Disclaimer: I'm no physicist and have less than a basic understanding of the concepts I'm about to discuss. I'm simply presenting my intuition, which is probably stupid.

>Is there a correlation between the arrow of time and the expansion of space?
I've heard that space and time are inseperable and only understood as the single concept of space-time.
Also that the faster you move, the slower time flows for you. Is it because the expansion of space relative to your position in it, become closer together, thus the difference which causes the flaw of time is smaller?

Assuming aliens are real, would convergent evolution with humans make sense or is that something that's already been debunked?
9 posts and 1 images submitted.
>>
In evolutionary biology, convergent evolution is the process whereby organisms not closely related (not monophyletic), independently evolve similar traits as a result of having to adapt to similar environments or ecological niches.

Maybe! Depending on something very specific i cant quite put my finger on.
>>
It might happen but the odds are astronomically low that the aliens would look human enough for you to consider them human.

The best you could hope for would be a bipedal lifeform with bilateral symmetry and a digestive tract separate from the sexual organs. They're not going to be blue women with big heaving titties.
>>
This thread pops up here fairly regularly and I've posted at length on why humanoid is the only likely arrangement for technologically savvy intelligent lifeforms. And each time I genuinely and humbly ask to be proved wrong, but nobody can, because developmental biology and physiology reasons. I would love the possibility of there being something wild out there, but it doesn't seem to be so.

The best possibility I could come up with would be reptilian humanoid, like a Cardassian.

Hi,
Absolute imbecile here. Why do mathematician use the word magnitude in place of "size" or "extent"

>failed algebra 2 two times back in highschool.
>struggled through algebra 1 and geometry.
>want to become an engineer.

Is it possible? If I pre study very, very hard before I try for a degree in engineering next year, will I make it?

Also, how does one get better at mathematics? Do I just do a bunch of practice problems?

PLS HALP

And really, how does one get better at math

Don't listen to anyone who says you can't do it. Math is easy, I used to struggle at math too, cuz I didn't give a single shit, all you have to do is apply yourself put in alot of effort and you'll git gud at math, unless you have a major disability or genetic problem with numbers and logic, you can do it.

I was thinking about natural selection and selection in general. How all of our traits are the results of what was most fit for the environment. What if our consciousnesses and decisions worked similarly? What if the mind is like a sponge that picks up things from our genetics, our upbringing, our environment and every thing else and the only things that can ever come out of it are the results of that?
6 posts and 3 images submitted.
>>
>>9109333

It's impossible to truly disprove what you're saying, and there have been arguments made for that sort of thing before, but to me it seems like the sheer breadth of human variety would preclude the mind arising deterministically from the factors around us. Still, the brain is very complex and poorly understood. It's possible. If it is the case, it probably depends on enough very tiny often-changing factors that it doesn't make much of a difference.

It's probably not something that we can know until we've fully mapped the consciousness onto the brain, and we're a hell of a long ways away from that.

not really.
they are the result of what was most fit out of the space of possibilities of the random mutations that happened in our particular ancestral lines, not the best possible ones.

How do you justify the faith inherent in any scientific understanding of... well anything really?

I'm just curious, this being the science board and all, how you've all come to think that science is somehow founded upon a ground more solid than some other method of generating knowledge?
39 posts and 3 images submitted.
>>
>>9109278
The answer to your question requires a higher formal education to comprehend.
Do you have one?
>>
science is not interested in truth, for this you want philosophy. science is about making inferences, from particular examples to general rules, and making these inferences explicit, falsifiable, coherent with logic, observations and the pre-existing theories. scientific method is just a tool to describe a subset of reality, and it doesn't have the pretence to be anything more than this.
>>
you dont need inherent faith in syense when you have inherent faith in reproducibility

Let [math]S[/math] be the set of all symbols.
Let [math]N[/math] be the set of all numerical sets.

Clearly [math]\mathbb{N}[/math] belongs to both [math]S[/math] and [math]N[/math].

How about you start by checking whether [math]S[/math] and [math]N[/math] are both well-defined according to ZFC?

[math]S[/math] can't exist by the Axiom of Regularity

Let [math]S[/math] be a finite collection of symbols representing numerical sets such that [math]\mathbb{N}\in S[/math].
Does [math]S[/math] contain [math]\mathbb{N}[/math] as set of natural numbers?
What is the distinction between set and its symbol?

Hi.

Is the correct term "Ternary number" or "Trinary number"? The Truth™ has both concepts but is a bit inconsistent:

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Trinary

I mean numbers in the {0,1,2}-System.

>“Mary is really bitchy today; she must be on the rag.” Comments like this are all too common, and are misguided. In her new book, Robyn Stein DeLuca dispels the myths about how hormones affect women’s moods and mental health, myths that have contributed to unequal treatment of women. Junk science supported the myths; good science debunks them.

Watched some popscience documentary about dark matter. If I understand it correctly, dark matter is something we made up because observed galaxies seemed to be spinning faster than they should?
Is there any more evidence that dark matter even exists, other than to conveniently solve some arbitrary problem? It doesn't feel very scientific to establish a new type of matter that you ascribe properties and shit to, based on a problem that didn't work out the way you think it would.

dark matter is a meme

So you don't even know what dark matter is but you still feel the need to make some kneejerk reaction about it being unscientific? Go fuck yourself
>>

The data we have suggests that there is more mass out there than we observe based off of our understanding of gravity. You can draw one of two things from this: either our current understanding of gravity (which works in literally every other situation) is flawed, or there is mass out there that isn't emitting radiation.

look im bad at math and i need help trying to figure out something in a bad Pay to win game

well so i can get 2000 fp items for 1.50$ or i can get 20 5000 fp items for 100$ with 2000 gold left over and 60 Gold to feed each which is cheaper im bad at math and have no idea how to do this kind of problem

Also if your wondering the game is Realm of The Mad God or ROTMG for short its a bad flash game
