Any climate scientists here who can explain how fucked are we?
Is this like "a few million 3rd world people die, but otherwise we are fine"?
Or more like "Billions of dead, collapse of global community"?
318 posts and 47 images submitted.
>>
depends on time scale

first has already happened

second, about 2050
>>
>>8999702
It's not a matter of how fucked we are, it's a matter of how much it's going to cost us in order to relatively un-fuck ourselves. We will need to build the necessary infrastructure to accommodate rising water levels and protect residential areas from increasingly frequent and more violent weather events. The more we let things get out of hand, the more expensive that is going to be.

>a few million 3rd world people die
People are already dying, as people do, but the larger consequence (for the west) is the fact that people from 3rd world countries are going to need to relocate. Climate is already the biggest determinant of (economic) migration. Europe especially already dealing with the fallout. The ironic part here is that those who tend to be anti migration also tend to be against combating climate change.

>Billions of dead
The people who will die are the ones who cannot afford to deal with the above mentioned consequences. Quite tragically, those tend to be the people in 3rd world countries, which have contributed relatively little to the initial problem.

>collapse of global community
The economic consequences of global cataclysmic events, even if they are gradual, is the flow of capital to richer economies (because it reduces risk). Again, 3rd world and developing economies will suffer from this. But in the long term, I think the west will be judged by how it accommodates those who are less fortunate in the present.

You're trying too hard to bait.

how is this cross possible?
I thought males couldn't be carriers of sex linked conditions?
Say it isn't sex linked it still doesn't work out.

Seems like a pretty straightforward case of an autosomal recessive trait. Parents 1 & 2 were Xx carriers, Children 2 & 5 were xx by bad luck, and they mated with Xx carriers, giving their children a 50% chance of inheriting a disorder but a 100% to be either a carrier or affected.
>>
>>9011291
thanks for the reply, but how can you have an unaffected female (4) and an affected female (5) if the parents are both just carriers?
>>
>>9011294
Yy x Yy can produce yy (1/4 affected)
Yy x Yy can also produce YY or Yy (1/4 unaffected, 1/2 carrier)

For sites like iqtest.dk, aren't they inaccurate with respect to the fact they only test spatial reasoning in conjunction with logical thinking? What if people can't flip pictures in there head quickly but have good logic skills?

Jews? Also proof of your statement.

So I scored 132 on iqtest.dk and scored max on mensa frt (135+) and Im all about logic. At the same time my gf scored 130 on iqtest.dk and also scored 135+ on mensa test while she is most illogical person I know. Also there is iqnavi site with all types of tests and I asked 5-6 people to take both spatial and logic test seperately and biggest diff was 5 points. It is small sample but I have yet to observe that the connection isnt valid.

I kinda regret never doing an IQ test when I was at an age of peak intelligence.
I hear IQ starts declining in early-mid 20's. I did my first online IQ test at age 29, and scored 117, i.e. nothing amazing but above average. I got through a mechanical engineering degree, so I can only wonder what it would have peaked at. Have any of you observed an IQ decline? What kind of rate?
40 posts and 21 images submitted.
>>
The decline after peak is very slow, your peak IQ probably wasn't a lot different from your current.
>>
>>9010752
what you should actually do is find out how many intelligence points you have as IQ is a worthless measure because it relies on empirical evidence

Hey /sci/ somewhat-newfag here,

I keep reading people talking about the following and I was hoping you could give me a quick rundown on the following:

>TOR
what is it, should I use it, how do I use it

>Proxy/vpn
what is it, should I use it, how do I use it?

>Proxy/vpn
What are they, should I use them, how do I use them?

Relavant other welcome

Not planning on doing anything illegal, just interested in the topic.

