Do religion serves as a social "glue" among societies?

by glue I mean social cohesion.

Do this mean an atheists society has less social cohesion compared to a one that is more religious?
20 posts and 2 images submitted.
>>
Atheism is no different to theism because being an athiest requires faith in their own belief that a God doesn't exist coupled with their faith in science.

From this, communities of atheists arise just like communities of Christians, glued together by their belief systems.
>>
In reality it seems to be the opposite. More atheist countries have lower crime rates and higher quality of life
>>
>>9091668
that's one of the possible consequences of religion.

But, this doesn't imply an atheist community would be less cohesive. Example: Stalin's soviet union was an atheist country, and it was cohesive in the sense that it was a communist country held together by the totalitarian government. Similar with Castro's Cuba.

Motivation - how do you keep it?

That WebM gave me a heart attack
>>
>>9091591
You don't need motivation when you are starting out to do something. You now need discipline. For this to happen you need to start doing what you gotta do. Set a time for each activities and do it ritually. When you start to slip out, that is when you need motivation to get you back on the track.

Holy fucking shit I can't believe it didn't drop into the water.

What can I do with an IQ of 108? I'm really depressed right now. I almost cried in front of my therapist and she said I was "a little bit above average" but we know that doesn't count for shit.

Should I just give up on my dream of becoming a neuroscientist?

IQs a joke Son. It only makes me feel better about myself, I didn't even pay 100+ bucks for an iq test, I just took several free ones online and averaged them all up to give me 130. Kek, IQ doesn't mean shit when I'm breezing through school, I'm doing Maths now.
>>
>>9090992
If you can cry because of some shitty IQ test, maybe you shouldn't be a neuroscientist, get your shit together and we'll talk.
>>
>>9090992
Depends on your work ethic. But given that a score on a sheet of a paper is enough to send you spiralling into existential doubt, I really don't see much hope for you.

They're first quarter freshmen STEM courses, of course its easy. Being at a more prestigious school doesn't make your courses more difficult, it makes research opportunities and paid undergraduate work easier to get. It also presents good funding for graduate students.

The final exams of courses are comparable across most US universities. This is due to federal regulations on a Bachelor's degree in the sciences. The original goal of these regulations was to make sure that researchers in the American Military have a common background when designing machines of war and progress during the space race.

>>9090989
Are you serious? We did those kind of exercises in 10th grade in high school. Further proof that university rankings are nothing but propaganda. (Not even OP btw, just a "yuropoor".)

Why do people act like Occam's razor is a rigorous proof method?

There is a difference between heuristics and valid rules of deduction.

Explanation 1 has a lower Kolmogorov complexity than Explanation 2, therefore Explanation 1 is better/more accurate.
85 posts and 9 images submitted.
>>
the idea of least complexity is bullshit because simplicity is subjective. the idea of fewest assumptions is ok though

What is /sci/'s opinion on mental conditions like chronic depression and anxiety? Are they caused by chemical imbalances in the brain or are they just a psychosomatic manifestation of a functioning ego?

Chemical imbalances reinforced by negative thinking cycles.

if you guys are so smart, then why didn't you invest in bitcoin?
26 posts and 2 images submitted.

I bought btc at $20 in 2011 right before the first major mtgox hack

It crashed thereafter to pennies and I could have bought up even more but I didn't

I sold quite a bit after the first massive spike in 2013 walked away with $20k

I still have some left and regret all of my decisions thus far but I try not to think about it too much
>>
>>9089824
You can still invest in it, bit by bit, whenever there's a drop that you're confident it will recover from.
>>
Because bitcoin is bullshit that will never take off. Can't wait till it crashes and never comes back up.

Is Sam Harris overrated? He seems highly intelligent and articulate to me. He never seems to be grasping for straws, it always makes very rational sense and is very nuanced.

