Could it be possible to manipulate light or without direct contact with the light source?

For example, with some future technology, could the light of a candle be captured and manipulated, made brighter for example, without changing the nature of the candle?

Switching the wax for sulfur would yield brighter light and a faster burn, but I mean manipulating the light itself once it has emitted from the flame. Making it expend its own energy faster, turning a glow into a flash and then darkness, something like that. I'm not sure what light even is, and I don't think I'm alone in that.

There already exist materials to trap light. I imagine something more sophisticated could be made where you store the light output of a candle over time and release it all at once creating a flash.

I am an epistolary lightning lithograph correspondent like any other, and I am most certainly of the present age.

If you are indeed also of the present age, perhaps you could prove this by posting maritime charts to new lands rich in gold and spices.

can a black hole move through space near light speed like a supercomet and accelerate faster and faster due to absorbing kinetic energy from orbital slingshots from galaxies and then hit earth and destroy us all?

Procrastinators of /sci/:

How do I effectively work for 10 hours straight?
Any advice?

You don't. Nootropics help push natural boundaries, but I wouldn't push such a lengthy spurt like 10 hours in one day. That's just dumb.

How sheltered are u that u've never had to work 10 hours straight? Like it's not something you want to do routinely, but it's far from impossible.

Don't do it. 60% of the sun's rays will still fuck you up

I stared at the sun for a minute or so on a cloudy day a few years ago, thinking it was the moon- lucky enough to escape with a temporary burning sensation in my eyes.

However, I was (and still am :) young and extremely lucky. I will not risk my eyes like that again. If I had been out of my prime, I might have irreparably damaged my vision.

11 is not dark enough. Don't risk it. Prepare for the one in 2024

I think it's possible to reach higher shades by stacking filters though, look into that (on reputable sites, not 4chan of all places)

Do experimental cancer treatments ever work? I heep hearing stories about people who say the NHS "gave up on them" so they sold their house to fund treatment in America. 6 months later there is always a silent announcement that they died. These clinics sound like scams to me.

I think the public needs to be educated that once cancer spreads it's over and sometimes no treatment gives less suffering than treatment. My advice to you if you ever get cancer (God forbid) and the doctors say it's hopeless is to find a nice hospice that's stocked up on good pain meds.

This is a really sad story
http://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/article-4805490/Teenager-battling-cancer-makes-emotional-plea-200k.
A quick google of the German clinic he is desperate to go to reveals that it's a total scam

I've heard of one experimental treatment success story where they trained a person's immune system to attack cancer cells. The reaction was immediate and so severe that they almost died of fever as their body dissolved and ate the tumor protruding from their skull. Within 48 hours the protrusion had shrank, and the tumor was gone.

Hey guys so if I watch the eclipse through my car windows which has the darkest tint available in California while also wearing a welding mask or multiple sunglasses will I die?

Asking for a friend :)
24 posts and 5 images submitted.
>>
Your car tint will do nothing, neither will your glasses, even if you had 50. "Only goggles made for electric arc welding can be used to observe the sun, and they must have a shade scale number of 12 or higher. Shade 13 is ideal for solar viewing"

Just buy the glasses fool, they're under 10$
>>
>>9117229
uh where are you supposed to buy them? They have been sold out of them everywhere for the past week.

I don't know why the fuck more weren't produced. They're made of fucking cardboard and have mylar+black polymer filters that you look through. Cheap as hell to manufacture
>>
Poke a hole in a shoebox, piece of cardboard, stiff piece of paper, or otherwise and cast the shadow of the eclipse on the ground. You won't miss a thing.

Since the brain is made of fat wouldn't eating more fat made you smarter?
24 posts and 2 images submitted.

Your brain isnt just the sum of its components. Its a dynamic system and eating more fat wont make it more dynamic or efficient. You would have to eat something that would increase the number of neurons or the rate they diffuse ion channels.

>>9116229
Close, eat fatty fish, the fish oils are good for the brain

>caking agent used to hold shitty ice pack NH4NO3 together causes insane foaming in reaction flask
>decrease hot plate temperature
>suckback from loss of pressure pulls water from scrubber into flask with molten ammonium nitrate
>foam spills into rubber hose leading to scrubber flask
>forget that foam is liquid ammonium nitrate
>pressure blows stopper off the reaction flask
>liquid NH4NO3 sprays all over the garage
>sweet smelling smoke fills room
>ohshit.jpg
>try to throw paper towels with cold water onto hot plate
>catches fire
>throw them on concrete garage floor and let them burn out
>smoke filling entire front part of house
>step outside to catch breath
>clean up as if nothing happened 30 minutes later
>explain to dad that the small white stalagtites on ceiling are from splashed saturated solution of NH4Cl weeks later

I've done some pretty interesting work on the collatz conjecture, and i think i might even be able to solve it, and im just wondering where i should submit it, as i dont have a Ph.D in maths.

The work is somewhat interdisciplinary (lots of computational logic and even some stuff that'd probably fall within the comp ling area), so i dont know which regular maths journals would accept or even understand the work, it is somewhat lengthy as well (no IUT but it'd still take sometime).
