pic unrelated: What does wildberger have his hand in here?

I know that linear algebra is a very important and well-developed theory, but I can't get the concepts to click on an intuitive level. Specifically, the axiomatic formulation of a vector space seems kind of arbitrary to me, and I don't understand why matrix-vector algebra has to be so qualitatively different from regular-old, single-dimensional algebra.

I am just now starting to feel comfortable with addition and multiplication as the natural/fundamental operations defined on the field of rational numbers (infinite sets & the reals are a meme). The way I see it, a number system is given by a particular choice of origin and unit. The addition operation arises from symmetry with respect to shifting the origin while multiplication corresponds to symmetry with respect to scaling the unit. This feels right I guess.

But this perspective breaks when I try to extend the analogy to a vector space over Q. I like to think of vectors as 'n-dimensional numbers', so it would be nice if the operations on regular numbers just extended naturally to vectors. This is in fact the case for vector addition, but as we all know, component-wise multiplication with vectors is usually nonsense ([v1,v2]*[u1,u2] = [v1*u1,v2*u2]) and nobody really talks about it. Instead, the vector space formulation includes scalar multiplication and the dot product is introduced as something different.

AFAIK, a vector space is closed under this component-wise multiplication, so why is it not important and included in the axioms? It seems right that vector addition would correspond to symmetry w.r.t. the origin and vector multiplication to symmetry w.r.t. the basis (or multi-dimensional unit). Multiplication by a vector would be scaling all the basis vectors or a 'multi-dimensional scaling'. What is wrong with this perspective /sci?

Your brain isn't wired for visualizing linear algebra intuitively. All you can hope for is eventually getting an intuition for the abstractions, but it's not like, say, classical mechanics, where the intuition is very visual.
>>
It get's intuitive once you understand the fundamentals of algebra. Just give it time anon.

One thing i'd say is really non-intuitive are Fourier transformations

That book is what happens when you spend decades doing one thing and then you start glorifying that one thing, thinking it will be the next revolution.

I think we all do that. We all like to think that our field is the best field. I guess Wolfram was just rich enough to publish his drunken ramblings.
>>
>>9052427
Wolfram Alpha and Mathematica are products that measure themselves with the top though, don't you think so?

Especially the Wolfram Language is something without comparison regarding its capabilities.
>>
>>9052650
But his book is not about that. It is about how computer science is too cool for school and it is clear Wolfram only jerks CS that much because right now he is the top dog in that field right now.

You know the type. High school dropouts or non STEM Bachelors with no intentions of entering the academic or professional scientific world.

They're all over social media with their stupid fanboying and girling over science, sharing Neil Degrassi Tyson quotes, IFL Science clickbait, talking about god knows what.

Any stories on these folks? Also- thoughts on a final solution to the science fan problem welcome.

Why is that?

Why pandas are fucking dying while those fuckers are getting more immune with every year?

You see, OP. As a molecular biologist, it also amazes me. The simplest life forms are the ones that endure the most. It is quite the example of Occam's Razor. If primitive life forms adapt so easily, why would humans evolve into the first place? Darwin himself said that it is not the strongest nor the most intelligent that survives, but the one that adapts to nature the best. It is things like that which each day pull me closer to the realization we are the subjects of an intelligent design. As a scientist these creatures represent the proof of God.
>>
>>9046957
It happens because they are R-type with multiple generations per year and so many offspring that a few mutations in every brood literally doesn't matter because only ~1/100 survives long enough to mate.
>>
>>9046957
not really, it's mostly because they have shorter life times and have a lot of opposition. A horse or human isn't going to do much, given their domestic and safe life style combined with long lifespans. Not to mention it's obviously harder for complex traits to emerge so overall evolution is slow.

First-order logic is the language of mathematics.
The easiest way to swallow the redpill (that I know of) is probably pic related.
Peter Smith seems to be quite good at bringing these kinds of ideas to non-specialists, in my experience (you can check out his blog "Logic Matters" for prepatory material if you need help bridging the gap).

Is a math degree more useful for a CS related career than a CS degree?
16 posts and 3 images submitted.

neither degrees will teach you how to do a real job. The CS guy will be better prepared than the math guy, but both can succeed/fail based on their skillset.

>>9054058
>is a math degree more useful than an applied math degree
>>
>>9054058
Generally speaking, CS degrees are easier than math degrees. This means that
> you learn less in a CS degree than a math degree
> you meet more people taking CS than math, increasing your networking opportunities

Given that any one who is [math]capable[/math] of doing a math degree is equally capable of reading math textbooks and learning the content in their own time via self-study, I'd go with CS if your goal is to get a good job as opposed to going into academia.

But be prepared to spend more time talking about math/CS with your profs than your fellow students.

If you buy into the standard interpretations then apes remained in their native jungles after the climate change which resulted in african grasslands (I can't spell savana). This meant they were not selected for upright posture for predator avoidance and thus were not as free to use their hands to carry, grab, manipulate leading to further selective pressure on intelligence.

If you buy the alternative aqua ape theory, however, it is because apes did not go through the aquatic period that hominids did resulting in the supportive liquid environment which aided transition to bipedalism as has occured in proboscis monkey.

Can we get some higher quality bio/chem threads sci? Also sage.

the rules are these:
you choose one of the following terms, and try explaining it as simply and as well as you can. most important thing is being able to explain it well enough for a complete layman to understand, but at the same time keeping it as accurate as you can.
also, you can't use google or other comments to find inspiration. it has to be all you. after commenting, rate other people's definitions.
the terms you can choose from:
easy mode:
>vector
>electric charge
>energy
>gravity (classical definition)
>information

hard mode:
>time
>entropy
>gravity (GR definition)
>field (the mathematical meaning)
> dimension

let's see what you got. if you wanna define something off the list go for it, but keep it in the same "style" as the other terms.
