Have been considering the same, tell me how it turns out.
How to study math?
People say that I should take notes, but I'm lazy and I dont like to write down everything
I like to do problems and shit but I often forgot important things
>>9082476
>I'm lazy and I dont like to write down everything
here is your problem
>>9082476
the trick is to stop being lazy. If you don't even have the will to do that, well, you can always do engineering
do homework
then do practice problems from the book
then if you still somehow do not get it, ask the teacher because that's what they get paid (by you) to do
It's all in practice; that small shit that you forget can be corrected by practice and homework.
Any (actually) employed engineers here? I've got a question. A friend of mine did both his undergraduate and Masters degree at Carnegie Mellon in mechanical engineering. He did everything he was supposed to do, he managed to keep a 3.8 his whole time, joined relevant clubs, joined an engineering fraternity and made connections.
He did side projects and showcased them all over social media, taught as a teaching assisstant / adjust professor during grad school, but after he graduated, the dude was unemployed for over 2 years and just recently found a job working MINIMUM WAGE at an engineering firm.
What the fuck gives? Does MechE just not pay off? Most engineering students, even the mediocre ones, can expect a job upon graduation, usually anywhere from $60k - 160k depending on field an location, but this guy just got buttfucked. What can I do in my time as undergrad to avoid this type of situation?
Granted I realize his case is special, and that a majority of engineering students find jobs that pay well, but it seems MechE is having a really rough time lately.
Also, for reference, I'm doing EE with a focus in CPU architecture, sometimes called CompE or ECE. So hopefully I'll have better outlooks.

Everyone I talk to tells me that Jedi's auto lose to bullets. They move too fast and won't be deflected like lasers and they'd have molten lead sprayed on their faces.
However I suggest that perhaps the lightsaber is far too hot and dense for lead bullets to pass through without becoming a gas. After all they cut through trees and steel effortlessly, and remain stable during duels.
What do you guys think?
Yeah, I always thought jedi would not work with bullets
Jedi are frequently shown in the movies cutting through metal and they never have a single problem with "molten metal" or superheated metal gas burning them.
Also, Jedi can move at impossibly fast speeds. This isn't like your cousin Chuck who does LARP trying to block a bullet with his katana. This is a magic wizard who can run at the speed of sound and has his motions partially controlled by "the force", which can see the future. These are people who literally can block something they can't see and don't know is coming with absolutely no external cues except the force (see: Luke, a completely untrained farm boy blocking lasers with the blast helmet on)
So for the question "can magical, impossible people do this magical, impossible thing?" the answer is, "yes, jedi can block bullets with their lightsaber without injury"
personally, I would suggest a flamethrower for fighting jedi. Or a nuke
you'd think the storm troopers would all have an extra 9mm in their holster in case of jedi, but how do the laser guns even work? It seems to me that it must be some kind of plasma
also is the shape of a lightsaber round or is it flat like a normal sword? cause you could block bullets with the flat side of a sword so long as it doesn't break

When will cold fusion be real?
It won't.
It's impossible by definition.
>>9081863
>It's impossible by definition.
Technically, it's not impossible by /definition/. Cold Fusion is about overcoming electric repulsion without the use of confined hot plasma. There just happens to be no known way to actually do that.
We are the only species that will do this. Whether you're taking a final test or kicking a penalty, humans usually underperform under pressure. What would the evolutionary reason for this be?
[citation needed]
>>9081731
Talk for yourself. When I practice for tests I usually make a lot of dumb mistakes but when I take a test I not only work faster, I make less mistakes.
To be quite honest I think that whenever I am given a test I become another person. I become very concentrated on this one paper in front of me and thoughts just flow. They perfectly from my brain to the paper. It is beautiful.
I've tried replicating this brain-state outside of tests and I have been able to. When I become autistically interested in a problem or topic then I am able to hold this brain-state for a while but it is completely random. I never know what will trigger it. But tests always trigger it. They are like magic.

how the mind works under societal pressure may not be related to how people acted while humanity was being shaped through evolution. The pressures people feel today are much different than the pressures our ancestors felt.

