Hey /sci/
A while ago I had an idea for a product, and since then have turned that idea into a functioning albeit far from commercially viable thing. The thing is, this is as far as I, without a background in mechanical and materials engineering and just a lot of patience, free time, and own money, can realistically go.

So I have something akin to a prototype, but more like a proof of concept. The question is, where do I go from here? I absolutely know this will require optimization from a professional engineer/group of engineers before I have something that can be mass produced and be commercially viable too.

Only then am I thinking to patent the product. Do I talk to people, go to kickstarter or crowdfunding, knock on the doors of my engineering faculty (I'm in electrical), or search for investors, or any other thing? What would you do?

If you really think it worths shit, patent it, get the money from family/friends,suck dicks, idk.

I would do little tests before though, like setting a squeeze page, paying some traffic to see if theres market and try to build a email list with the promise of 'coming soon' (without actually saying the exact thing, just hints at what u will solve). If people picks the bait then you patent and aim to launch it
>>
>>9026605
The problem is how can I patent something that's more akin to a proof of concept than the final thing? Although it works it literally looks made out of something you might expect from junkyard wars and it's functioning at a much lower capacity than it could since no optimization.
>>
>>9026610
Patents dont have to even work lol the proof of concept is enough, get a patent lawyer that will help you to pick the right words, does the requests, etc

anyone know if getting growth hormone tested can get me an appointment if I'm out of clinical range or is it not worth it?
>>
Why did you measure hormones? There is no reason to order such assays just for the lulz. Labs results are meaningless outside clinical context, and so, an isolated low GH results means shit

Hello /sci/, 18 year old hoping to gain admission into a medical college by next year. A doctor is a respectable, rewarding profession here in the Third World, especially when treated like a business.

But that's off topic. I've not always been great a math, but I've recently developed interest in it, and other science. I like biology, but right now it is not as intellectually stimulating.

I do study physics and chemistry right now, but do not, and cannot take any math courses. But the state of education here is dismal. I once read Feynman's biography, and the part where he describes the state of science education in Brazil particularly resonates. They do not explain to us the significance of Gauss's law for instance, other than something to be remembered for an exam.

I've tried reading Feynman's lectures, but I do not understand the math, and often struggle. I realize that my math education is severely deficient (maybe worse than a typical western high schooler).

I know these threads are commonly despised, but I need help. I've looked at the sticky, (many times) but it does not help me in my case. What resources should I gather to begin learning science? I am essentially an autodidact in this undertaking.

Basically, how can I teach myself science and mathematics, of a high standard? What are some good books to learn? How should I proceed? Is 3-4 hours of hard work a day enough?

You need to know and understand these concepts:
limit (of a sequence and of a function) when it exists and when it doesn't, derivative, integral, the rules for changing the order of applications (derivative of an integral of a function and the integral of a derivative of a function). This is basically standard calculus.

You need to solve enough problems to develop an intuition.

For the above pick any calculus textbook.
After that, I would recommend "Understanding Analysis" to understand why we define things as we do in calculus, do at least one third of the exercises.

You are now proficient enough in single variable calculus/analysis to solve a large amount of physics problems. Pick up a book on engineering statics and dynamics and do enough of the exercises to get intuition for how to solve the problems.

Pick up a book on basic linear algebra and multivariable calculus, solve most of the problems.
Pick up a book on introductory electromagnetism, do at least half of the exercises.

Go back and review these books again, (skim each chapter and do some of the harder exercises, if you get stuck then make sure to work through it).

You now have a solid foundation for learning more physics. On you go.

If this is over your head then describe the problems you are having in more detail so that we can tailor it further.
>>
>>9026265
Funny, because the concepts they teach us now require an understanding of calculus, when I haven't taken a single class on it. I remember learning Bohr's derivation for the radius of a hydrogen atom like a grocery list, without understanding it at all.

I've covered basic math, equivalent to o level math in the UK. You know, basic geometry, trigonometry, algebra, probability etc. However, I want to brush up on this as well. I know how stupid this question is, but what is the very basic beginning point for learning mathematics?

Thanks btw. So I should proceed from math to physics?

is it possible to be an undergraduate researcher in mathematics?
22 posts and 2 images submitted.
>>
There are three types of students who do research in undergrad

>1. Prodigies who excelled in pretty much every math contest available, maybe completed a bachelor's early, manage to do original research in a field while schools like Harvard, UC Berkeley etc. fight over them. Extremely rare and noteworthy; these students are Fields medal material

>2. Talented students who probably started analysis in high school, attended a great undergrad program and have a very good chance of admission to a top 10 program. Relatively rare when considering the population of mathematicians as a whole, but disproportionately represented in the top ranks of academia. Many will find TT-positions relatively soon after graduation

>3. Reasonably motivated, hard-working undergrads who find a relatively easy problem in an obscure field that requires little background, e.g. combinatorics or group theory. These students tend to do well if they don't burn out in grad school, but finding positions in academia is a crapshoot

For the rest of us, the whole point of a PhD program is to prepare you to do research. Just about any problem that's worth the effort will require a huge amount of background material in a narrow field as well as basic skills across a large swath of mathematics.

