Anyone have tips for getting candids?

Going to a beach resort in a month and want to get some good ones.

I'm hoping my balcony has a good view for getting some with mybulky DSLR, but is there a good way to get some undetected with a cellphone camera at the beach/pool?

I can share my experiences, in case you find them useful.

What I usually do is to walk around with the phone on my hand, arm hanging, with an app that takes pics automatically all the time with the screen turned off (MHC). You just take a look at it from time to time, and people just think you're waiting for a call or something. If you sit somewhere, it's even easier.

Actually, I've had much more success just using a camera. Even better with your DSLR. When I use my bulky camera, everyone assumes I'm taking pics of any features around, or the landscape. Just do it with confidence, and nobody will notice anything. You can use the zoom to make it easier, too.
This method works fine with my compact, too, but it raises more eyebrows and with less zoom things are a bit harder. When I had that camera only, I usually used some help from my GF. I have her pretend to pose for a pic, while I point at people behind her, using the little zoom possible. If you can get someone to help, it's by far the easiest way.