>proxy
suppose your internet connection is you sending letters through a mailbox to someone
even if your letters are encrypted, everyone knows you are the one sending the letters and metadata is still visible (address etc is on the envelope).

a proxy: you ask a kid to push the letters in the mailbox for you, such that people will think that kid is the one sending the mail while in reality you are.

creepy organisations that spy on you, such as the NSA and your ISP still know you are handing the kid your mail so a proxy won't help against that.
>>
>>9009806
Thanks anon
>>
>>9009806
But a Vpn (with multiple kids) would be useful, if not unspyable.

If consciousness is unique and differentiates from person to person, then why is it so easy to predict, control and manipulate people? There are countless fool-proof books on how to influence people and the environment around them. If philosophical arguments can't convince you, then maybe chemistry can. All of our actions and reactions are based off chemical balance/imbalance in our brain, with some people administrating specific drugs to boost that balance or imbalance for euphoria.

How can you be conscious when all you do unconsciously, is to fulfil the biological demand for pleasure?

>>
>>9009490
Meh, don't care.
>>
>>9009516

but of course you don't... you're not even real
>>
You seem to talk of consciousness as free will.

We are consciousness but our decisions are mostly perhaps all made unconsciousness.

I've read plenty of cognitive science with some biological and genetic elements and came to the conclusion that if free will does exist it must be extremely limited

Then I read a neuroscience book and it seems more logical to hold the view that free will does not exist until proven than the other way around

Believing we make our decisions consciously is perhaps beter for your mental health, though I would say that in some ways it is more humane to think of decisions as constrainted and automatic

A house does not exist, it's just a bunch of parts. The parts are just a bunch of atoms. The atoms are made up smaller parts, and those smaller parts are also made up of smaller parts. Ultimately, virtually all that we know to exist does not actually exist. It's all just an illusion, not actual reality. It's all just a bunch of dots, behaving a certain way.

Does anybody think it's possible to selectively breed ants to make a race of ants that police.can use to find drugs? I'm a criminal justice student and I wanna know if police can one day place a colony of ants by a home and these ants look for cocaine or drugs and take it bag to the colony where the police collect the evidence? Do you think it's possible and would this evidence hold up in court? Do you think a cop would need a warrant to send in ants. What are some other ways humans could weaponize ants?

https://www.clickorlando.com/news/national/nasa-unveils-plan-to-test-asteroid-defense-technique
>On Friday, the space agency announced plans to redirect the course of a small asteroid approaching Earth, as part of the Double Asteroid Redirection Test (DART), according to a NASA press release.
>The target of the test is an asteroid system called Didymos, the release said. Didymos -- Greek for "twin" -- is a binary asteroid system, made up of one asteroid, Didymos A, and a smaller one, Didymos B, which orbits its larger neighbor.
>In October 2022, as Didymos makes an approach near Earth, NASA will launch a refrigerator-sized spacecraft towards the asteroids, aimed at Didymos B, the release said. When the DART spacecraft and the asteroid collide, the spacecraft will be traveling at a staggering 3.7 miles per second.
When will NASA stop bullying innocent asteroids, /sci/? Didymos A and B have been inseparable for billions of years and now NASA is going to savagely rip them apart for some experiment that does not need to happen to prove this simple concept.
Why is this allowed?

NASA should pull the Asteroid to collide with Earth.

It would reduce the population, killing people, solving the overpopulation Crysis on Earth.
Just drop it in some shit hole.

It would also solve the Global Warming. Bringing an Ice Age.

A refrigerator-sized projectile is capable of altering the trajectory of an asteroid? How large is the asteroid? Does the projectile have explosives?
>>

the faster something is going, the more force it has
you don't need to have a big projectile if it is a very, very fast projectile

Has quantum mechanics disproved materialism?

An abstract mathematical superposition of a cat might be able to describe multiple possible states simultaneously but a material cat can't be alive catching mice and lying there dead at the same time.

It has disproved realism and at the very least undermined materialism.

If von-Neumann's 'consciousness causes collapse' hypothesis is correct then yes, QM does disprove materialism.