You may object to him based on his lack of hard STEM knowledge but he doesn't present himself as someone who has that so it's pointless

Why don't people like him?
77 posts and 9 images submitted.
>>
Criticism of him tends to come more from /lit/ types who don't like that he dabbles in philosophy. I don't think anyone really hates him because of his science work.

> Science work

He is the right wing equivalent of niggas saying we need to do POMO math or some shit.
>>
>>9088872
His astounding lack of self awareness when considering the morality of modern American society. He seems to criticise American society in a very insincere way, while defending some of its worst aspects in a way that lacks nuance but seems entirely sincere. In this sense, it's really not surprising that he's friends with Elon Musk who believes "the marketplaces all problems" while simultaneously benefiting directly from Government investment, development and Keynesianism.

Why evolution didn't get rid of lungs
replacing them instead with small sac that stores oxygen for the week, just like eating food
they use so much space and energy
4 minutes and you are dead
have to be constantly aware what to inhale
and the list goes on
there are no good things about having lungs
birds also evolved a superior respiratory system
121 posts and 14 images submitted.
>>
Because it works, evolution doesn't care if it's the best. it "cares" whether it works, in other words, if the fucker is dead he is out of the game but if it is good enough to keep him alive he is still in it.
>>
>small sac that stores oxygen for the week

Do you realize how horribly impractical that is? We're literally surrounded by oxygen 24/7, so it's not like the 4 minutes thing is a big deal.
>>
>>9088030
there is not enough oxygen in the air to do that(gasses are not verry dense).
you simply burn to much and there is no point in stupid storage devices if it is available all the time

Hey /sci/, how can you reverse damage from internet addiction, I'm a brainlet and need your advice.
I don't think I can quit the internet completely but If I implement a day in a week were I absolutely cut out electronics and do things like reading, playing guitar, exercising or masturbating will that possibly aid me in my recovery?
I was also wondering, does meditation reverse the damage of this?
14 posts and 3 images submitted.
>>
I just got internet access again after moving and I think you're creating most of these problems yourself, or at least trying to find some excuse for why you don't feel as smart as you should feel. The internet is just a way to deliver content and information, it is completely up to you if you're going to to use it to your benefit or detriment. Setting a specific time where you have to turn your computer off won't make any difference in my opinion. Reading, music production and masturbating are all things that exist with and without it, exercise maybe not but again I think you're either motivated to do that or you're not and unplugging your computer an hour a week won't really make a difference..

I think also you have no idea what actual "damage" is like lol
>>
can someone give me a non shitposting answer please
>>
You type like a fag and youre shits all retarded bro!
The internet doesn't 'damage us', ya goon, it does make us complacent and happy to be contained in dividual reality cells.
On the other hand, following the 'inverse square law', exposure to many wireless modems will slowly fry your brain.

>a professor tells me he wants me to do a PhD at his department.

>I ask what the requirements are and whether I need to write a proposal etc "don't worry we'll work on that together".

>Ok... well then I guass I'll accept

*1 month later*

>Ok anon, you need to apply for a tuition. So, you have 1 month time to write a proposal where you describe in detail what you will be studying in our research lab (biochemistry) for the next 4 years.
>Uh... well what will I be doing?
>It's your PhD, you need to find a current topic and describe every experiment you will do in the next 4 years.

HOW THE FUCK am I supposed to plan such complicated research, (which research are we even talking about?!? How I am supposed to know what kind of experiments can be carried out in that lab?!?!) out of thin air in under a month?

also, can I choose to research whatever the fuck I want? I was given no indications whatsoever. I tried to get some info from the prof without sounding like I wanted him to do my job, but the prof wouldn't give me not even a general direction.

>>9094322
I am so clueless. I never intended to do a PhD untill the prof basically begged me to go to his lab.

I thought I would just get a nice project and then be told to carry it out. Not fabricate something out of nothing.

Fuck.
>>
does your PhD program not have rotations? Usually advisers will already have a topic for a graduate research project, not sure what he's doing.
