinking coffee every two or three days?
just do something more addicting than caffeine beforehand so that your mind doesn't realize it's there
> Caffeine reduced CBF by an average of 27% across both caffeine states.

Uh-oh, are you admitting that blacks' smaller brains are evidence of lesser cognitive ability?
This just crossed my mind, and I want to know what you think.
1: A car collides into another car, both cars are driving 50km/h.
2: One car is driving 100km/h, and crashes into a parked car.
Which is most fatal, and why?
>>9004039
If both cars are moving 50km/h, how would they ever crash they would never reach each other
1 for a variety of reasons.
they are "equally" dangerous if you replace the car in 2 with a solid wall.

I too watched Mythbusters, anon.
hey /sci/ what are your opinions of warp drives, is it the future of space travel, or is it just a fantasy technology?
>>9003561
Both.
>>9003603
this
We have no idea how we might go about getting any method of FTL travel functioning, since all of them, save for wormholes, violate what we know of physics thus far
if it works, then we will live in paradise, if it doesn't, we can make due with what we have for space travel
>>9003561
Pure fantasy. Relativity says FTL is time travel.
Is there any such thing as truly random? Or is it all just our inability to calculate?
>>9003490
Impossible to know. Radioactive decays appears to be random, but on the other hand it follows strict deterministic probabilities.
Prime numbers.
>>9003490
>truly random
A common response is that it depends on what you mean by 'random'. But that, in turn, depends on something more fundamental: namely, what you mean by 'true'.
Is it scientifically possible to modify human brain so it is capable of feeling more pain than it is normally possible? Can you have infinite pain?
is this bdsm related
I am do not know much about biology, but maybe you could modify the DNA of the cell so that the cells become more sensitive. Or put some chemicals that make the nerve sense more sensitive.
Does not local anethesia do the opposite by making the nerve cells less sensitive.
>>9003265
By "more pain" do you mean an increased subjective experience of pain or do you mean a more rapid response to painful stimuli? In the latter case, yes, this is possible. Different people have different response speed to pain and in theory you can increase this. As for subjective experience of pain, it's tough to say, but for example depressed people tend to report a higher subjective pain level on average than non-depressed people, so it could be possible but it's tough to remove all the confounding variables.
What /sci/ podcasts do you listen to?
I usually just put on tech talks I find on YouTube, lately I've been watching John Carmack talk about Oculus.
But any type of STEM podcast would be perfect
Thank you

Thanks

>STEM podcast
Joe rogans podcast is pretty great if you want to learn science
>you will never marry a field medalist
why do I keep my existence afloat?
looks like only 3 field medals will be handed to mathematicians from now on.

>women can't do maths
Go back to /pol/, you bigoted philistine.
I'm sure it's just a coincidence that her contributions are weakest in the history of the prize and not at all a reflection of political motives.
Pure coincidence.
Question of the day:
Your goal is to change the general opinion towards math. You want people to see the beauty of it, and also make them understand that it's a lot more than just technique (because most people have no clue), and that you don't have to be good at arithmetic to appreciate it. But most of all, you want people to stop being afraid of math, and stop perceiving it as something "beyond them", that they could never get into.
How would you do this? Feel free to suggest any idea, you have unlimited resources. For the sake of the conversation, you could be a teacher, the minister of education, a meme youtuber... you name it. What steps would you take in order to reach the goal?
>>9001159
Let's do a thought experiment. Let's replace math with poetry. How would I make everyone love the beauty of poetry? I wouldn't because poetry isn't for everyone. Some people cannot appreciate the beauty of some dude jacking off using a pen and paper all over liberal arts graduates.
basically math isn't for everyone, don't force people into it.
I would teach every child to write, in vernacular, what the goal and strategy of each problem is before they attempt it.
>>9001163
Most people avoid poetry because it doesn't suit their tastes. This doesn't seem to be the case for math. Most people avoid it because they believe themselves inherently good or bad at it. If we could teach people that math uys accessible to all, then they could make an informed decision as to whether it suits their tastes.
If the human eye doesn't see in frames as opposed to cameras, then what does it see in? What is this shit called?

it sees in photons

I have 12 spots and three colors.
Each spot has a chance of being a certain color.
25% to be red
25% to be green
50% to be yellow.
what is the chance a color will be missing?

In need of some dental advice.
This is my tooth.
It's been hurting me sometimes for a few months. Not a huge pain, and just sometimes. Today it started to hurt more. I took some pills and now I'm fine, I still feel a pain but it's like a 1/10 lingering pain. A few hours ago it was maybe a 3.
Obviously this is some decay. I just want to know if it's going to need a root canal or just a filling. Does it looke like a tooth rotten to the root to you ?
go see a dentist you brainlet
That dark seam going down the side seems pretty scary.
If you have pain its probably down to the root. Looks like a root canal for you buddy.

I'm going tomorrow but I'd like to know
Our temperature dropped below 100c some 3.8 billion years ago, is it possible we were closer to the sun and something made us move away from it?
>closer to sun
>AND something made us move away from it
dude don't fuck with my head like this
>>8996427
Well is it plaubable that a super nova happened in a galaxy say 10 light years away and the wind nudged us? Maybe earth quaffed some carbon gasses from what we know now as the sanandreas fault and that pushed us. I'm eating pickles and studying weather, give me more reasonable answers!

are you any smarter than him though?
I got into this argument with a Jew and he asked me to scientifically explain race and I realized I couldn't do it.
/sci/, can you explain what race is from a scientific standpoint? How much of a difference in genetic material do you need to be considered a "different" race? The more I think about this, the more I think that liberals are right about it being a social construct.
>>9005033
Reported for being underage
>>9005037
I'm serious. We were talking about an African and a Caucasian having a baby and what "race" that baby would be. He stumped with "is it a whole new race?"
>>9005033
Race can't be simply quantified as the percentage difference in genetic material. There are plenty of people of different races who have a higher genetic similarity with each other than with some other members of their own race.
Whats up /sci/ how are all of you today?
This is my first time on this side of 4chan so I do apologize if my post is out of place.
I wanted to ask some of you if you would have some idea where I could start to learn about physics and astrophysics.
Recently became interested in it and thought it might help fill out my days.
So any help would be greatly appreciated!
Thanks guys.
>>9004917
Just follow standard university physics curriculum
>>9004926
But is there any specific books I could start with and where should I start with math?
