>main incentive to save money is so I can afford to become a cyborg when the technology becomes available
On a scale of 1 to 10, how delusional am I?

Don't put stock in anything sci has to say. Most of this board doesn't know anything about science or new technologies.

You save 1 unit, cyborg stuff would've cost 1 unit at this point for each unit you save.
You save 1 unit, cyborg stuff now costs 2 units at this point for each unit you save.
You save 2 units, cyborg stuff now costs 4 units at this point for each unit you save.
You'll never be able to afford it, even if you lived in almost poverty to save.

What's the scientific reasoning for Africa's failure to ever accomplish anything of value?
315 posts and 52 images submitted.
>>
Low capacity for abstract thought.
>>
It's just simple geography.

I don't get why people keep making a big deal of this.

Wherever the land was plentiful and there was opportunities for trade and such, civilization flourished and from there came many innovations.

Wherever there was nothing else but mountains and deserts the sheep herders remained sheep herders.

Think of this. Europeans accomplished plenty of things. They had multiple successful civilizations. The Chinese also had multiple successful civilizations. And the Indians as well. And the Arabs and all around the Levant there were also multiple successful civilizations.

Then you have Mongolia, and all the 'stans surrounded by all those successful civilizations and they accomplished nothing. Why? Because they are hostile countries. Not really fit for human habituation.

Africa has more natural resources than any other continent on the planet

I am aware of radiation shielding materials, but is there any plausibility in the realm of science for a substance that could act as a radiation "extinguisher?"

For example, imagine an aircraft powered by closed-cycle nuclear thrust. Now imagine that aircraft crashing horribly. Say, if a breach in its reactor core were detected, would there be any possibility of some analog of a fire-suppression system being place, to activate and seal off or cover the reactor, preventing a radiation leak?

Feel free to entertain wild advances in the future of material science and chemistry.

Not really. I guess you could use something like expanding plastic foam, but if that goes off when the reactor hasn't been scramed you're gonna have a bad time. In addition if the plane hits the ground fast enough it will do fuck all.

You'd possibly already be dead. I don't think you are telling the truth. At what point do you not just buy some sleeping medication or stop stressing about the petty crap going on in your head that keeps you awake?
>>
>>9072990
I swear I have not slept. I don't need to sleep to function anymore, I can't get comfortable enough to just close my eyes and nod off
>>
>>9072980
You probably have episodes of micro-sleep where you pass out but don't remember losing consciousness. Its very common with severe sleep deprivation.

I used to have a friend who would stay awake for days with amphetamines and he would occasionally have lapses where he would go AFK on chat apps and then come back some 30 minutes later and he wouldn't remember passing out. There is a point where nature takes over and overrides all mechanisms keeping you awake so that you can get critical REM sleep otherwise you will die.

The picture doesn't adequately depict the actual object I have in my possession however I will try to describe it as best as I can. The rock is dark in color some areas are near black with obsidian this would indicate it's of a volcanic nature.
I live close to a dormant volcano there's a small trail that has several pieces of volcanic rock most of which contain petrified wood copper light and imprints of trees and leaves. But today I found something interesting it appears to be a piece of rebar or similar metal object the rock appears very old but the rebar is recent and is surrounded entirely by the rock it doesn't appear to have been hammered or drilled and as the picture shows there is also some melted metal of some sort. How could this happen?.

That is a piece of concrete my friend. Globs like that are poured into holes to give posts and street signs foundational support. you can sometimes find them in empty lots where a building deconstruction has been done.

Not to sure about that.
as I stated the pictures don't do the object much good. There is no Street or nearby city or town if it was in a Development Area I would suspect it would be concrete however considering this is in the mountains with no homes around this raises my suspicions I have other specimens of a similar nature.
>>
>>9072422
not him, that's a hunk of concrete.

I don't know if I'm sperging it out really nice or if my worries are actually legit but here goes nothing

>studying about philosophy, epistemology and philosophy of science
>the newtons flaming laser sword thing is taken a little more serious than it should for something that looks like a joke
>realize that, behind the veil of smirkyness and debauch, many actually take that as serious thought

I don't really know what kind of bad experience most of you guys had with humanities subjects during school but, you know, i think you're smart enough to realize there are things that are just out of the grasp of objective answers...
I think that kind of mindset is really empovering scientific discussion and, most importantly, being passed down to mainstream thought...

That sounds to me like you gave up. Everything has an objective answer, you are just too lazy to find it. I think you should go back to the coal mines, where you belong.

The Quantum Enigma

I'd classify it as pop-sci, but it is of the highest level. There is no bullshit, analogies are incredibly accurate to the actual theory, but the analogous stories are within reach of anyone with a high school education.

I don't know if it is pop-sci, but Jurassic Park's book is pretty amazing, it does concentrate on the science parts way more than the film.

So recently workers were redoing my building's insulation with mineral wool (stone wool in particular,) but one of them fell and died, so they just left the mineral wool on the walls exposed for 3 weeks straight now, with huge blocks of this shit literally inches from my window which is often open.

I do know mineral fibers are pretty dangerous for your lungs, but at what point does it become a cancer hazard? I've been itchy, and often get contact dermatitis pretty extensively in all my appartment for the past week and I do see some fibers all over the furniture, but just dont know if the dose im breathing in is dangerous.

Should I move out until they finish? Or does it only get dangerous ifyou work your whole life with this stuff? I'm really worried about this for some reason.

What are the implications of Godel's incompleteness theorems in physics /sci/?
16 posts and 3 images submitted.
>>
those theorems are why string theory is true but unproven
>>
none, practically speaking.

you can cook up some very goofy models of phenomena (that are nowhere near reasonable to assume) and there you'll find that you can pose questions about the systems (and by extension, about the described phenonomena) that can provable not be answered.
(Things like questions regarding the eigenvalues of very exotic hamiltonians)
>>
For example it directly follows from the incompleteness theorem that in three space dimensions and time, given an initial velocity field, there exists a vector velocity and a scalar pressure field, which are both smooth and globally defined, that solve the Navier–Stokes equations.