I have talked to several math professors at my old school (top 20) who are skeptical about undergad research: unless it's poor research it doesn't hurt, but it's not a necessity to get into a good school like most students think it is.
>>
>>9026231
Anyone can post in Vixra, so if you find an interesting problem that does not appear when you google it then congratulations, you are on your way to becoming a researcher.

Pro tip: In Vixra you can post under a fake name as long as it is not trying to impersonate someone else.

I just want to know what pathway exists for me to pursue research as a career. Im not fond of just putting it as a hobby because of the dedication needed but im afraid of not bejng credible.

what is a number?

i know we numerals like 1,2,3,4,5,6,7,8,9,0, but what are they representing?

why is it that when we add numbers their order doesn't matter, and when we multiply by 1 or add by 0 the original number is the same?

what gives them such properties?

this shit has always eluded me even while doing algebra work. i don't like just computing shit when i don't even know what i'm moving around, especially when dealing with commutativity and that units can be preserved (1km +1km = 2km, 2x2km=km^2).

why? what causes/does/IS this? is there anything to encapsulate this in some theorem? or is it just the way it is and we have to just treat it self evident?

there are ways to define numbers in a bigger framework, peano axioms, set theory, etc etc

in the end, numbers are what they are not because of the theoretical framework in which you define them, but because they do what you want them to do

Is it really a meme that it's not really that important where you study when you're getting your undergrad?

Utahfag here, I'm a non-traditional transfer student, as I was in the Army for a long time so now I'm late 20s, so obviously I've been out of the game for a while.
I want to go to University of Utah but they're harder to get into than Utah State University, but does it really matter if I'm just trying to get a bachelors anyway? I'll cross the graduate studies bridge when I get there

Protip op, if you were in the military any state college will do as you already over came the biggest hurdle a college bound student would need to deal with which is tangible experience.

Only non-military folks have to worry about the "prestige" of a college they enroll into as it is one of the few ways they can advertise themselves.

In other words you should be fine, just get go into an employable field and call it a day.

the GI bill is fuckin' rad. i literally made 35k$ a year just off the BAH and scholarship/pell grant refunds. pick a bunch of schools and apply. your vet status will get your foot in the door with a lot of schools, more than you think. you have a fuckton of options so don't limit yourself.

getting a job with vet status is ez.

A proposal by Cornell University to release genetically engineered moths with a gene that causes them to eventually die off has been approved for a small area in upstate New York by the U.S. Department of Agriculture.

Researchers say the engineered insects could be a pesticide-free tool in fighting crop damage caused by the diamondback moth, an invasive species known to destroy cabbage, cauliflower, and broccoli. The federal agency is giving a green light to the experiment because it says the field trial is unlikely to pose a risk to the environment or human health.

Does the existence of very advanced math mean that it describes something in our physical universe that we are just unaware of at the moment?
28 posts and 4 images submitted.
>>
>>9025718
No
>>
The evolving nature of language implies that there are things in the universe we have yet to encounter. The word "computer" and all it implied did not exist a thousand years ago. Mathematics is just a language. Sometimes entire dialects of mathematics are created in order to describe new categories of concepts.
But I'm aware that you're asking "does math imply god exists" and the answer is certainly no. Also, you're an idiot.
>>
No. Heisenberg was making a metaphor. As for what 'God' is a metaphor for, that's something you can only discover for yourself once you get very, very, very deep into science.

Whats wrong with Pilot Wave theory.

i dont intend to give the idea that i have more than a passing level of familiarity with basic QM concepts but from what ive been able to tell is that it was dismissed at the time because it was decided that you couldnt measure the pilot wave directly and it was therefore not good science.

Well yes, it's a complication that predicts no measurable difference than standard quantum theory, so it's not good science on an empirical level.

What's the big deal with global warming?

Why can't people understand that some people aren't retarded enough to believe that if we're just given enough time "humanity" will become some great space civilization?

Humans will inevitably become extinct, doesn't matter if it happens one thousand or one billion years from now.

Seriously, do any of you remember? How it was before you knew any math? If I try to remember that far back it is just like a black hole ate my memories. I don't remember it. All memories I have are from after I knew arithmetic. Fucking weird.

>Mice and rats on fasting regimes are slimmer, live longer, and stay smarter and physically stronger as they age. They resist tumors, inflammatory diseases, and the neurodegeneration that characterizes diseases like Parkinson’s and Alzheimer’s. They handily fight off infection and can even sprout new neurons. They don’t end up with diabetes, autoimmune disease, high cholesterol or fatty livers.

So why aren't you fasting to improve IQ? Lose weight and improve mental capabilities while not succumbing to the foodjew
