I think a lot of why Europeans are able to have social programs that they meet so much resistance in the US is that European states are relatively homogenous.

The primary definition of nation is not state, but a cohesive group of people who want to be self governing. The diaspora would be a stateless nation, while America is a nationless state. That's what nationalism is about, and it seems fine to me. It's one thing if you decide to go fuck other nations' shit up. But if you simply declare, these are our borders, and our responsibility is to the people inside, not outside, that seems reasonable.