https://www.washingtonpost.com/news/to-your-health/wp/2017/08/02/first-human-embryo-editing-experiment-in-u-s-corrects-gene-for-heart-condition/
The mainstream media is framing Genetic Editing in the best possible light in all articles. This is across every single major media company. Positive spin on the issue.
anti-eugenics brainlets are absolutely devastated. Look at all the headlines on this subject. EVERY SINGLE ONE is using the best possible spin and wording with zero mention of fears or drawbacks. Da illuminati is in favor of genetic engineering boys, nothing will stop it. Transhumanism wins.
Since people will cry. Why is this thread about media coverage on genetic engineering? Media coverage and spin will greatly effect public opinion and potential regulations. The fact every single media company in USA is running positive spin headlines is telling. When it comes to science like this public acceptance is very important for regulatory and research funding reasons hence relevant to sci.
Spin Examples:
In Breakthrough, Scientists Edit a Dangerous Mutation From Genes in Human Embryos
>breakthrough, edit, dangerous mutation, etc all positive spins
First human embryo editing experiment in U.S. ‘corrects’ gene for heart condition
>corrects, focuses on curing
In Gene-Editing Advance, Scientists Correct Defect in Human Embryos
Research addresses a condition that is a common cause of sudden cardiac death in young athletes
>correct, defect, etc
In a first, scientists rid human embryos of a potentially fatal gene mutation by editing their DNA
>first, get rid of, fatal gene mutation, editing
Just a quick note, the word "editing" is actually a pro spin word. The use of word Edit instead of engineer or other words is considered a big propaganda win for pro-eugenics people.
Scientists edit disease-causing gene mutation in human embryos
ETC.
Every single news article used all the pro-eugenics transhumanist pro-spin wording and ZERO of the anti-editing words.
Good?

Did women get fucked over by evolution? They seem to be worse than men at everything but caregiving.
>>9081384
if anything, men are genetically inferior to women, as women can repair their X chromosome with homologous recombination, which contains far more coding information than the Y chromosome (which cannot be repaired, and only contains the SRY gene really)
Women are better at memory recall than men. Women are more physically flexible than men. Women have a higher hearing range than men. Women see more colors than men. Women can have multiple orgasms while men cannot.
Men are better at spacial recognition than women. Men are physically stronger than women. Men have more stamina than women. Men have faster reflexes than women. Men are physically sturdier than women. Men are fertile throughout their lives.
So, take your pick I guess?
Men are all around better at things like sports, hunting, and combat. If that's what you're judgment is going by then sure. Knock yourself out.
>>9081384
>>9081384
Women and men evolved for what was necessary for the survival of the species. Serendipitously of course. A lack of prevalent masculine female traits is the result of masculinity not being relevant for passing on genes. One of the reasons why on average women tend to have slower reaction times. Women tend to be better multi-taskers.

As a soon to be holder of a BS in Physics, what does grad school look like for a physics major?
I'd like to get a PhD, but I'll be honest I'm not entirely sure what I'd be getting myself into. So I have a few questions.
I have some schools in mind. One is Michigan Tech in the Upper Peninsula of Michigan. You might think this is a strange choice but set those aside for now. They offer a PhD program, and require a 3.0 or greater GPA from your BS Degree, GRE score of 135 or better, and some letters of recommendation.
As someone who hasn't taken the GRE yet, how good is a 135?
Okay next question. Say I was offered acceptance into their PhD program for Fall 2018. What happens now? I'm under the assumption I get some sort of stipend and free tuition? What is the average amount for this stipend? Is there a way to see how much it averages per university? Is housing provided at all? Or must I find my own apartment/living place near campus?
Once I'm accepted, what does my "semester" look like? Do I take a few graduate level courses and do research? Or do I jump right into figuring what I want my PhD thesis to be on?
Considering I would still be enrolled in school, are student loans still not expected to be paid yet? (Government loans, not private)
So many questions guys. Any help here would be great.

>135 GRE
in what, quant or verbal? either way that's on the super low end of grades, it goes from 130 to 170. With my pretty shit 158/160 V/Q i was able to get into a fine amount of programs though, for biochem
>>9080863
>GRE: Recommended 156 Quantitative and 3.0 or higher Analytical Writing (Michigan Tech students are exempt)
My bad, I was wrong with 135. 156 seems like a pretty high score.
The other school I was considering was UC San Diego as I visited their campus once and was amazed. It also appeared that they didn't require the GRE when I looked on their website.
>>9080872
> It also appeared that they didn't require the GRE when I looked on their website.
lol i would take that as a huge red flag, but more than likely they require it, it's a standard of graduate programs
156 isnt that hard, like i said i got 160 and i've only done up to calc 3, and am not a math major, and didnt prep at all, or do math in 2 years up to the test.
Physicists and anyone else please answer me this.
In the picture, there is a proton, which is made up of 3 bound quarks. Can you tell me which bit is the 3 bound quarks, and which bit is the proton, and tell me how they are different things?

The Quarks are the particles that make up the Proton. Specifically, it must be an U, U, D (Up, Up, Down) configuration. The Colored particles are the Quarks and the Gray Circle surrounding it is the proton. This image is showing you what the Proton is composed of.
